This thread is now closed

With a rise in extraordinary weather events around the world and activists like Greta Thunberg in the public eye, more people than ever before are engaging with and are worried about climate change. Following the launch of the “Portraits from the Precipice” campaign - which places art that inspires action on climate change on digital billboards across the country - we’d like to hear your thoughts on the Climate Emergency.

Here's what Octopus Energy – the green energy supplier behind Portraits from the Precipice – has to say: “With climate experts giving humanity 10 years to slow rising global temperatures, the time to take action for the planet is now. We all have a crucial role to play in combating the climate emergency.

Whether it be to switch to a renewable energy company, to buy an electric vehicle or even to just make small dietary changes or reduce the amount of plastic waste in your home… acknowledging the problem is just step one, we now need to act.”

Thinking of the Climate Emergency, what are your biggest concerns, if any, for yours and your children’s future? Are there any small things your family does to try and help? What would you recommend as being the most effective change people can make in helping the fight against Climate Change?

How aware are your children of the Climate Emergency? How do you talk to them about it? Do you think schools are doing enough to educate children on the Climate Emergency?

All who share their thoughts on the Climate Emergency on the thread below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list and provided by Mumsnet). Octopus Energy will also donate £300 to a charity fighting climate change, of the winner’s choice.

Thanks and good luck!

Not a popular opinion but is it an emergency? Greta whatever her name is grates on me, try getting your education in as I'm pretty sure there is a future for you. I use green energy, I've always recycled and upcycled and I don't believe that we are seeing more of the weathers, just we have more means of them been broadcast. Planets have a life cycle and we can't control everything

I am concious of how our everyday life impacts in the climate issue. However most of the larger things we could do, such as getting an electric car or making our home more eco friendly come with such a large price tag there is no way a working family can afford to make the changes needed. We can make small changes all we want but its the bigger things that will truly make the difference... maybe the government needs to invest in supporting people on the breadline make those changes.

The climate has always been changing but much of our ‘modern’ ways cause damage to our climate. We recycle as much as we can and try to avoid the use of plastic as much as possible but it’s very difficult it’s horrendous to see the recycling waste each week. We need the big companies to change their packaging for a start.
We do try to buy things produced locally. Unfortunately with globalisation so much is imported from miles away.

I try and do what is in my power to make a difference but it can feel overwhelming especially seeing others littering plastic really gets to me x

I think it’s extremely worrying for the future of our children, I have become more greener, recycle and do what I can but it’s the government and companies that should lead the way to do the same.

Climate change worries me and yes I think we can all make changes in our life however until big companies and corporations start to become more environmentally friendly I don't think our efforts will do much to help.
