Surely colic is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
With my child "colic" turned out to be undiagnosed cows milk protein allergy and silent reflux. Once I cut out all dairy (breastfeeding) and she got medication for the reflux we had a different baby.

changer2010 · 05/04/2024 16:49

My question is how often should I wind baby during a feed?

This.

I’m really sceptical that any midwife is engaging with a topic titled ‘colic’. I’ve been a midwife for about 20 yrs. Not that it matters.

Colic is a word used to describe an unsettled, crying baby with no clinical cause.

Colic is not a clinical condition - it’s simply how some babies behave. I know you can set your watch by some of them - but it’s not a clinical diagnosis. So there is no ‘cure’.

if your baby’s colic went away when you changed your diet/their formula - then it wasn’t colic.

@Waitingfordoggo i think you are absolutely correct in your assertion of ‘colic’.

Thanks @AgathaMystery- good to know a MW agrees with my understanding of what colic is!

I’ll be interested to see what the MAM expert says about colic.

Waitingfordoggo · 05/04/2024 22:08

@Raveceleste I don’t think I have any advice because it’s such a long time since my babies were, well, babies! But I didn’t want to leave you unanswered because you sound exhausted and I do remember what a struggle it is. Everything becomes magnified when you are sleep deprived.

I would say that while it’s unfortunate the baby’s Dad is struggling, he should not be snapping at anyone because none of this is your fault or the baby’s fault. My DH didn’t like being woken in the night either (nor did I!) but he supported me by making me a cup of tea and cuddling DD when I’d finished feeding her.

Have you tried putting her in a sling during the day? When I had my DD, slings were only just beginning to gain popularity but I sort of missed the boat. Since then I have known quite a few Mums who found that wearing baby in a sling during the day allowed them to get some things done and baby was settled because they were close to Mum.

I hope you’re ok and can find ways to cope by catching up on sleep as and when you can.

Can feeding a baby when he/she isn't ready, or leaving a feed later that due lead to the babu taking milk when over hungry or not ready for a feed lead to indigestion or colic

Sunflower1111 · 10/04/2024 17:00

Hello Ladies,

Did any of you book their Elective C Section privately at one of the following hospitals and can recommend one please?

I have to book mine and have absolutely no clue and nobody to ask to:

  • Portland Hospital
  • Fitzrovia Wing at UCLH
  • Queens Charlotte (Clayton Wing)
  • Queen’s Mary Lindo Wing

Thank you so very much! 🙏🏻

Hello , just wanted to share and ask for something which has been making me feel very worried most of the time. So I'm 22 and me and my boyfriend are together from a year and couple of months,we are not trying for a baby but we do nothing to prevent it , and I'm anxious because this started affecting me thinking is it something wrong with me ? I've never been on any kind of contraceptives and never had pregnancy scare . Has anyone else had been in the same situation?🙁

Waitingfordoggo · 11/04/2024 18:55

@Sunflower1111 and @Tamaralani this thread is about colic.

Go back to the main MN talk page and from there you can choose from a list of topic areas. Once you have chosen one that fits, repost your queries there and you’ll hopefully get some replies .

Is there any research that a 'colicy' baby goes on to have IBS or IBD later on - or is it just something some babies get and grow out of ?

littlecottonbud · 14/04/2024 17:20

I have been recommended infacol - but how long should I be using this for, will it hinder the development of the bowels to be able to tolerate breast milk and formula

pushchairprincess · 17/04/2024 14:45

How long does colic go on for before I get worried - if it's several hours a day should I go to the doctor or try the massage and infacol route ?

Mucus is a sign of a non-ige allergy (e.g. dairy, egg, soya).

DinkyDaffodil · 18/04/2024 09:30

If colic is due to a milk allergy what are my feeding options - which milk is best if my breast milk causes an intollerance ?

You can go dairy free yourself and still breastfeed; check every single thing you buy though as they put milk in a lot of things you wouldn't expect (also noted as whey, casein, cream etc on the ingredients; or "lac" for toiletries - especially hand wash). I did this for a year and it's doable (although I really missed cheese! the vegan stuff is just not great)

Otherwise if you want to mix feed or formula feed you need to go to your GP and they would prescribe firstly an extensively hydrolysed formula, and if that doesn't help an amino-acid based formula. There's a CMPA main group & breastfeeding support group on Facebook that's very helpful.

Smellz714 · 19/04/2024 03:05

Experiencing it now with four week old - could an over-supply/fast let down be to blame for the excess gas? DC1 was worse and treated for reflux, would scream on the boob, only take small feeds often choking on the milk 15-20mins later. DC2 is taking full feeds but is so gassy and uncomfortable after, reluctant to assume over-supply in case I affect supply and end up with a hungry baby.

Should I breastfeed after eating nuts- I have heard this can induce a bout of colic ? or is this a myth

chickenpotnoodle · 20/04/2024 15:39

Is there any research into what you do/eat/exercise during pregnancy which may have an effect on colic in babies ?

Beabeautiful · 21/04/2024 09:53

What can I do to alleviate and try to prevent the symptoms of colic ?
