The rules on laundry and what to do with mixing colours and fabrics can sometimes get a bit confusing with different people saying different things. Therefore Fairy Non Bio would like to know what your tips and tricks are when it comes to mixing colours and fabrics?

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio have to say: “Everyone’s got their own way of doing things. We design our products so that you can get the most out of every load but would love to know how you divide and conquer your washing and what you use for it!”

Do you find that once colours have been washed once you can mix them with the lighter colours? Are there certain fabrics that you know can be easily washed together? Or have you figured out a laundry system that means your dark colours no longer bleed into lighter clothes? Maybe you’ve had a laundry disaster that forced you to change how you did things?

Whatever your tips are, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

I am always careful about washing things together, I divide into several categories (jeans, dark colours, light colours, blacks, whites/lights at 60° and whites/lights at 30°) and for the ones that have a mix of different colours I use colour catcher sheets.

Chelsea26 · 12/02/2018 12:18

I have very low standards so just bung everything in together on the quickest wash - works so far!

Shesawinner1989 · 12/02/2018 13:29

Do not mix colours. Always do separate washes. Always best to be safe than sorry.

jen1984j · 12/02/2018 13:58

I have 2 seperate baskets for colours and whites so they dont get mixed up

libra101 · 12/02/2018 14:01

I separate lighter items of laundry from darker/more heavily stained items, and wash on their own, otherwise white t shirts, underwear etc tends to turn a dull horrible grey.

If I don't have a full washing machine load of darker items, I sometimes place jumpers, shirts within lighter washing load, although denims are always washed with other dark clothing.

Most laundry is washed at 40 degrees on a quick wash, unless heavily stained, then I do a full-length wash.

I always divide my wash into 3 piles, whites (longer warmer wash) coloureds warm wash and colour catcher, darks like socks & jeans warm no colour catcher. If I wash anything with the whites I always get greyish whites even if I use a colour catcher.

Whites, bright colours, pale colours, darks :)

I tend to do a light coloured was on Tuesdays and anything that's dark has to wait until Thursday, Saturday is the exception for emergency washing in which case all the rules go out of the window

JayJay1874 · 13/02/2018 01:48

A lower temperature helps and it's better for the environment and your leccy bills. Less chance of bleed.

I normally take extra care with an item's first wash - definitely keeping it with similar colours then but after that it can be a bit of a free for all.

We don't tend to have enough whites for a white wash - so it's a light (and light-ish) wash and a dark wash in our house.

I get confused with the wording on the labels. 'Wash dark colours separately' - on a grey tshirt. What are you telling me here? Are you telling me this is dark and should be washed separately or are you telling me this is light and i should keep it away from dark colours? Still confused about that.

Whites with whites
All colours together, none of this dark and light mess!
Wash at 30/40 seems to be helping with colour lasting

WishUponAStar88 · 13/02/2018 07:43

I just throw everything in together Blush with the exception of things like new jeans. I’ve never had anything run and often wash at 60. I can’t think of anything plain white that we own between us all though.

snare · 13/02/2018 09:30

I have a white load and darks. Towels and sheets I do at a higher temperature

itsali · 13/02/2018 13:02

I separate into white, mid-colours and darks. I can't stand it when anyone puts colours in with my whites. Darks are washed on 30 degrees. No tips, just my way of doing things.

katieskatie82 · 13/02/2018 13:22

i never mix dark colours and whites. I always do separate washes

angiehoggett · 13/02/2018 14:25

I wash the very dark clothing seperately and everything else apart from jeans go in together. Washing at a love temp seems to help.

avery64 · 13/02/2018 15:21

I just sort into whites and lights or darks and wash on a low temperature as most things are changed daily and just need freshening rather than deep cleaning. Bedding/towels being the exception getting a hot wash. I also give some thought into the sort of fabric and care required when buying in the first place thus avoiding piles of ironing!!!!!! Smile

plavender · 13/02/2018 18:35

Almost everything you can buy these days is colour-fast so I'm afraid I chuck everything in together, wash at 30, and trust to luck! The only exception would be a new pair of jeans - denim is notorious for leaking colour for the first wash!

cmcgeow · 13/02/2018 19:15

cold water always and regular wash!

laurapotz · 13/02/2018 20:35

I just tend to bung everything in together. So far I haven't had any major disasters!

sofieellis · 13/02/2018 21:10

I do separate washes for whites, pastels and darks. I also do some items on their own eg a tie dyed t-shirt that isn't colour fast.

PhilTB54 · 13/02/2018 21:12

Chuck it all in on cool wash .

maria08k · 13/02/2018 21:23

I wash in two separate piles, darks/colours and lights/whites. I have been known to use a colour catcher cloth in the wash too if i need to washing something slightly darker with the lights. They actually work very well!

200thousand · 13/02/2018 21:34

new very dark things go in separately for the first few washes. after that they can go in with mixed colours, then all whites separately always.

angela121262 · 13/02/2018 21:54

There are no tricks separate whites darks and lights , no problems!

baconbap · 13/02/2018 21:56

I just generally shove everything in together, though I have had some cream things come out pink.
