Mumsnet users share with Sainsbury's what would get their children up and active

We all know it’s hard to get our children to keep active, especially during the holidays when sitting inside watching TV and playing computer games seem like the more appealing options. Sainsbury’s wants to get to the bottom of this and understand what barriers parents face during the summer holidays in getting your DCs active and in an ideal world what would it take to help you to get them up and about?

Sainsbury’s says: “We want to understand what challenges you and your family face when keeping active in the holidays. We know there are plenty of reasons, but we’re particularly keen to identify the types of support that would help your kids to get active. Do you want to send your children to a local sports camp, but there isn’t one nearby? Or would you like to see more frequent family park runs happening in your local community? Whatever would help your kids to get up on their feet this summer, we want to know!”

Let us know the barriers you face and any suggestions you have to get your children active on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Sainsbury’s voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

If it's dry, my kids will play football all day!

some decent weather

They love to get out on the beach and playing in rock pools. Go Ape and theme parks are great for them too. Limiting computer and TV time helps too

Mine are older now but we always used to pack up a picnic and take some garden games with us when the weather was good to a park. Seemed to do the trick with tiring them out!

We are within walking reach of some good parks. Our local one had the play area refurbished and the children love it. It’s all down to the weather. On a rainy day we have resorted to small bats and balloons to play tennis indoors.

I have found that there is a lack of toddler activities in our area. Loads for babies or 4yrs + to do but not much for 2/3 year old

Mine is no car! So woods have to be close by a train and buses are so dear here! Expense as well. But mine just loves being outdoors and making camps.

We work with other families and have a rota so there is usually something going on. Even if it's in someones garden it's outdoors.

Taking the dog for a walk is always a good way :)

Having a great reason to leave the house, such as meeting up with friends in the park or the Lido, or going somewhere to see animals.

Lauzipop1 · 27/03/2018 17:24

Definitely the promise of a trip to the park keeps the kids active and they love just running round when they get there.

They also love to dance so if the weather is pretty rubbish they're constantly making up dances to their favourite songs so that keeps them on the go too.

The best thing I always did for my children and now Grandson at summer and practically free was to take a picnic to the park, take lots to play with, if it rains then have a picnic at home and just put on wellies. I don't see why so many parents feel the need to go to expensive play centres.

Flickabella36 · 27/03/2018 21:32

My children love treasure hunts! You could make them as small (in the house) medium ( the garden) or the local area if you were feeling very inspired! This gets them moving and using their brain!

Jesswoods1992 · 27/03/2018 23:38

Getting the garden sorted with lots of different activities to do we love to go for walks up our local woods and if its sunny the WiFi gets turned off until 6pm to stop them having that temptation of just staying indoors on the ipad
