Hello everyone!

We're delighted to welcome Louise McMahon, Siobhan Sammon and Megan Cheyne, Academy Recruitment Managers at St. James's Place (SJP), who'll be here answering your questions about careers in financial advice.

Whether you're considering a career change, thinking about returning to work after having children or wanting to build your skillset in a new industry, this is your opportunity to ask your questions.

56% of wealth transferred by 2048 is projected to be inherited by women, but they remain underrepresented in the financial industry; only 18% of regulated financial advisers are female*. St. James's Place is passionate about encouraging more women into financial advice and is helping to break down some of the misconceptions about starting a finance career.

Many people assume that working in finance means you need years of experience, a degree in economics or to be brilliant at maths, but that's often not the case.

Whether you’re ready for a new challenge or returning to work, the Academy offers a clear path into advice. It’s designed to help you build a career with purpose, flexibility, and the chance to make a real difference.

Through the St. James's Place Financial Adviser Academy, women can retrain, return to work or build a completely new career with a fully funded training programme leading to a Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning.

The Academy is designed to be flexible and provides support throughout the journey, from studying for qualifications through to becoming a practising financial adviser.

The experts are here to answer your questions about:

  • What it's really like to be a financial adviser
  • The skills needed to succeed
  • Flexible working and balancing family life
  • The St. James's Place Financial Adviser Academy
  • Career progression, earning potential and day-to-day life in the role

Perhaps you've wondered...

  • Is financial advice a good career for parents?
  • What does a typical day look like?
  • What kind of person makes a good financial adviser?
  • What support would I receive during training?
  • What's the earning potential?
  • Am I too old to retrain?

Whatever you're curious about, no question is too big or too small.

Aboout the team

Louise McMahon: Louise is an Academy Recruitment Manager at St James's Place, helping people from a variety of backgrounds transition into rewarding careers in financial advice. A mum of two boys, now 18 and 16, she remembers how challenging the early years of motherhood could be when trying to focus on her own career. Louise is passionate about meeting women considering a career change or return to work and exploring what financial advice could offer.

Megan Cheyne: Megan is an Academy Recruitment Manager at St. James's Place, helping people explore careers in financial advice. After 12 years in the automotive industry, she made a big career pivot herself and understands first-hand how daunting a career change can feel. As a busy mum of three, Megan is passionate about helping women build rewarding, flexible careers that fit around family life.

Siobhan Sammon: Siobhan is an Academy Recruitment Manager at St James's Place. A mum of 2, she understands the challenges of balancing motherhood, work, family life & ambitions. She is passionate about helping more women, particularly mums, discover opportunities within financial services. Her mission is to show women that becoming a mum doesn't mean putting your ambitions on hold; you can still build a successful career and
show your family that it's important to pursue your dreams.

The team will be answering questions from 21st Septemeber until 28th September, so post your questions below and they'll answer as many as they can.

We're looking forward to hearing from you!

Do you need to have professional insurance to protect you in case something goes badly after your advice,?

hannahp1209 · 16/09/2026 22:34

Do you need extensive knowledge to start?

djddmdm · 17/09/2026 07:10

What's the route to being qualified, how long does it take?

aggga8 · 17/09/2026 07:19

I’m 46 and considering a career change with no finance experience. Is there an age limit, and can you earn while training?

caffeineanddryshampoo · 17/09/2026 09:34

How do you match the flexibility needed for a parent with the requirements of the job/training?

Cat0808 · 17/09/2026 09:46

Hi,
If you already work in finance admin, are those skills transferable? What is the expected salary progression?

JacCharlton · 17/09/2026 18:04

Can the hours be flexible or annualised - how many inset days would you need to keep up to speed with the ever changing product range to reflect the changing markets.

Runningshorts · 19/09/2026 20:32

Oh wow, I'd love a career change into finance, I regret not making a move when I thought about it pre-children. Is it difficult to get into? I can't afford to quit my job to retrain so feel like it's no longer an option for me?

moonbeam3 · 21/09/2026 11:34

What skills and training would you need to be a financial adviser

StickChildNumberTwo · 21/09/2026 15:51

My image of the world of finance is shiny skyscrapers in London. How many jobs are there in the rest of the country where most of us live?

Bjorkdidit · 21/09/2026 16:34

The people in shiny skyscapers in London aren't generally meeting members of the public to advise them on ISAs and pensions. That happens all over the country in people's homes and local offices and online too so these days in theory you could work anywhere. I have a friend who is a financial planner for a small firm and works very successfully in the north of England.

DoggerelBank · 22/09/2026 00:28

Any point in applying if you're in your late 50s and looking for a career change?

SecretsAndLies77 · 23/09/2026 18:05

I've a PhD in a Humanities subject and work in academia, but my background was in corporate business analysis (a long time ago). Is it possible to retrain while working full time? How is the programme funded - is there really no cost to the trainee? Thank you in advance.

Laire1 · 23/09/2026 20:51

I already hold a level 4 diploma in Financial Planning but haven’t “practised” for sometime but still have my designation as I’ve been in FP Operations and Technology, could this role be done part time?

MontyJinks · 24/09/2026 09:58

What is the annual minimum/maximum earning potential please? Would this be feasible for someone looking to retrain for a secondary career and lifestyle change? Thank you.

applesandoranges11 · 24/09/2026 10:27

I'm interested in the answers to lots of these questions. I thought they would be answered from Sept 21st? @geemumsnet ??

TealPombear · 24/09/2026 14:57

I would LOVE to do something like this?

I worry about the transition from my current role to training and paying for life!!!

How do I balance it all?? Is there a guide on getting started?

chickenpotnoodle · 24/09/2026 18:34

Do you work around customers needs - weekends / evenings - which would fit in with childcare for me as I work PT would like to work the hours I choose, and not spend as much on childcare if I could work around customers appointments (after training of course)

Well, this is either a good sign because the people concerned have been given the flexibility to be off balancing their work and their family life.

Or it’s a bad sign because some of these questions are quite tricky and they have decided to cancel the Q&A for PR reasons!

dazzlingdeborahrose · 26/09/2026 15:48

Well, it says up to 28th so they may be waiting to answer in one session.

MayCottage · 29/09/2026 11:59

@geemumsnet looking for the answers to this one - a thread I was particularly interested in TY

I’ve signed up to the emails for this, off the back of a Facebook advert. I think it was that. I’ve had some info through about transferable skills etc, but not sure what to do next. Can you outline the exact steps, cost and timeframe please? Thanks.

Edit to add, I’m aware I’ve posted this too early, but I’m hoping the post can sit here until 21st when you look at them.

What would be a good path into being a financial advisor for a parent who has taken 10+ years out of employment to care for children?

Thank you for your interest. A career break to care for children doesn’t prevent you from becoming a financial adviser, and the Financial Adviser Academy is designed to support people making a career change, including those returning to work after time away.
