This thread is for the Mumsnetters who attended one of the exclusive MN preview screenings of Labor Day on the 18th of March. We hope you all had a great time and enjoyed the film!

From Academy Award® winning director Jason Reitman, "Up In The Air", "Juno", comes "Labor Day". A story that centres on 13-year-old Henry Wheeler, who struggles to be the man of his house and care for his reclusive mother Adele (Kate Winslet) while confronting all the pangs of adolescence. On a back-to-school shopping trip, Henry and his mother encounter Frank Chambers (Josh Brolin), a man both intimidating and clearly in need of help, who convinces them to take him into their home and later is revealed to be an escaped convict. The events of this long Labor Day weekend will shape them for the rest of their lives.

You can view the film trailer here:

Below are a few questions for you to answer but please do add any other comments you may have.

We'd also love it if you could upload some pictures from the screening to this thread.

  • What was the screening like? Which one did you go to? Who did you go for the screening with?
  • What was your overall opinion of the film?
  • Please give a brief, three word review of the film - your "poster quote"
  • Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? (5 is highest and 1 is lowest)
  • What was your favourite scene in the film? Please describe it
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Labor Day to friends and family? Why?

As an extra bonus: everyone who adds their review here will be entered into a prize draw where five winners will win a pair of cinema vouchers!

Thanks!

  • What was your overall opinion of the film? It was beatuifully shot and well acted, I felt life I was actually in the middle of a hot summer day, however I found the film to be a little slow overall.

Although it seems to have got horrible reviews in the press, I actually quite enjoyed it. It's a bit slow, but I did become completely immersed in the film. Agree with other posters, a tearjerker! Would recommend, though not sure if it's worth the price of a cinema ticket and may wait till it's out on DVD

The screening was quite full at Sheffield! I attended the screening with my DD.

What was your overall opinion of the film?

We loved the film. It gripped us to the core and at several points, we burst into tears. It was emotionally sensitive, incredibly tactile and magnificently portrayed.

Please give a brief, three word review of the film - your "poster quote"

Unconventional love. Lasting.

Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? (5 is highest and 1 is lowest)

5 out of 5 from both of us.

What was your favourite scene in the film? Please describe it

The scene with the peach pie. So tactile, so sensual & so wonderfully directed.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. One of the best films we have ever seen, I kid you not!

  • What was the screening like? Which one did you go to? Who did you go for the screening with?
We went to Preston Odeon I went with my teenage daughter
  • What was your overall opinion of the film? We did not know much about the story before going and found we got so involved in the story. I completely agree with the shocked noises across the cinema at the slap seen I could hear the AIBU posts brewing.
  • Please give a brief, three word review of the film - your "poster quote" Enthralling emotional journey
  • Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? (5 is highest and 1 is lowest) 4 1/2
  • What was your favourite scene in the film? Please describe it
The cooking scene it reminded me of watching Ghost as a teenager I couldn't take that part seriously at the time but the idea that it influneces the boys life is heart warming.
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Labor Day to friends and family? Why?
i would recommend it because it challenged my thinking it went against what I thought I would think if presented with the facts. I would be careful who I mentioned it to because I found the stillbirth and miscarriages parts hard to watch but could also see how it was a huge part of the story. It was much better than I anticipated I do not think I would have gone out of my way to watch it without free tickets but I am really glad I did. I also found myself thinking about it in the days that followed.
