NOW CLOSED

Many of us are becoming more aware of how our gut can affect our overall wellbeing and the importance of taking care of it in order to stay healthy and happy. The majority of us have all been there when bloating and/or indigestion strikes, and this is why Nairn’s would love to hear your tips for maintaining good gut health.

Here is what Nairn’s have to say: “We’d like to think we know a thing or two about the superfood that is oats – we’ve been baking with them for over 100 years. We know how good oats are for your gut and we know that gut health as a topic is no flash in the pan either!

Oats are one of the foods that can help keep our gut healthy. They’re high in gentle fibre, which not only helps us stay regular, but also ‘feeds’ the friendly bacteria in the gut and helps keep the gut lining healthy. Oatcakes in particular can also be a good alternative to wheat-based products such as cereals and breads to keep our gut happy, as wheat can trigger digestive problems for some. The topic itself can be a bit daunting to the less familiar, so it makes sense for us to work with some lovely experts to help us spread that Good Gut Feeling in a simple, accessible, achievable way. Our website covers a number of Good Gut Health areas including The Family, Fitness and Managing a Free From Diet so do drop by and check them out. In the meantime, don’t be shy, and please share your own tips and tricks – they’ll really help others, and we can’t wait to hear them.”

What are your go-to and no-go foods and drinks when it comes to maintaining a healthy gut? How have you been eating oats outside of your morning porridge? If you already eat oatcakes, how do you eat yours? How do you encourage your family to follow in your footsteps? Did you find you had any digestive problems when you were/are pregnant and how did you deal with this? Or maybe you noticed some surprising benefits to keeping your gut health in check (e.g. a new-found spring in your step or blemish-free skin)?

Whatever your advice for maintaining a healthy gut, share your experiences on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list) and a bumper box of Nairn’s Oatcakes.

Thanks and good luck

I eat porridge with a bit of cinnamon. I have smoothies with a bit of spirulina powder. And lastly, I drink hot water with lemon

Blainalass · 29/05/2018 13:12

Being boringly sensible - varied diet with plenty of different veg, avoiding an excess of the 'baddies'.

phillie1 · 29/05/2018 13:46

Varied diet with plenty of fruit and veg

jen1984j · 29/05/2018 13:58

I use alot of lactose free products and limit my bread

kamaxtra · 29/05/2018 15:14

I start every day with lemon water and a small teaspoon of organic honey. I reduce sugar intake (don't even have any in the house!) and try to eat lots of fresh vegetables every day.

Abominus · 29/05/2018 15:55

I eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, porridge for breakfast, take barley grass powder in a drink and i use a turmeric supplement. I also put chillies in or on everything, not really sure if that's a help or hindrance though.

helly27 · 29/05/2018 16:08

I just make sure I have an all rounded healthy diet

Rachdayan · 29/05/2018 18:45

I'm a big fan of smoothies, full of fresh fruit. Sometimes made with oats and milk or even a few greens.

veegstez · 29/05/2018 20:00

I just try to eat a health, plant based diet - lots of fresh fruit and veg, pulses, grains etc and also keep hydrated. I do indulge in treats too, but my guts are much happier when I limit bread and processed food and keep my meals fresh and natural as much as I can!

liz1970 · 29/05/2018 20:16

halcyondays · 29/05/2018 21:48

porridge for breakfast most days, and limit wheat, so would have oatcakes instead of bread a lot of the time. Probiotics

mrpeterhall · 29/05/2018 22:28

We all eat our 5 a day, and drink lots of water. Otherwise, we cook from scratch and avoid as far as possible any processed food.

Cailin7 · 29/05/2018 22:37

We just try to eat balanced home cooked meals. We eat lots of fruit and veg and porridge most days.

EmilyK83 · 30/05/2018 09:41

For me, it's making sure I eat plenty of fibre (mainly in fruit and veg, plus oats), and drinking loads of water...without water to wash it down, it has the opposite effect...!

BL0SS0M · 30/05/2018 10:46

I have lemon in hot water in the morning! I'm vegetarian so eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg and veggie protein such as tofu and lentils and stay away from wheat and gluten! love the nairns gluten free oat cakes as a snack!

laurac1987 · 30/05/2018 10:57

I exercise around 4 times a week as this really helps to de-bloat me, try not to eat too many carbs and take probiotics with my lunch everyday.

strawberrisc · 30/05/2018 15:19

I love probiotics and luckily I like the taste of Sauerkraut and eat it at least twice a day.

mayhew · 30/05/2018 15:33

Love porridge in the morning. Rolled oats, water in a deep bowl. 4 mins in the microwave, add milk, perfect! No pan to wash.
Nairns oat cakes are perfect for work lunch. The little packets are easy to carry and I munch them with an apple and a chunk of cheddar.
Veg heavy dinner, with only a little or without any meat or fish, lots of curries, pasta sauces, stir fries and salads.
All keep our guts, and ourselves well nourished and feeling well.

thornyhousewife · 30/05/2018 16:03

Oatcakes with cheddar cheese is our go-to comfort food in this house.

Plus lots of water and big chunks of cucumber to snack on.

Nottheshrinkingcapgrandpa · 30/05/2018 17:42

I try to have as little sugar as possible through the week and cut out bread

Liwwybettykins · 30/05/2018 19:46

A daily dose of fortified yoghurt

badgermum · 30/05/2018 19:47

Since having my gallbladder out my 'guts' have never felt better, I try to have plenty of water and fresh fruit and veg and find I have more energy when i do

Minnibix · 30/05/2018 21:15

I tend not to eat bread as this bloats me, but I do like breakfast with baked oats or just porridge
