Potty training can feel like a daunting task that consists of tantrums, tears and mess. With so many different products and advice out there it can be difficult to know where to start. Potty training is a great milestone to be celebrated as your child takes a big step towards become a big girl or boy. The potty training experts at Huggies® Pull-Ups® would love to know your best tips and tricks for an easy transition to the toilet.

Here’s what HUGGIES® have to say: “Trusted by millions of parents and carers around the world, HUGGIES® Pull Ups® Potty Training underwear supplies all the features you need to train in a safe and consistent way. Take a look at our steps to potty training success here

“Perhaps the biggest achievement in potty success is recognising the need to go. To help little ones on this journey, when little accidents happen, the unique learning layer in Huggies® Pull-Ups® briefly mimics the feeling of real wet underwear, before quickly drawing the moisture away. It’s a feature of the product that many people don’t realise exists, but it’s one of the best tips for helping little ones learn wet from dry in a protected environment, so that they ultimately learn to stay dry on their own and can progress to pants quicker.”

Perhaps you’ve found training pants to be your potty training saviour? Maybe you have a potty both upstairs and downstairs so that you’re ready for anything? Or is your biggest tip to just let your little one take control?

Whatever your best tip and trick for potty training, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one winner will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

Wait til they are old enough otherwise you will be driven crazy by the whole thing!

Firewall · 17/08/2018 19:52

Wait til they're ready and it's easier when they can talk or communicate

Picklestar · 17/08/2018 19:58

My best tips would be.....
Start when your child is ready & they want to start, we found this worked for our son & potty training happened quicker.
Also, make sure a potty is always handy, we had a potty upstairs and downstairs.
We tried to make potty training fun, like a big adventure with rewards for effort.
We found the potty training experience non traumatic & quite fun!

Practice makes perfect!

Easylikeasonntagmorgan · 17/08/2018 21:37

Always get the child to use the potty in the bathroom, then empty the potty into the toilet afterwards. Makes the transition to the toilet much easier.

runkaterun · 17/08/2018 21:50

Wait till they're ready. Then really concentrate on it

beckyinman · 17/08/2018 22:56

Bribing, don't make a big deal over accidents, but do make a big deal when they d a good job. Plus a quick wake up before you go to bed to take them for a quick wee to get them through the night - they are usual so sleepy they go straight back to sleep afterwards

sadiewoohoo · 18/08/2018 00:00

Reward reward reward! Literally make a big deal of every little victory!

I used a book called potty training in one week, followed every step and it worked a treat. Highly recommend

QuackPorridgeBacon · 18/08/2018 10:15

Wait until they are ready.

4GreenApples · 18/08/2018 12:42

I’d recommend going straight to pants and skipping pull ups altogether.

We’ve not tried Huggies pull ups.
But we did try other brands, and they were useless with potty training. DC couldn’t tell the difference between them and normal nappies, and used them as normal nappies - so no attempt to use the potty or tell an adult about needing (or having done) wees or poos while wearing the pull ups.

Potty training moved much faster once it was pants full time.

Also wait until the child is able to show an awareness of having done wees / poos and is capable of communicating this to an adult.

farhanac · 18/08/2018 18:28

Would agree with avoiding pull ups, an unnecessary step

MunchyMunchkin · 18/08/2018 18:32

Wait until they are ready and have the ability to go more than 30mins without a trip to the loo.
Accept that you can't night train them - they have to make sufficient hormone to surpress night time utine production to be dry overnight.

sealight123 · 18/08/2018 19:23

When we potty trained we had the potty there from very early on for her to sit on and get used to. As soon as she could walk we moved to the pull-up nappies and then slowly progressed to the Huggies Pull-ups.

I think the biggest thing is to not be force it. Like many things, children develop at different rates and if you force it, it will take longer and you all be miserable and most likely covered in wee and poo Grin

Wait until when they are ready. It also helps to do it in the summer.

sunshinemum83 · 19/08/2018 08:49

All the tips mentioned so far are useful, I would say definitely lots of patience, lots of cheap underwear (I picked my daughter's favourite characters and animals)... We haven't used rewards chart but I was rewarding her with stickers each time she made wee or poo. Nappies/pull-ups are a bit confusing but I had to use them from time to time when we were out and about without easy access to toilet...

Breeze81 · 19/08/2018 09:36

Patience and encouragement go a long way. Let them run around the house with nothing on from the waist down so they are ready to use the potty once they need to go. Ask them a million times a day if they need to use the potty. Don't make a big deal of accidents.

WowOoo · 19/08/2018 10:12

For us is was not to push them when they are not ready. We left it late and it seemed to go far smoother than friends who'd tried too soon. Lucky it was in the summer so they could go nappy free in the garden.

strawberrisc · 19/08/2018 10:39

Take your cue from the toddler. Don't be stressed or they will pick up on it. Celebrate the successes but don't be disappointed when it doesn't go right. We all got there in the end!

meepmoop79 · 19/08/2018 16:05

You need to wait until your child is ready, otherwise its a very messy waste of time.

BikeRunSki · 19/08/2018 17:22

What 'til they ask, and it'll be doe in a week.

Let them know it's an option. Both mine told me "Pants today" and we were done with weed and poos, night and day in a few days. Admittedly, I waited this long with my first child because I was pregnant when he was about the right age and too sick to contemplate it, but the second one took me completely by surprise when she asked for pants.

ohlittlepea · 19/08/2018 18:18

Be patient with them and yourself, pressure and stress doesn't help anyone, they will do it once they are ready. 😁

Joffle · 19/08/2018 19:48

My tips would be don't do it too early, try and do it in the summer and if you have twins (like us) have a potty for each child and an unbelievably large number of pants!

walkalongsmiling · 19/08/2018 20:57

Potty train in the warmer months if possible, helps a bit if you can get your washing dry easily!!
