This activity is now closed

Reading to your DCs can be a great source of not only downtime and bonding but it can also help your children learn and develop. Many of our most nostalgic memories contain at least one recollection of our parents reading our favourite book to us, therefore Scottish Friendly would love to know which your favourite books are to read to your children and why? Plus what are your favourite childhood books?

Do you love reading the classic Winnie the Pooh because you get to do all the voices? Perhaps your DC loves adventure books and you’re not one to shy away from acting out the scenes? Or do you love a books that your child can read along with you? Maybe you and your DC love to get all cosy with some pillows and blankets and read their favourite Roald Dahl book together?

Here’s what Scottish Friendly have to say: “With just two weeks left of summer, perhaps it’s getting to that time when you’re looking for new ideas to keep your little darlings amused. Even if it’s just to give yourself the chance of a well-deserved cuppa and to put your feet up for longer than 5 minutes!

Scottish Friendly is celebrating 20 years of supporting children’s literacy with a game your kids can play called ‘Letterfall’. It’s fun and educational too, and to celebrate this milestone anniversary we’ve added an extra twist! Now kids all over the UK can play to try to beat the current high score for a chance to win a fantastic prize for their school – an iPad Pro, iPad and an iPad Mini are all up for grabs! Visit the site to play (terms apply, more details on the website.)”

Whatever your favourite book to read to your child is and why, share it on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I love David Eddings books as they really capture the imagination. Ours absolutely love it and are completely gripped!

melanieb32 · 24/08/2018 15:08

I read to my 3 year old most nights and have done since he was a baby, at Christmas we always read the "night before Christmas" one of his particular favourites is Scaredy Boo but he also loves Peppa Pig books and anything with a dinosaur in it at the moment!

sophiefx · 24/08/2018 15:24

My little girl loves Peppa Pig, she could listen to me read them all day!

MissusDave · 24/08/2018 15:28

Very tough decision, but we're into Spot in a big way at the moment! Our DD can name the animals and is practising her counting so it's great to talk about the book as well as read through the story.

compy99 · 24/08/2018 15:29

we don't have a particular type of story book, we like the Mr Men series and anything Julia Donaldson. The library is a great place for finding new children authors.

Minnibix · 24/08/2018 15:34

I always loved to read the Grimm's Fairy Tales, the kids would always get so exited when they chose which one (or two) I was going to read, and as they were nice short stories they were perfect for bedtime stories

vixxx666 · 24/08/2018 15:44

Harry Potter books and the Roald Dahl books.

RhubarbAndCustards · 24/08/2018 15:54

We worked our way through all of Julia Donaldson books. Now she’s a bit older we love Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton and have read most of the Worst Witch series too.

My one year old loves Oliver Jeffers books.
He's obsessed with 'How To Catch A Star', and "star" was even one of his first words.

ThemisA · 24/08/2018 17:08

We love the old classics Pooh, Wind and the Willows, Enid Blyton, Dahl, as well as more modern treats - Malorie Blackman, Potter, Philip Pullman - I could go on and on

Yellowbear123 · 24/08/2018 18:37

Traditional ladybird story books, Goldilocks and the three bears, the elf and the shoemaker etc. We always enjoy our reading time.

boptanana · 24/08/2018 18:37

We love the quangle wangle’s hat.

Cupcakeicecream · 24/08/2018 18:50

In this house we adore and cherish the classics they are timeless. Our favourite collection is th3 Brambly hedge collection. I can get distracted by the illustrations when reading my child the books. The art is so intricate and I find new things each time as they are so detailed and fascinating. Wilfred is a favourite he is mischevious and he always has to find ways out of a dilemma. I loved these as child and enjoy sharing my childhood with my child reliving the memories and love snuggling up to read we like them that much we have them on DVD.

phillie1 · 24/08/2018 19:02
