For many of us, dogs are part of the family. Choosing the right food for them can feel really important – but with so much choice, how do you know what’s right for your dog? Share your experiences of finding the right food for your dog, and be in with a chance of winning a £300 voucher for a store of your choice.

To get us started, here’s what Sean, the Head Vet at tails.com, has to say: “From raw feeding to grain free, we are seeing more human diet trends crossing over into the world of dog food. While trends come and go, I believe in three founding principles of a good diet to improve and extend your dog's life. High quality ingredients, tailored to your dog's individual needs, and fed in the right amount to keep them in great physical shape. The question is how do you find the food that meets all three principles?”

What do you prioritise when it comes to choosing food for your dog? How can you tell if the food you’re giving your dog is beneficial to their health and general condition? Do you have feeding tips that you’d like to share with new dog owners? If your dog has ever gone off their food, how have you encouraged them to start eating again? And if you’re thinking of getting a dog, what do you think you’d feed one - would you buy generic dog food or would you think more deeply about their diet?

Everyone who posts on the thread below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice.

Tails.com have supplied a 1 month free discount code - if you'd like to use this please click here.

Thanks and good luck!

I don't even try anymore I go with the flow,, my dog will go mad for something for a week and then when I have stacked all the cupboards, because he likes it, he will then refuse to touch it !!!! Sometimes I will mix one of the brands that he has "Gone off" with a little home made gravy and chicken, it is better than having cupboards full of dog food :D

Marg2k8 · 16/04/2018 18:49

I went by the vet's recommendation.

badgermum · 16/04/2018 19:03

Our Holly has Iams ProActive Health Dog Adult Chicken as it's the only food she'll always eat

Sid98 · 16/04/2018 19:38

I dont have a dog

frances93 · 16/04/2018 19:50

I have 3 dogs, one has a cast iron stomach the other 2 are super sensitive and i have to be extremely careful what they eat otherwise its a poo-nami. It has taken a good year to find the right balance of food and surprisingly its not the best quality food, asda hero mixer and there own brand tins.

sheilads105 · 16/04/2018 19:51

I used the brand recommended by the breeder. It worked for her and for us too.

kittykomp · 16/04/2018 19:57

my dog is on a raw diet

sarah861421 · 16/04/2018 20:04

I have a labrador. the only food he has ever refused is sprouts. I usually buy 15kg bags from a supermarket as cheap as possible and he is very healthy

laurac1987 · 16/04/2018 20:05

Our dog eats food based on what our vet recommends,. I hope that the brand they stock and sell is decent and provides my dog with all the nutrients she needs.

pennwood · 16/04/2018 20:09

When purchasing a puppy I go with what the breeder recommends feeding them on as it is disruptive to change their food without weaning them on to it. Tails sounds very good as tailored to a dogs needs and taste.

freefan · 16/04/2018 20:23

I have two dogs and their diets have been changed as they have aged,as puppies they were able to eat any brand of wet and dry food, but as they have aged they have developed allergies and are now on hypo-allergenic food which is a lot better on their tummies and has reduced their wind haha added bonus

princesssmithee · 16/04/2018 20:38

we asked the pet shop :)

twinklenic · 16/04/2018 20:45

We have 2 dogs, a whippet and a cross terrier. We got them a day apart as puppies and they are now 8 years old. We tried them on a few different foods at first, both seemed to like the tiny dogs complete food mixed with some wet food. we do sometimes change them so they dont get bored. They are both pretty good and will eat most food.We look for quality ingredients and age specific food

towser44 · 16/04/2018 20:46

Advice from the charity we got her from, which was a Raw Diet.

spottypjs · 16/04/2018 21:02

Always dry food for our dogs. Personally, the tinned stuff smells way worse than the dried stuff. We have to have hypo allergenic as they have allergies (I'm not convinced it helps) but the vet recommended it.

Lisapaige24 · 16/04/2018 21:02

I read what is best for each breed of my dogs and I feed the according to the advice as I have a small dog and a large dog so I have to make sure am not over feeding the small dog and not under feeding the large dog they both have meat and dry mix combination but different brands

buckley1983 · 16/04/2018 21:31

Our dog has a mixture of James Wellbeloved dry food & pouches. He seems to prefer this to other brands we have tried & it came recommended by a friend who is a lifelong dog owner!

jandoc · 16/04/2018 21:47

we try and mix it up with dried food and some treats too

Chrisboswell9281 · 16/04/2018 21:54

Our dog has many allergies and as such what we choose for him is very limited. It is usually on vets recommendation and purchased from them. And yes, it is much more expensive, but we'd do anything for our cherished pets.

lhlee62 · 16/04/2018 22:01

We got advice from the dog pound where we got her from, we gave her a mix of wet and dry

liz1970 · 16/04/2018 22:15

My dog is grain free, we also feed her a dry food diet. We were advised from the vet to which food :)

juju3 · 16/04/2018 22:40

Advice from our local pet shop

patchysmum · 17/04/2018 01:27

I researched brands for the best nutritional value that i could afford.I then tried a small amount at first to make sure it agreed with my dog

danigrace · 17/04/2018 07:17

We choose James Wellbeloved as it's healthy balanced and tasty but not as pricy as some of it's rivals like science plan

cluckyhen · 17/04/2018 09:22

Ours has always been on butchers - we just kept her on what she was used to
