This is the feedback thread for the MNers and MN bloggers who attended the MN event onboard Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas in Southampton on October 15.

The event was specifically for folks who had considered a cruise with their family but never been on one as Royal Caribbean wanted to showcase what they can offer for a family holiday.

Royal Caribbean say: "Thank you so much for coming along to join us on one of the world's biggest and most innovative ships for this one off event. We know there are lots preconceived ideas about cruise holidays and we aimed to show you what a holiday with Royal Caribbean is really like by inviting Mumsnetters who have never been on a cruise before to come onboard to see for themselves and discover the seven incredible neighbourhoods, each home to countless unique activities and experiences."

So attendees - please share generally with other MNers your experiences of the day and also answer the following questions.

Please also post your photos to the thread!

  • What experience or facility did you find onboard that you didn't expect?
  • What were your highlights of the day?
  • You chatted to lots of people onboard. Now imagine you and your family are going on holiday on a Royal Caribbean cruise - what facility / experience would your children be most excited about and what would you be looking forward to most?
  • What did you think of the facilities onboard for families: please think about food, drink, relaxation, kids etc?
  • After your experience on Oasis of the Seas, would you consider going on a cruise for a family holiday? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • Overall, if it came up in conversation, would you recommend going on a cruise to your friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Please note quotes from the thread as well as from the day, along with your photos and video may be used by Royal Caribbean on their website, on their blog, on social media and possibly elsewhere.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Thank you again to Mumsnet and Royal Carribean for a lovely day out.

What experience or facility did you find onboard that you didn't expect?
I definitely didn’t expect there would be an Ice Rink on Board and I would have loved to have seen it.
The Facilities for children of all ages were much more extensive than I expected; at 5 my youngest daughter would love to experiment in the science lab, and would really enjoy the art studio in addition to the more traditional games rooms.

What were your highlights of the day?
I loved being thoroughly spoiled. All of the staff we met on board gave us a genuine welcome and made me feel very special. The food was amazing, and I enjoyed being pampered by Wei who did my hand and arm massage. I thought the theatre show was very, very good and enjoyed window shopping in the Royal Arcade. I would have to include the Zip wire in my highlights too. I wasn’t sure I would do it, but am very pleased (and proud) that I did.

You chatted to lots of people onboard. Now imagine you and your family are going on holiday on a Royal Caribbean cruise - what facility / experience would your children be most excited about and what would you be looking forward to most?
My youngest was very excited to see the photos I took of Alex and Julien and would love to meet them; she would be delighted by carousel in the boardwalk area and the children’s pools. We didn’t get to see them at their best in sad and soggy Southampton, but they still looked fun and I’m sure that they would look even more vibrant and inviting under Caribbean skies. Meanwhile my Teenagers would make a beeline for the zip wire, flow-rider and climbing wall. And scream very loudly.

What did you think of the facilities onboard for families: please think about food, drink, relaxation, kids etc?
I thought there was a lot to do for all ages and I liked the variety of activities balancing active sports with quieter crafts for example, although I have a slight reservation about whether we might end up doing separate activities rather than enjoying family time together, although I imagine that there would be time for both.
The food we had was truly delicious, and I thought there was a really good choice of formal and informal dining options many of which were included in the cost of a cruise while others were extra; Our children would particularly like Johnny rockets burger bar and Sorrento’s Pizzeria, and I was pleased to find that the spa café does healthy options to balance out the many treats that I would be tempted by.

I wonder if relaxation might be more of a challenge? If I’m honest I was disappointed with the cabin we saw, although in theory it was for 4, it was really quite small and I can’t see how I would put my youngest daughter to bed when she is tired, without compromising our enjoyment or relaxation. I prefer not to use baby sitters when we are on holiday so that we can enjoy family time together and so this is something of a sticking area for me. I would have liked to have seen a wider choice of cabins to see if something else would suit us better.

After your experience on Oasis of the Seas, would you consider going on a cruise for a family holiday? If so, why? If not, why not?

After your experience on Oasis of the Seas, would you consider going on a cruise for a family holiday? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would definitely consider it, but not yet. As I have said I loved the activities on board, but I would prefer to wait until my youngest daughter is old enough that we could enjoy some of the evening entertainment with her.

Overall, if it came up in conversation, would you recommend going on a cruise to your friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would recommend it to couples or to families with older children who could make the most of the activities on board.

Thank you so much to Mumsnet and Royal Caribbean for a great day.

  • What experience or facility did you find onboard that you didn't expect?
I was very excited to hear there was an ice rink, and would have loved to have seen that. The surf simulator was also really impressive. I liked the electronic boards you could tap if you were lost! I was pleasantly surprised that the all inclusive restaurant was waiter service and not a buffet.
  • What were your highlights of the day?
I loved the zip wire (did it twice!) and think that would appeal to older children and adults - great that it is not an extra charge. I had never been on a cruise ship before, so it was all rather exciting.
  • You chatted to lots of people onboard. Now imagine you and your family are going on holiday on a Royal Caribbean cruise - what facility / experience would your children be most excited about and what would you be looking forward to most?
My 7 year old daughter would absolutely love ... all of it! We would love wondering around the area with the carousel - so much for children to do there. This area also had a nice spacious feel. She would love the pools and I would love lying on a lounger watching her! She is always impressed by large characters eg the Madagascar characters, so we woudl look forward to seeing them. A cabin with a balcony would be just amazing - very spacious feel surprisingly.
  • What did you think of the facilities onboard for families: please think about food, drink, relaxation, kids etc?
I was very impressed by the kids club facilities. It did not at all seem like just dropping them off in a room. The staff we met were motivated and seemed very safety conscious and knowledgeable. It was good that there were several different areas and the science activities would be a highlight. Hard to know about children's food as we went to two rather nice restaurants. I was anxious about the drinks packages - I think the one including alcoholic drinks was $55 per day - rather expensive. I didn't like the 'soda package' for children - the thought of children being able to fill up 'soda' cups many times through the day for the whole holiday was rather horrifying! Was there water or healthier drinks available? I did not really like the first area we came to - the Royal Promenade - it was rather dark and just reminded me of Las Vegas. I was not interested in any of the shops there, and would probably avoid that area. I did notice that the two restaurants we went to did not have vegetarian items on the menu, although I asked for vegetarian each time and dishes were provided. Is this because it is an American company I suppose? My family is all vegetarian, so this may be tricky for us.
  • After your experience on Oasis of the Seas, would you consider going on a cruise for a family holiday? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would definitely consider doing a cruise, probably for a week or less. I don't think I'd like to do transatlantic (I realise that hardly ever happens anyway) as it would seem too long. As a single parent, it would be very expensive as I would have to pay for two adults - I am looking forward to Royal Caribbean having the single rooms, as was mentioned in the round table discussion.
  • Overall, if it came up in conversation, would you recommend going on a cruise to your friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, I definitely would recommend. There is something for everyone to do. With the added highlight of visiting a few countries in one holiday without the hassle of moving hotel rooms!

I think I've got Karen and Megan mixed up! Apologies - it was Karen (and Adele and David) who was so knowledgeable over lunch!

ChippyMinton · 18/10/2014 18:24

What experience or facility did you find onboard that you didn't expect?

There are some novel activities such as mini-golf, ice-skating, climbing wall, zipwire. And the carousel - just lovely. And the Central Park.

What were your highlights of the day?
Dinner at Chops Grille was my favourite, closely followed by getting a hug from King Julian (of Madagascar fame). Also the staff were delightful. I loved that their name badges have their home country on them.

You chatted to lots of people onboard. Now imagine you and your family are going on holiday on a Royal Caribbean cruise - what facility / experience would your children be most excited about and what would you be looking forward to most?

My DC have already (metaphorically) packed their bags. DD(10) loves the carousel, DS1(13) fancies the flowrider, DS2 (12) the pools, mini-golf and the teen hangout. They were amazed to see Johnny Rockets on board Smile.
I would be looking forward to perusing the daily programme in Cruise Compass and planning what to do while the DC were off enjoying themselves – I’d want to experience everything! DH would probably emerge from the stateroom at noon, go to the gym, hang out in the sports bar, snooze by the pool, and then be ready for a family dinner and catch up.
We would have carefully chosen the itinerary to include places we all want to see, and look forward to maximising time ashore and experiencing the local colour.

What did you think of the facilities onboard for families: please think about food, drink, relaxation, kids etc?

Food – it would have been interesting to experience the inclusive dining options, as this would be the reality when taking the family, perhaps with one night out at Chops Grille or one of the other speciality restaurants. The main restaurant menu and restaurant looked good, as we would want to sit and eat together after a busy day. It wasn’t clear from our tour what the breakfast and lunch options were and where they could be taken.

Drink: transparent pricing is key here, especially as it’s essential for kids to easily keep hydrated in hot weather – what is included, what is extra, and what are the choices? Unlimited access to sweet, fizzy drinks would not be appropriate, for example.

For adults, again, what are the options with and without alcohol included? I tend to drink less with the children around, so would be miffed to be paying the same as someone who was able to indulge all day and night long.

Relaxation: My main concern is how easy it is to access the various facilities and activities when the ship is full.

After your experience on Oasis of the Seas, would you consider going on a cruise for a family holiday? If so, why? If not, why not?

I think we would, if the right itinerary was available. I would wait until all my DC qualified as ‘teens’ though, so they could hang out together and enjoy everything on offer. Having said that, the Adventure Ocean kids facilities, and the staff, were impressive, for younger children.

Overall, if it came up in conversation, would you recommend going on a cruise to your friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

I was very impressed with the whole Royal Caribbean experience and Oasis of the Seas, and would definitely recommend it.

Firstly, thankyou to Adele, Karen and David who took us around. Your hospitality was great.

What experience or facility did you find onboard that you didn't expect?

I was hoping to have seen more of the ship than we did. There was quite a bit of waiting around and it would have been nicer if smaller groups of us were able to take separate tours.

I was not expecting an ice-rink, but nor do I find it necessary. I would have liked to have seen the cinema and the library, as these are things we would enjoy as a family. I would have liked to have seen the general dining areas and the running track.

The rooms were rather small. I knew they would be cramped but they were too cramped for my comfort. I understand that space is a premium but I would not have enjoyed staying in a cabin that size for any amount of time. It is a shame we did not get to see the larger rooms.

The touchscreen boards were really helpful at identifying a route but I don’t know how helpful they would be in real life as we were only shown them once and then walked to the location rather than navigated to it. It seemed confusing to all that on several occasions we were led somewhere only to be led back again to correct our route. This was most annoying when trying to disembark.

What were your highlights of the day?

Seeing the ship was impressive. I am an engineering geek and loved understanding its size and scale.

Despite not volunteering for the zipline I managed to experience it. It was fun but a bit gimmicky. I do like the sound of the sky diving pod though, perhaps because it would last longer than 45 seconds. The time to prepare Vs activity ratio would be higher.

The staff were amazing. Everyone was friendly and wanted to make our stay pleasurable.

The food was wonderful but as I said on the day it would be nice to experience, or at least see, the regular restaurants. I enjoy fine dining as much as the next person but I imagine when onboard 60% of dining will be made up of the less formal dining plan.

You chatted to lots of people onboard. Now imagine you and your family are going on holiday on a Royal Caribbean cruise - what facility / experience would your children be most excited about and what would you be looking forward to most?

If we were to cruise it would definitely be a small ship. Whilst the ship was lovely it was incredibly noisy. I would imagine it would be unbearable to my DS when at capacity. It was an assault on the ears. At the end of the day I was glad to disembark and escape the noise. I didn’t get to experience how soundproof a room could be as we viewed them in large groups.

I would look forward to the dining but as someone mentioned upthread I would have like to have seen more fruit and vegetables on offer. The portions that came at dinner were tiny and I do try to get as much healthy things into them as possible.

What did you think of the facilities onboard for families: please think about food, drink, relaxation, kids etc?

The facilities were great. Just not for us. I travel so as to spend time with my family. We like doing things together but because of their ages and sizes most of our activities if we were onboard would have meant separating so as both DD and DS got to do their own things. To me it felt like lots of the activities met individual needs but not family needs. Perhaps if it were a cruise with lots of sightseeing opportunity I would feel differently.

When I have used kids clubs in the past it has been for a morning session so as my DH and I can go diving or take part in a grown up activity. We have only ever used them when it has been a good ratio of adults to children. I would not feel happy leaving my child in a club with up to 75 kids to 3 staff. No matter how qualified they are or how many activities they have planned I do not feel comfortable with those ratios. Also, mine are different ages so would need to use separate clubs which they would not be happy about.

After your experience on Oasis of the Seas, would you consider going on a cruise for a family holiday? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would consider cruising just not on this ship. I prefer a quieter more intimate holiday. I was hoping to be persuaded by the attractions onboard but experiencing the boat has put me off.

I was disappointed in the smell of cigarettes coming through into the gym. This would be the last place I would expect to smell this.

I was disappointed in the general lack of visibility of prices for what is offered. The website has a list stating what is and isn’t included but it does not differentiate between drinks packages etc. It felt as though there were lots of hidden costs to be navigated whilst onboard. I prefer to see upfront prices and costs without feeling as though I have been tricked.

Overall, if it came up in conversation, would you recommend going on a cruise to your friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

For my family no, for the reasons stated above. For others perhaps.

Thank-you Mumsnet and Royal Caribbean for providing a most memorable day and opportunity to experience the Oasis of the Seas in all its finery.

Our hosts Adele, Karen and David were brilliant, they were professional and congenial throughout the day. Thank-you.

In response to the questions asked:-

What experience or facility did you find onboard that you didn't expect?
I wasn't expecting a ice skating rink or carousel.

What were the highlights of the day?
I had a great day, I really enjoyed it. The highlights were the amazing food, the quality and presentation was outstanding. It was such a treat to be wined and dined and all the restaurant staff were lovely.
The show was pretty impressive too. I also found the arm and hand massage a bit of a treat and the spa staff were very professional and informative.

Imagine you and your family are going on holiday on a Royal Caribbean cruise - What facility/experience would your children be most excited about and what would you be looking forward to most?

My children would love the kids club and all the activities they had to offer, they would also love the surf simulator and zip wire.
I would be looking forward to the spa, the swimming pool and the food. I would also be excited about experiencing new countries and cities in one holiday.

What did you think of the facilities onboard for families: Please think about food, drink relaxation, kids etc?

The recreational facilities on board are impressive but I am uneasy with how many people would all be using them all at once when at sea and the thought of standing in queues for these attactions would fills me with dread. The kids club was well managed and the staff member we spoke to was enthusiastic and well trained, she stated that a lot of the staff had specific training in teaching or childcare. As others have said the number ratio seems very high, I am sure it is correct but for the size of the rooms I just can't imagine them not feeling really cramped and overcrowded. I liked the idea of the more formal ' lessons' with experiments and creative experiences.
All food preferences and idiosyncrasies could be catered for aboard the ship I am sure, the staff were all very accommodating and only to happy to help.
The stateroom we viewed was, in my opinion small, it would be too small for me to consider spending much time in there with 2 children sleeping on a sofa bed. In its favour it did have a balcony which when cruising would hopefully have beautiful views that would detract from this, Southampton docks didn't manage this in the rain.

Would you consider going on a cruise?
Yes but maybe on a smaller ship. I dislike crowds and crowded places for long periods so I do wonder whether I am the ideal client. I would definitely have to save up for a larger cabin.

Overall, if it came up in conversation , would you recommend going on a cruise to your friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I was really impressed by the ship, its facilities and all it had to offer and I have already recommended it to family and friends.

Photos to follow..

Eve · 21/10/2014 13:14

Firstly can I start by thanking mumsnet and Royal Caribbean for the day. I live quite local and have often seen the cruise liners in dock and always wondered what they are like and if I would like a cruise.

  • What experience or facility did you find onboard that you didn't expect?

The different areas and themes of the different areas surprised me , particularly the park, though it would have been nice to have had seating in the park as opposed to it be somewhere to transit through. The size of the outdoor theatre and climbing walls were impressive and impressed my teens. It is such a big ship there was so much I'm sure we didnt see, like the ice rink , the library etc.

The electronic boards were very useful and I saw lots of people using them to try and figure out where they were.

I didn't expect the casino to be smoking though, that would put me off going in. The stateroom (cabin) we saw was quite small, not much bigger than the double bed, and wouldn't really be somewhere to spend time during the day.

  • What were your highlights of the day?

There were so many highlights in fact the whole day was one. The food was excellent, the spa treatment lovely with such nice staff, the zip line and the theatre show was incredible, really talented artists.

  • You chatted to lots of people onboard. Now imagine you and your family are going on holiday on a Royal Caribbean cruise - what facility / experience would your children be most excited about and what would you be looking forward to most?

My children would be looking forward to the climbing wall, the flow rider and the pools. (though would be quite interested to know how busy these get on peak holiday cruise times). I would be most looking forward to not making any decisions on where we are going, where we will eat and doing nothing but sitting and reading. I think I would miss the annual sat nav holiday row with my husband though!

  • What did you think of the facilities onboard for families: please think about food, drink, relaxation, kids etc?

The food was superb, though would have liked to have tired the included restaurants rather then the premium ones. The restaurants were all decorated well and the waiting staff all incredibly attentive. There was a lot of choice of places to eat, but the free hotdogs would probably receive a lot of visits from my youngest, and it would be nice for them as teenagers to dine independently from the parents occasionally. The drinks package with unlimited fizzy drinks would not appeal to my teenagers as they don't do fizzy drinks thankfully.

  • After your experience on Oasis of the Seas, would you consider going on a cruise for a family holiday? If so, why? If not, why not?

I'm not sure I could jump in immediately to a long cuise, however, my husband and I are considering a short 3 day cruise from Southampton with my 2 teenage boys to see what we think. Only issue may be the weather in the English Channel.

  • Overall, if it came up in conversation, would you recommend going on a cruise to your friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Its come up in conversation a lot, when people have found out I spent the day on the Oasis of the Seas, everyone is very interested in what its like, the food, the facilities, what did I think, would I go on it again. I would suggest what I plan to do and that is go on a short cruise to try it.
