M&S "behind the scenes" feedback thread - non attendees - chance to win £150 M&S giftcard! NOW CLOSED

This thread is for the 8 MNers who attended the M&S "behind the scenes" event at M&S Marble Arch on Thursday 4th December. This was a chance for these MNers to meet the Womenswear design and buying team at M&S and chat about about their womenswear range this Christmas and to get some top advice on the range.

Non attendees - for a chance to win a £150 M&S voucher, please share on this thread either the very best clothing item you have ever bought from M&S or the one thing they sell that always seems to find its way into your basket! Add your comment and you'll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £150 M&S giftcard Smile

The event consisted of MNers "shopping" for themselves and selecting items they think they'd like to buy - these were then tried on and chatted about with the M&S team.

Frances Russell, Womenswear Trading Director and Belinda Earl - Style Director - called in and chatted about how the business works, how they try to make sure what M&S offers meets the need of all their customers.

There was then an open discussion with other members of the M&S senior womenswear team about MNers top 3 loves and hates about M&S, what the ideal M&S would look like/sell, what are MNers favourite shops and what's most important to those attending in clothing.

The group also asked MNers - if MN ran the Womenswear business what 3 things would they do?

Note; M&S have submitted some answers to the most commonly asked questions on the recruitment form - see this link here for them - we hope to have some additional answers in the next day or so.

Attendees - please share below your responses to the following questions! And do add any photos you took of the day to the thread.

~ Please give an overview of the day
~ What items you picked and what you thought about them (would you buy them?)
~ Please share with MNers about the discussions on the day - what did you ask and what was the consensus?
~ What was your take on the question of "if MN ran the Womenswear business what 3 things would they do"?
~ What was your overall impression of the day? Are you glad you went?

Also M&S would love to know from attendees:
~ How important is the way something is made to you e.g. does it matter if it was made ethically or sustainably and do you check this?
~ Where do you get ideas and inspiration from for what clothing you want to buy?
~ How often do you update your wardrobe with new items?
~ How would you describe your personal style and taste?

Thanks!

I still have the item - it is a black velvet 'Chanel' style suit - jacket / long straight skirt to mid-calf. The pockets are edged with satin and it is a wonderful piece of clothing. I can't really get in it, but it is so beautiful and classic - you could wear it today and it would be perfect - that I have held onto it. Styling, finish, material and styling is timeless - bought it to wear for Christmas do's during late 80's. Looks so much more expensive than it was and I have seen nothing like it in a very long time. I miss M&S from the 80's / 90's, when every time I walked into a store I saw something I wanted .... big Sigh!

MaryWestmacott · 08/12/2014 19:26

Non-attendee here! I always end up buying knickers and tights in m&s, nowhere else seems to do such good tights.

Years ago a bought a silk and cotton mixed long sleeved grey t-shirt with a boat neck- it's washed really well and is unbelievable versatile - goes under a suit jacket, with jeans, casual skirts. Looks good as it is, also works as a layering piece.

I'm finally getting ready to retire it and there's a lack of boat neck tops in at the moment. Hmm

Follyfoot · 08/12/2014 19:26

Non attendee

I always buy opaque tights from M & S. They are just the right size and thickness for me, and last for years. Cant begin to think how old some pairs are Blush but they are all as good as new.

QuietNinjaTardis · 08/12/2014 19:26

Non attendee. I have bought so many nice clothes for my dd recently it's ridiculous. She's got a lovely burgundy dungarees styley dress with a gorgeous top with little deer and trees on. And a lovely cable knit jumper dress and a frilly swim nappy! and lots more that I'm hiding from Dh
I also like their bulk t shirts and long sleeve t shirts for my son. I buy a 4 pack for ds in summer and a 4 pack of long sleeves for the winter. They were great for when he was at nursery. I also love their trousers as they have adjustable waist bands which he needs as he is tall for his age so needs larger sizes but quite slim. If it doesn't adjust I dont buy it.
Think the best buy would be ds school uniform trousers. He started reception this year and so far they are holding up well! I have the added bonus that my lovely mil bought them so I didn't have to which was kind. Xmas Smile

DifferentNow · 08/12/2014 19:27

I buy tons of stuff in M&S - clothes, furniture and food. I always buy my underwear at M&S though. It's good quality and affordable and there's so much choice, I don't need to go anywhere else.

JuneFromBethesda · 08/12/2014 19:39

I buy lots of my shoes from M&S - one of the few places on the high street that can be relied upon to have true size 8s (ie 42s), and to have them in stock! I've had some great shoes over the years which I've worn to death and they've always been extremely good value.

One item of clothing that comes to mind is a pair of jeans I bought shortly after my 2nd child was born. I was in that rather miserable state where my pre-pregnancy clothes still didn't fit but I was sick of maternity clothes - and quite by chance I found a wonderfully forgiving and flattering pair of jeans in M&S. They made me feel human again and gave me an alternative to maternity trousers and tracksuit bottoms, and for that I will always be grateful Smile

Also love M&S tights, love the children's clothes - I could spend far too much in there on my kids. Interesting what the attendees say about the different lines in M&S womenswear - I've just started to pay more attention to the in-store branding and realise that I know I'm more likely to find something I like in, for example, the Autograph or Limited ranges than Indigo or Per Una.

ChippyMinton · 08/12/2014 19:40

It sounds like a fab day! Envy
I bought a skirt last winter which receives compliments every time I wear it - knee-length black on white pattern, with a lovely texture.
And my usual buys, apart from school uniforms every year, are black work trousers, winter and summer styles - cropped, narrow, linen, stretch, you name it I will have worn at some point.

Raahh · 08/12/2014 19:43

non-attendee-
Best thing i ever bought was a pair of Autograph shoes- bought on a whim the morning of my 30th birthday. I have worn them over and over again in the nearly 13(!) years since, they are a classic design that go with anything and haven't dated.

Something I have always bought from M and s (apart from the underwear) are the toiletries- since I was a teenager, I have always got magnolia shower gel and bath oil for Christmas from my gran. Not the most exciting, or pricey thing in the world, but I like it Grin

lilyloo · 08/12/2014 19:43

The underwear and pj's are always good value for money and last well.

Eustasiavye · 08/12/2014 19:45

Non attendee.

As well as underwear and tights, the thing I love best is a wool scarf that I bought about 4 years ago.
It's petrol blue and swirly. It always makes me feel at bit better on cold days.

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 19:54

oh i so wish I could have gone, I love Marks and find it frustrating in equal measure.

I do like that smaller stores have a bigger range of clothes now and the way you have revamped the workwear formal kind of range in our local small ish one . PERUNA has to go or be trimmed down, it is too much and used to take up half the floor.

I find the lack of seasonality frustrating - trying to buy shorts in July is a non starter it is all winter scarves.
I never ever buy bottoms at marks. I am a 12-14 with a LOW RISE. All your trousers do up under my tits even your low rise ones. Gap and banana republic really show you how to do trousers and styling generally for workwear.

I would like Limited to be a bit less teen orientated and more for edgier women in their 30s - some of their stuff is just too way out. Autograph looks ace online but the clothes are often all polyester and anyone who has an active job - say a teacher Wink would sweat like a horse in them.

A couple of years ago I had LOTS of Autograph platform suede heels. nothign has come near them now platforms are on the way out.

Talking of shoes, please revamp the trying on area - mirrors to admire your feet ( or general mirrors - epsecially in Marble arch ) are VERY hard to find and I jsut give up and walk out.
Also heating in marble arch was far too much in november. If your customers are in coats PLEASE bear us in mind.

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 19:55

also what is with the cutesty night wear for women with care bears on?

I had a cool thin wool Boden dressing gown once i loved - would be a great Marks staple
Also see the Boden ravello top - perfect workwear. ( No doubt you woudl do it in that heinous high viz orange you keep doing)

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 19:58

And WOOL SUITS for work with stretch in them - who wears sleeveless dresses to work in winter?

DrankSangriaInThePark · 08/12/2014 20:00

Non attendee.

This may be minging, but I have a pair of lacy black pants I bought in October 1987 (!!!!!) and they are still as good as new.

Seriously, the one item I have in almost every colour (except green, I don't do green) is the polo neck 95% cotton thick jumpers that cost about £20 each. I am wearing one as I type. They are my Autumn winter staple.

Jeggings also fab (thank the lord for somewhere that understands what long length really means!!)

Food wise- I would never buy brie from anywhere else as everyone else's tastes like soap for a fortnight, but M and S's is always perfect. And the only on the go sandwich is the cheese and celery (though it's not nearly as good now as it was in the 80s....)

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 08/12/2014 20:04

Attendee...

Attendees -

~ Please give an overview of the day
I agree with the other attendees and would also add that the M&S team were not only welcoming, but were also forthcoming about information on anything we asked and very open to our suggestions. I was very honest about my views, and the M&S people were receptive and not at all defensive. They would explain why things were the way they were, but appeared to really take on board what we had to say.

~ What items you picked and what you thought about them (would you buy them?)
I picked up some Autograph bags, shoes, coats, a shirt and trousers (workwear)

The bags are fabulous - beautiful leather, classic designs and top value for money. Maybe tone down the blingy gold hardware, though.

The shoes are also great, especially due to the Insolia weight distribution. However, they need a wider range of classic shoes (it's a bit light on this season ie where are the black leather court shoes, why no leopard skin, why no snakeskin? Re flats why aren't you doing some embellished ones like Russell&bromley and Boden?).

Re the coats, they are like Joseph and Jaeger, except for the fabric composition. Most of them are half acrylic. So, they look amazing, but won't perform well. If Zara can do 100% wool coats for sub £100, Autograph should be able to do them for £140 (one was £250 and was acrylic!).

The shirt was polyester and the trousers were half polyester. I should be able to buy a nice shirt or top from Autograph in natural fibres. I should be able to buy wool rich trousers (ie 80% or more wool).

As it is, I don't and won't buy my clothes from M&S until they change their fabrics.

~ Please share with MNers about the discussions on the day - what did you ask and what was the consensus?

I shared my views as per the above points. Also suggested that they had too much stock, so that the stores can be impossible to shop in. There was a suggestion of a classics range that they repeat every season. Boden, J Crew and Banana Republic do this, with great success. That way you know you know you can always get your favourite items, and they have names so you know exactly what to ask for.

~ What was your take on the question of "if MN ran the Womenswear business what 3 things would they do"?
I would remove a lot of the stock. Frankly, so much of it looks cheap and I wonder who it appeals to. Surely the "trendy" ranges are a bad idea - aren't the your all shopping at H&M, TopShop and ASOS, rather than Limited Collection? I want the clothes to be as good as the food, so make it a great quality, timeless product as that's what I expect from M&S. I feel they are there with the shoes and bags, but the womenswear needs much work. My red pen and I are ready Grin.

~ What was your overall impression of the day? Are you glad you went?
I really heart M&S as a brand, and the staff have always been so kind to me (esp when I am with my young children). So, I went wanting to help the brand be better. I was able to say exactly what I thought and why, which if taken on board can only help, since my views align with many other Mumsnetters (ie not just my big ego). So, yes, I am really glad I went. plus, it was fun.

Also M&S would love to know from attendees:
~ How important is the way something is made to you e.g. does it matter if it was made ethically or sustainably and do you check this?
Not a big concern of mine.

~ Where do you get ideas and inspiration from for what clothing you want to buy?
Blogs, Instagram, surfing the Net.

~ How often do you update your wardrobe with new items?
Far too often. At least fortnightly [cringe].

~ How would you describe your personal style?
Fairly smart and classic, but a little bit modern. Does anyone answer this without feeling ridiculous?

Maiyakat · 08/12/2014 20:06

Non-attendee. I have a fleece-lined knitted hoodie from the boys section that is perfect for curling up on the sofa on the long winter nights. As for the thing that ends up in my basket, that would be Percy Pigs....

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 20:06

iam so jealous Belinda

please marks get b and me back

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 08/12/2014 20:08

Would be much fun, Noelle, much fun!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/12/2014 20:09

Non-attendee

I have a fantastic pencil skirt, with a flippy fishtail hem, which I adore. Every time I wear it I get asked if I've lost weight!

I also really like the very pale wash 5 pocket jeggings - I virtually lived in them in the summer, rolled up with Converse.

Really like the Rosie silk underwear too, and the Autograph opaque tights.

Nottheshrinkingcapgrandpa · 08/12/2014 20:12

Non attendee here: I always bought t shirt vests for my grandad, ama I g quality and lasted years :)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/12/2014 20:12

And I absolutely loved the story of the gold dress btw. :)

MadisonMontgomery · 08/12/2014 20:12

Non-attendee. I have a pair of the petite jeggings which I LOVE - but have lost weight so need a smaller size but they're never in stock! Always buy multipacks of boy short knickers from there but the quality seems to be getting worse, last pack I bought the elastic at the waistband keeps coming loose, so stuck wearing old faded pairs cos they're still going strong!

I have always been disappointed with knitwear, but just acquired a lovely men's lambs wool jumper from there - so much better quality than the womens stuff!

CheeseEMouse · 08/12/2014 20:15

Non-attended: I always buy tights. Always. Durable, long enough and well priced!

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 08/12/2014 20:15

I was almost begging Kbear to choose the gold dress instead of something sensible, so I'm thrilled to read that you have it and are glad Grin and Wine to the dress

Kbear · 08/12/2014 20:24

BelindaAllWorkedOut... me and dress are now inseparable :) - link me to your blogs please ... I'd be interested in reading ... thanks
