A bit of research about the prices in the Warner Bros shop compared to the shop at platform 9 3/4 in London Kings Cross - where the prices are even higher!!!!!

A map which costs £29.99 at Warner bros costs £40 in London Kings Cross station shop

Cagliostro we showed the email and got on free.

I so glad that those chosen had a great time. I couldn't have gone so didn't enter. I went two years ago with DS and am going back with DH in May for my birthday...love Harry Potter...books and films.

Cagliostro · 25/03/2016 08:54

Thanks for the replies. That's very strange. The driver we had was absolutely resolute that MN had made a mistake!

LunaLunaLovegood · 25/03/2016 11:20

Just popping on to say THANK YOU we had an incredible time and will review later today Grin

What were your first impressions on arrival?

I have been before so I knew what to expect, my kids however all went "Woooow!" When they saw the chess pieces and the big posters, the lobby inside was the same, loads of excited pointing to all the things they could see and recognise.
The handprints from the 3 main actors were a hit and DS1 is delighted to find that he has the same size hands as Daniel Radcliffe!
The staff were happy to show us where to go and what to do and they gave the kids all a passport to take round which was a bit hit.

How were the facilities throughout the Studio Tour?

Excellent, plenty of toilets and baby changes in both male and female toilets, the staff allowed us to use the medical room too with no issues and they allowed us in the side entrance because DS was hooked up to a portable iv drip.
There are plenty of places to sit and a lot of manoeuvring room for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
The food and drink selection has expanded since I was last there which is nice to see and the quality of the food was good.
I love that you can wash the butterbeer tankards to take home.

Were the staff friendly and helpful?

Amazingly so, they were all very knowledgable and happy to chat to us about everything going on and the things on display, they were full of little facts and extras which delighted the children and me alike.
They were all friendly and went above the call of duty to make us feel welcome and cared for.

Did you and your family enjoy the experience?

Very much so, DS has already asked to go back for his birthday and even 3 year olds ds3 is still taking about the wonderful time he had looking at all the things, I really think there is something for everyone there wether it's a little one looking for the snitches and stamps or die hard fans like me who enjoy taking in all the details of everything and chatting to the staff. Our favourite bit collectively was the Hogwarts express and the platform.

Would you recommend other families visit the Studio Tour for a day out?

Absolutely, I think it's a must for everyone wether family group or couples or even alone. It is informative and fun and you can get lost in the world of Harry Potter for a good few hours.

A huge thanks to Mumsnet for the evening, it's right up there as our favourite family event we've attended and we will be returning a few times I imagine.

What were your first impressions on arrival?
Staff were very welcoming and helpful, parking was well laid out.

How were the facilities throughout the Studio Tour?
The facilities were clean, food was reasonably priced and outside area came at the right time, although a map may have been helpful.

Were the staff friendly and helpful?
All of the staff were very nice and also obviously very passionate and engaged with the kids.

Did you and your family enjoy the experience?
I cannot fault the tour and it appealed to a wide range of ages 4-40, We all loved it! I think it does represent value for money, however the prices in the shop and for the green screen photos were slightly shocking but I suppose that is to be expected!

Would you recommend other families visit the Studio Tour for a day out?
Yes! With the added bonus, it is the tour that keeps on giving as it has renewed our enthusiasm for Harry Potter and we are planning to watch all the films again over the Easter break.

Thank you Mumsnet for a wonderful family experience.

SuffolkNWhat · 25/03/2016 11:57

I'll preface this by saying I'm a huge HP fan and teacher. I'm taking my class in July to the Studio Tour.

What were your first impressions on arrival?

The car park was very well staffed and we loved the touch of having special cones. We went for our second visit at Christmas and the tree was a superb spectacle.

How were the facilities throughout the Studio Tour?
Excellent, clearly sign posted and although busy it never felt overcrowded. This is a big part of why I feel confident bringing 24 10 year olds to the tour.

Were the staff friendly and helpful?
On our first tour we had the digital guides and mine stopped working. It was immediately replaced by the very helpful staff.

On our second visit it was my birthday, I got to open the doors (totally amazing) and each staff member said Happy Birthday. The lady working at the costume part even showed me a couple of Luna's costumes in detail.

Did you and your family enjoy the experience?
We loved it, like I said before I'm a huge HP fan (my classroom is fully decorated in a HP theme) and it felt like coming home. Seeing the Hogwarts Express was truly wonderful and I'm still waiting for my letter 23 years and counting

Would you recommend other families visit the Studio Tour for a day out?

Absolutely and also other teachers do check out the packages they provide, we can't wait for our trip in the summer and I was surprised at how affordable the whole package is and the Education team are really happy to help you tailor your trip to your class' needs.

ThisToo · 25/03/2016 13:47

What were your first impressions on arrival?
The car park staff were friendly and it was very well organised. We were directed to a space very close to the entrance. The chess pieces outside are amazing. The security check on the way in was quick and efficient and the staff were all friendly although one of them made the mistake of calling my Slytherin clad son “Harry” which we had laugh about. The registration desk was equally efficient and the staff friendly. It was a nice touch to have props such as large leather bound ledgers from Gringotts on the desk which wowed my son before we even started the tour.
The entrance lobby is quite plain with just some large pictures of the main characters but it is spacious and airy and the queuing was relatively quick. We did not wait long to go in and start the tour experience. Overall first impressions were very good.

How were the facilities throughout the studio tour?
We found the loos were clean and there was no queuing to use them, although I can imagine some queuing might occur during busier times. The Backlot Café was clean and welcoming and again, I could not fault the friendly, helpful staff. The food was okay, not the best but have certainly had much worse (Legoland, I’m looking at you). The Butterbeer was great. I expected the taster to be just that, a taster, not a whole glass each plus a souvenir tankard to take home.

Were the staff friendly and helpful?
The customer service is second to none. From start to finish the staff were all brilliant. The Interactors were very approachable, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We were shown a little pot with Harry Potter’s actual scars in it which my 9 year old loved plus learnt how the curly haired wigs are made of yak’s hair as it holds the curl better than human hair and many other little facts along the way. It’s definitely worth chatting to the Interactors who are all big HP fans and happy to share their knowledge. A member of staff in the shop also spent ages explaining all the different soft toys and which ones are puppets or have sound effects included etc. to my indecisive son to make sure he was happy with his final choice - a Hedwig puppet Grin

Did you and your family enjoy the experience?
Absolutely! From start to finish we loved all of it.

Would you recommend other families to visit the studio tours for a day out?
I would say the studio tour is a must for any Harry Potter fan. There is so much to see and be wowed by. The attention to detail is amazing. I think it would also be ideal for anyone interested in movie making or special and visual effects in general as there is a lot of information on how they brought the books to life on the big screen. The only downside is that the shop is very, very expensive. We will definitely be going back!

Thank you Mumsnet and Warner Bros Studio Tour for a wonderful experience!

forkhandles4candles · 25/03/2016 14:43

Non tester: we went a year ago. It was a bit of a pain getting there without a car, but we managed. I can't bear the whole HP thing, but DC love it. The tour was better than I thought it would be because, rather than a theme park, it is more an exploration of film making, props, sets, make up and so in. Or at least the bits that I concentrated on were, so, it was good as a special treat. Gift shop was expensive of course. I like butterbeer, so that was nice, and much fun is had with those ridiculous jelly beans.

What were your first impressions on arrival?
It looked & was very organised. The parking attendants & staff in reception were very helpful. The chess pieces outside were great. First impressions were great & the children were excited.

How were the facilities throughout the Studio Tour?
The queue was about 20 mins, which was a bit testing for 4&6 year old - I wondered if it would be possible to have something interactive during this time or a 'can you find the 20 hidden snitches in the queue area' as I am sure at times it is longer/busier. The width of the queue was quite narrow for our buggy & the buggy wheels kept hitting the round bases of the rope holders - not a problem but an observation.
Were the staff friendly and helpful?
Yes - as this is an honest review, we did observe a member of staff ask another if she would be able to go home at 6pm & give a negative response when the answer was no. This snaps you back to a reality, but overall the quality & quantity of staff was excellent. The lady serving in the cafe was very helpful, especially when my youngest was having a meltdown about wanting something other than the food choices, she let us swap for a sandwich that he had fixated on! So thank you to her!

Did you and your family enjoy the experience?
We loved it, we got some beautiful shots of the boys completely captivated by the whole event. My husband is a huge fan & wants to go back already, he even tolerated the car picture which I did not think he would! The children were hooked from the cinema to the end & were sad when we got to the end. Which after 3 hours of concentration, was impressive. The train was amazing to see & we loved the model of Hogwarts at the end.

Would you recommend other families visit the Studio Tour for a day out?
We would recommend it, I think allowing the tour to end & then allowing space before entering the gift shop would be more family friendly. The majority would go to the shop, but a choice would be nice & help parents out!
A great day out, thank you for allowing us to experience it!

ThisToo · 25/03/2016 20:08

Sootica Thank you, that is so nice to hear although I'm concerned if Hogwarts find out about his loveliness he might get chucked out of Slytherin Shock. I will be sure to check out the other thread too. Bless him, he took his wand practise very seriously but was super chuffed his efforts were rewarded with a 15th anniversary badge. Hedwig is fab isn't she? I got Scabbers complete with his missing toe and patchy fur, I love the attention to detail Grin

FranksBobot · 25/03/2016 20:31

ThisToo just a reminder...
Harry: Albus Severus Potter. You were named after two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin and he was the bravest man I’ve ever known.

Not all Slytherins are bad. Your charming son is definitely one of the good eggs Grin

LunaLunaLovegood · 25/03/2016 20:47

OK here is my feedback, and thanks again to MN and WB.

What were your first impressions on arrival?

The whole area looked really smart and clean. The car park attendants were really friendly and helpful and the studios looked, well, just like something you see on the movies! Loved the big sign and the pictures, as well as the chess pieces. We started to queue up to collect tickets from a window when a member of staff heard me saying ‘email from Mumsnet’ and explained we could go straight inside.

The security staff were very friendly. DD is always scared of security checks so it was great that we went through so quickly and painlessly.

Once indoors I LOVED the ledger on the information desk. I think it is right that you don’t go into anything olde worlde, it feels like a proper film studio rather than a theme park trying to recreate Hogwarts. But the ledger was a great little nod to what lies ahead.

The queue moved steadily although DS announced he was suddenly really thirsty part way through – no one seemed to mind that DH ducked out to get a bottle of water and ducked back in again which was a relief.

How were the facilities throughout the Studio Tour?

The toilets were mostly clean – you could tell they are cleaned often, but there were a couple of unflushed loos and paper on the floor – sadly this is just down to the users so not much anyone can do I guess. I liked the auto sensor flushes and hand dryers that actually work. (Saddo that I am, I also liked the out of order sign on one that was broken as it was in Warner Bros. house style and laminated. Not some tatty scribbled thing.)

The café was very well organised. DH went to the Butterbeer only point whilst I went to get the food and drink. Everything was really tasty. It was great to be able to rinse the souvenir mugs, shame there was no easy way of drying them off. A member of staff was mopping the floor but it seemed like a never ending task. I used napkins to dry them and DH went and bought a plastic bag (he said the sales guy was very apologetic that he had to charge 5p!) so we could carry them on the rest of the tour. A nice addition would be a bag vending machine in that area. By the way I love the fact that although they are ‘just’ plastic mugs they are fairly sturdy and can go in the dishwasher.

Were the staff friendly and helpful?

Yes – all of them. Full of enthusiasm and facts and seemed to care about whether we were enjoying ourselves. I was really really impressed with all the staff.

Did you and your family enjoy the experience?

COMPLETELY! We had an amazing time. The exhibits are just incredible. The cinema screen, the screen disappearing, the OMG we are really HERE moment… So utterly well done. It is flawlessly executed.

I liked being guided round the Great Hall and then the guide explained about moving on but how and when to come back in if you wanted to. All the information explaining each item was really clear, interesting, well laid out and easy to see. It never felt crowded and it was nice kind of moving round with other families. Maybe it was the Mumsnet effect but all the kids there were really NICE and well mannered and there was no one hogging anything.

We have seen all the films so weren’t worried about spoilers, but I did notice that nothing really gave the game away about too much of the plot – you wouldn’t know who dies, you would see the Triwizard Cup but it doesn’t explain who wins it. The staff all know the films inside out and will chat away about them and what is different in each one. Like the size shifting courtyard!

We had fun doing the flying car photo and I was impressed that you get a digital copy as well as a print. The folder is really nice that it is presented in and the staff were very helpful explaining how to get the download.

The Hogwarts Express was such a treat. Loads of wonderful details everywhere you look. I knew it was part of the tour but didn’t realise you could walk down the corridor looking in at all the compartments.

I have a bit of a thing about graphic design and really enjoyed the section with the Quibbler, Daily Prophet, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes and so on and could have spent hours at that part. There was a really informative member of staff (who also kindly gave us some special badges, thank you!) who told me lots of interesting facts and pointed out some fascinating features.

After we ate, it was dark by the time we got to the outside area and DS kind of swirled out into the fresh air and declared ‘THIS IS AWESOME’ and he is right. Everything is so well ordered that you think you have said all the ‘wow’s you can and then you see the Knight bus and run down the bridge and knock on the Dursley’s front door – a perfect chance to let off a bit of steam really!

The next sections looking at the animatronics, special effects and art work were incredible. Realising how much work goes into making a film was a massive eye opener for the children and it was valuable for them to see how grown ups actually have proper jobs making models, and drawing and so on.

Mooching down Diagon Alley was so much fun. There were tiny details EVERYWHERE and I’m sure we could have spent all day there.

By the time we got to the Hogwarts castle DH and I both welled up… it’s just spectacular! I had not realised how HUGE it would be. I loved the music playing, the way the whole thing is set out so you can read more facts, walk round the levels, zoom in, and being able to take as many photographs as you like is a wonderful thing because we’ve already been looking at ours and spotting extra things.

The wand room really made me choke up and then JK Rowling’s quote on the exit screen pretty much finished me off. Warner Bros. I KNOW you are toying with my emotions and manipulating me, I can feel you doing it, with your atmospheric music and all the rest of it but you do it so well I don’t mind at all.
So yes we hit the gift shop on a high and spent a fortune, but again, all the products are such good quality. Nothing has been scrimped on so I can see why it is expensive.

Would you recommend other families visit the Studio Tour for a day out?

YES definitely. It is not just enjoyable it is inspirational! Since we came home, DS has made himself a Voldemort door sign and a Minecraft Dumbledore. DD has recreated Hogwarts in the garden with some spare wooden planks, and we have rewatched the Goblet of Fire and spotted so many more things thanks to the tour. It is a day out that we will never forget. Now we are saving up for a Christmas visit.

THANK YOU Warner Bros. and Mumsnet. This really has been a wonderful experience.

idleweiss · 25/03/2016 21:03

What were your first impressions on arrival?
Once we had gotten over our ridiculous bout of excitement of finally arriving at the studios, our first impressions were how grand, clean and well organised the outside of the studios and surrounding car parks looked. Inside, the excitement really started taking hold again, the lobby area was a great space, again very clean, with various images of the cast, props, a Starbucks (yay! caffeine!) and first glimpse of the souvenir shop to keep you occupied before (or even during) queuing for the actual tour.

How were the facilities throughout the Studio Tour?
Fantastic, everything was very clean. The cloakroom was a great idea and the staff there very efficient. The toilets were well maintained the Backlot Cafe was tidy despite being so busy as the staff there really kept on top of keeping tables clean, etc. There was always ample space when looking around the attraction, it never felt over crowded when walking about. The queues for the green screen pics and photo collections move quite swiftly and were well managed, which made a difference as hanging about and boredom was kept to a minimum. (also it was great fun watching everyone else on the screens having their turn first, and seeing the final picture results after!) The shops were well stocked and staffed and full of amazing items (DD was gutted I didn't bring enough money to buy a wand so we will be going onto the WB tours online shop to buy one!)

Were the staff friendly and helpful?
Very, impressively so! I had several chats to lovely members of staff about the film, it was great to see people who were really passionate about Harry Potter, an amazing knowledge of the films/books and who really enjoyed their jobs! They were all brilliant with my DD (dressed in her Harry garb!) really engaging her in conversation about her her favourite things about the films and telling her fun facts. All the staff I encountered were lovely, eager to help and really added to our enjoyment of the experience.

Did you and your family enjoy the experience?
Absolutely! We had an incredible time and are planning to visit again as there was just so much to take in, We would happily spend a whole day there!

Would you recommend other families visit the Studio Tour for a day out?
Yes, I already have done to lots of friends & colleagues and have suggested meeting up with other families to go together on a birthday day out!

If so, I am v v glad that you clocked my post. He was so polite to some clumsy randoms, he seemed so nice. He really made an impact and you should be very proud!

red333 · 25/03/2016 23:12

My daughter and I have been twice. Once on my birthday where the whole queue of over 100 people sang happy birthday to me. The second time was on dd's birthday. The birthday girl/boy gets to open the great hall doors which is so exciting.
The props were all amazing, my favourite parts were the hogwarts castle, it was winter at hogwarts when we went so it was dusted with snow. It actually brought me to tears. Being massive potter geeks it was amazing to see this beautiful castle in its entirety.
My other fave was the wands. Over 400 individually named wands. One for every person who worked on the Harry Potter films.
The shop was expensive but that's to be expected really. We'd saved our birthday money and treated ourselves to a wand each.
Dying to go again to see the train, hopefully we'll get there soon.

mcdog · 26/03/2016 07:31

First impressions:

As we drove up to the car park, both of my DS and me were squealing with excitement because of the enormous film shots that are posted to the walls of the building.
The car park was managed very well, and we were quickly directed to a space.
Security was swift but thorough, including both a bag search and being "wanded" for metal items by another security guard.
The queue was horrendous, but as one of my DS has ASD they allowed us to skip the queue, he would never ever have coped otherwise as it was so busy and crowded in the foyer.

Facilities:

The toilets were clean and plentiful, although mine had no toilet roll which is one of my ultimate bugbears!!
The food in the cafe was nice, although if I was paying I would have liked chips or wedges with the goujons. It wasn't really a meal just being the goujons and a salad.
Butterbeer was lovely, although it was a pain having to put 4 wet cups in my handbag. They need to provide a bag with them when they are bought.

Staff:

All the staff we met went way above and beyond. The man who was looking after us went and got my DS a Slytherin tie for free after he told him he hate gryffindor the shame

Very knowledgable, and quick to help.

Enjoyment level:

I absolutely adore Harry Potter so would have loved it regardless, but being objective, yes it was very very good.
My DS's were so excited to see everything, it was lovely watching the wonder in their little faces.

Recommendation:

Yes, I would absolutely recommend HP studios to other families, however:

  1. be aware that the queue on the way in is very very long!!
  2. the gift shop is £££. The wands my boys got were £26.99 each, and that was relatively cheap compared to some of the things in there. A notebook was £14.99 for example.
  3. if the children dress up they get lots of attention from staff :)

Thank you so so much mumsnet, we had a fantastic time.

Quills · 26/03/2016 07:45

Non attendee

I visited in 2012 with my best friend. We were ridiculously excited, and fortunately it didn't disappoint our high expectations! The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic, the tour itself was in depth, thorough and lasted a long time, and the photos we got still have pride of place on my wall. DD1 is very jealous, so hoping to make a return trip with her this year sometime, if only to taste the butterbeer again!
