Can I lance an infected cyst at home?

I have a very infected cyst under my armpit, on day 3 of antibiotics and I'm in so much pain, I've tried hot flannels pressed on it and pain killers are doing nothing. GP won't touch it because it's infected and she couldn't be 100% sure it's not a lymph node, i discovered it many years ago when it was dried pea sized and the GP then said it was a cyst and she was happy to leave it there as there was no risk of it becoming sinister.

So. If I drink a large shot of whiskey can I safely stick a needle or something in it to try and relieve the pain? I think I know the answer will be no but it's soooooo sore! 😫

I would call the ooh service. Even if feeling pukey is normal for you with antibiotics. The increase in pain would be enough for me after a few days on the meds I would expect it to start diminishing.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/07/2017 23:42

I'd seek help if you're feeling poorly.

Refilona · 29/07/2017 23:51

Yes, get help and don't try and do it yourself please! It doesn't look ready. I had a boil down there and it was awful. I used hot compresses and in a couple of days it had a white head and I could burst it.

Teezyweezy · 29/07/2017 23:58

I had exactly the same op. Six weeks ago, mine was on my hip. Had the same antibiotics which were a waste of time. I went to A&E finally I was in so much pain. I was admitted and taken to theatre. They drained it off under anesthetic. I was left with a 7cm cavity, which, has been packed at the GP surgery every day for the last six weeks, it is almost healed now. I would not wait any longer if I were you, it needs to be lanced ASAP.

Argh! I can't find my thermometer so no idea of temp, I'm fine if I stay still but as soon as I move I get the shivers, I'm not sure if that's from the pain though, my body is awful with a lot of pain, I can mentally take it but I go into shock easily, it's embarrassing!
Our OOH GP closes at 11.30pm after that it's 111 and they can only say call back for OOH in the morning or go to a&e so I'm going to try and stick it out until the morning. Saturday night a&e isn't a fun place to be.
I've taken the maximum dose of ibuprofen o can in 24hrs so I'm just going to try and find somewhere comfortable with an audio book and wait for daylight, luckily I don't have work tomorrow.

I don't like the sound of the shivers. My DH had shivers (aka rigours) when he had sepsis. The OOH sent an ambulance and he was in hospital on iV antibiotics for almost a week. His temp in ambulance was 40 and that was half an hour after paracetamol.

I hope you're not alone, you need to be monitored.

MadgeMidgerson · 30/07/2017 02:21

GO GET SEEN BY SOMEONE NOW

you could end up with blood poisoning. This isn't time wastery and you will not destroy the NHS in seeking treatment. Really.

honeysucklejasmine · 30/07/2017 02:39

Oh dear OP, I really think you should seek help with this, now.

beargryllshasabigrope · 30/07/2017 02:55

The pain and shivers don't sound good, you really should be seen by someone asap. Do you have someone with you?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 30/07/2017 03:44

Tits I agree. You don't want to end up septic.

MimsyBorogroves · 30/07/2017 03:54

Go in if you can. I'm all for bursting, but this sounds serious.

Fruitboxjury · 30/07/2017 03:59

If I were you I would be off to a&e with a good book good luck

ThomasRichard · 30/07/2017 04:12

Go to A&E OP. You really don't want septicaemia.

flumpybear · 30/07/2017 04:22

Ouch! Try OOH first thing

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/07/2017 04:37

I'm hoping you've seen someone. The shivers aren't great. Last time I got the 'can't move without shivers' I had a really bad fever. Hospital bad. Especially if you've already taken painkillers.

Look after yourself.

yep go now. you sound really unwell.

at least the drunks provide some entertainment whilst witing

TitsalinaBumSquash · 30/07/2017 06:04

Good morning everyone, I fell asleep shortly after posting, i Lind a semi comfortable position on my knees, I've just woken up, I feel a bit better in myself, no more shivers but now it's daylight I will be calling 111 to see if I can go and see the OOH GP.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 30/07/2017 06:38

The OOH will contact me within 2 hrs to advise me or give me an appointment.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 30/07/2017 08:19

Good. Relief. Hope OOH are of some help!

CremeFresh · 30/07/2017 08:46

Glad you got some sleep , hope it clears up soon xx

Ollivander84 · 30/07/2017 09:24

I had one v v similar and they wouldn't touch it under a local. Had a GA as local won't numb infected tissue

TitsalinaBumSquash · 30/07/2017 10:44

I'm on the emergency floor waiting for a surgical review. I've been poked and prodded by a few doctors.
