Dr. Pixie McKenna is here to answer any questions you may have on children's health, specifically cold and flu, fever, teething and earache. As a mum of one to daughter Darcey, Pixie is more than a medical expert – she's a parent who's had first-hand experience looking after her own child and is here to share her top tips and advice.

Here’s a little bit more about Dr. Pixie:

Dr. Pixie has strong family background of medicine (she is the third generation of doctors in her family!) and has a lifetime of knowledge with over 13 years medical experience since qualifying. She's currently a practising GP at London’s Harley Street.

Post your questions to Dr. Pixie by the 1 February 2016 and we will pick 20 for her to respond to. Everyone who posts a question will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Mumsnetter will win a £150 Love2Shop voucher. A link to her responses will be posted by 29th February 2016.

Please note, Dr. Pixie is here to give advice but cannot mention, discuss or endorse any brands or products.

This Q&A is sponsored by Nurofen for Children.

Thanks,

MNHQ.

My daughter (9) suffers with terrible nose bleeds, she has had quaterisation a year ago but they have not stopped, do we need to go back and do it again or just ride it out and hope they will stop with age? On a separate note if she stands still without moving her feet etc she also passes out, is this normal?

Hi Dr Pixie

My 9 year son has had a constantly runny nose for the last few months, he doesn't have a cold, should I be worried or will it just go by itself?

My son had severe chicken pox when he was a baby (9 months old), every time he gets overtired and unwell he comes out in tiny white dots on his skin which the doctor had told me in the past was associated with his chicken pox, any ways of helping him. He has a good diet of freshly cooked food, and takes vitamin supplements in the winter which seems to have helped, but the white dots (mainly on his joints elbow and knees) keep coming back.

How do you feel about treating 'looked after children' ? Do you treat them any differently ? I have looked after many children as a foster carer and despite detailed agreements and health plans have often met with all kinds of obstacles and challenges regarding health care - when a parent disagrees with a foster carer or social services it can be so difficult but when the doctor is in the middle of all this it must be really difficult for you to deal with too! Some doctors I have found very different in attitude to seeing a child in care as opposed to a child not in care! albeit subconsciously or not ...

Hi. My son has suffered from bumps on his arm since a very early age. They mostly don't bother him apart from when one becomes infected occasionally. He is now nearly 12 and has become very self conscious about them (they are quite prominent)

We have tried gentle exfoliation, gentle moisterisers etc but nothing seems to help. We visited our Dr a few years ago but were sent away without any advice. Any ideas of what this may be and how to ease it?
Thanks

Hi Dr Pixie,

My 6 year old daughter has a food allergy to Legumes (baked beans is the worst one). If she comes into contact with them the area swells up and gets a raised red itchy rash. She has never eaten them so we don't know what the reaction would be if she actually ate one. They serve beans every day at school and almost every restaurant serves them so she does occasionally come into contact with them by touching other children who have eaten them. It causes her anxiety because when she's not eating at home she always has a worry that someone might have beans near her.
My question is.....Is it possible that she might grow out of this food allergy or is she likely to have it for life?

My husband has issues with his feet/knees that mean he needs orthotic inserts in his shoes. At what age should we be having our kids checked to see whether they've inherited his issues? - I imagine it's the sort of thing that's best caught early.
