This activity has now closed.

It’s September, and for most families that can mean only one thing – back to school. And with that comes the daily duty of whisking everyone out the door on time, helping them out with homework, and guiding your kids through playground politics. To say term time is jam-packed is an understatement – that’s why we’re so keen to hear how your wind down with your kids after the day’s hurly burly.

Here’s what IKEA have to say:
“We all know that every child is different. The same applies here: where one might like to sit and colour, another might want to play football in the garden. The secret is to make things easy for them, keeping all their favourite things organised and easy to find. That way they can happily while away the hours with minimal fuss.
Speaking of reading, a great way to nurture it is to give your child a dedicated space just for them and their books. Keep theirs on the lowest shelf, give them a comfy chair to settle into and they’ll be away.
Arts and crafts are a great way to relax too, and brilliant way to nurture your child’s creative side. Encourage their inner Picasso by keeping all of their supplies in easy to find containers right by their desk. Don’t forget to keep your carpet from turning into a masterpiece though – a plastic floor protector is a lifesaver here.”

So, what are your tips for winding down after school? Do you have certain activities you can bank on to keep things calm? Maybe there’s a toy or game you’ve got, ready to play with when they get home? Or maybe it’s a spot of drawing that does the trick?

Whatever you do, we’d love to know. Share your tips for how you relax and wind down with your children after school on the thread below and be in with a chance of winning a £300 IKEA voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Delighted to meat you

HairyDogsOfThigh · 20/10/2019 13:34

We've caught a live one! You'll be welcomed in Cuntington Castle, Living, just follow the trail of piss back there.

LivingTheThighLife · 20/10/2019 14:14

Send me the Satnav for Cuntington castle - my sense of smell is afflicted by the stench of blood.
I shall bring my cock-kicking stegosaurus to swim in the moat. He will eat the ducks and piss on the stairs.

DanglyTasselsOfThigh · 20/10/2019 14:45

I've sent you a zip wire Living, follow the Bat signal to Cuntington!

Drawing and creative activities always help with winding down, or reading a book or listening to a podcast or audiobook together.

dwerry · 20/10/2019 15:26

We always have a drink and a biscuit and talk about what we've been up to. They then either play in the garden if the weather is OK or watch TV or a video while I get tea.

I usually set out a blanket on the living room floor with a few favorite puzzles on top. A coffee table may work nicely for a work surface too, depending on the size of the puzzle. My kids love to come home from school, change into their pajamas, and have a puzzle and pajama picnic with some of their favorite mess-free snacks. They are so happy to do this, and it is quick and easy to set up! While they are working on their puzzles, I may ask them about their day and use the time to get caught up with them. This is definitely one of our favorite activities to relax after a long day at school.

We cuddle on the sofa and chat about our day.

Janina71 · 20/10/2019 20:23

Longer walk home via the canal path (more time in the afternoon!) then a chat about the day/homework around the table together

suewilly · 20/10/2019 20:32

We like to take Bruno for a walk in the park. Bruno is so pleased to see everyone when they get home from school. His pleasure in seeing everyone, and the obvious enjoyment that Bruno and the kids get from running around like mad things, makes the perfect transition from school time to home time.

rhinosuze · 20/10/2019 21:09

A chat, a snack and then some drawing or reading

newhouse30 · 20/10/2019 21:59

We take our time walking home from school and we chat about the day and giggle!

emmafifema78 · 20/10/2019 22:21

We bust out some moves in the car to our fave tunes!

msemegs · 20/10/2019 22:38

I get them a snack and drink as soon as we get in and talk about the day. That gives them the window of opportunity to let me know of any worries they have brought home from their day and helps them unwind. I let them have a little tablet time after snack and then they play with toys.

mamof3boys · 20/10/2019 23:01

We chat after school about anything and everything. It's always a good way to wind down after the school day

Gill81uk · 20/10/2019 23:23

We get some fruit and have a snuggle on the sofa and watch something, and then we do the school reading books when they've had chance to chill a bit.

matphil · 21/10/2019 00:05

My little has only just started school and when he gets home he is very tired, so we have a sit down with some snacks and talk about his day. When he's ready he plays with his cars and trains.

WombleishofThigh · 21/10/2019 00:07

We discuss the day's shoplifting efforts and if the darling moppets come back with some decent swag, it's fish and chips for tea! For me, that is, they get their regular toast and water. It doesn't do to spoil little tots.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 21/10/2019 02:42

@WombleishofThigh Spare the cod, spoil the child?

snare · 21/10/2019 09:40

reading a book together

WombleishofThigh · 21/10/2019 10:15

It's the only way Kit Grin

angela121262 · 21/10/2019 10:52

Walking in the park

barearsedloverofthigh · 21/10/2019 15:00

We write limericks

Borderkitt · 21/10/2019 16:59

Relaxing on the sofa chatting about our day

blue25 · 21/10/2019 17:34

In nice weather we’ll go to the beach. In winter, we just relax playing board games.
