The rules on laundry and what to do with mixing colours and fabrics can sometimes get a bit confusing with different people saying different things. Therefore Fairy Non Bio would like to know what your tips and tricks are when it comes to mixing colours and fabrics?

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio have to say: “Everyone’s got their own way of doing things. We design our products so that you can get the most out of every load but would love to know how you divide and conquer your washing and what you use for it!”

Do you find that once colours have been washed once you can mix them with the lighter colours? Are there certain fabrics that you know can be easily washed together? Or have you figured out a laundry system that means your dark colours no longer bleed into lighter clothes? Maybe you’ve had a laundry disaster that forced you to change how you did things?

Whatever your tips are, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

Separate colours and whites! don't risk it.

MrRichTea · 01/02/2018 15:48

lower temperature & colour catchers! :)

Mummy2one2016 · 01/02/2018 19:23

I'm exactly the same on planes alfiebear total agony in landing I do wonder if I just have very sensitive ears

Brandypie · 01/02/2018 20:47

I tend to wash whites separately and bung a mix of colours in together, the fabrics usually kept separate being towels/bedding/heavy clothing or delicates really.
I only tentatively wash bright/bold colours on their own if they are new items (first wash!).

allthingsred · 02/02/2018 06:39

Whites & lights together.
Very darks go in together
Theñ everything else

Bellroyd · 02/02/2018 07:09

Most of us have ruined clothes with colour bleed. Why even take the risk? Keep them separate!

whataconundrum · 02/02/2018 07:51

I always wash at 30 with a colour catcher which seems to do the trick!!

NambiBambi · 02/02/2018 11:08

My best tip is to check and double check the washing machine drum before you out in a new load. I have been caught out several times by a black sock lurking in the shadows and ending up merrily going around with white work shirts!
My dd' s white school t-shirts all have black embroidery or print on so I have just had to put up with that!

AVT5 · 02/02/2018 13:17

I wash everything together! at 40c.. never had an issue!!

Iggity · 02/02/2018 18:44

Wash everything at 40.
I wash whites with very pale colours as don't have many whites and not very environmentally friendly to put on a small load of whites.

Alexandra87 · 02/02/2018 20:34

I use colour catchers

Gill81uk · 02/02/2018 20:35

I literally just split darks, colours, and very lights/whites. I usually wash adult clothes and children's clothes separately, because most of the children's can go in the tumbledryer afterwards. I have never had a problem with colours bleeding or transferring.

StickChildNumberTwo · 02/02/2018 21:36

The only thing I consistently separate are nappies - they get washed at 60. Everything else goes in at 40 (I tried 30 to be more environmentally friendly but found things weren't clean), all mixed up. If I'm washing something that might run (e.g. new jeans) I stick a colour catcher in. If there's anything particularly precious and light coloured I'll double check everything with it is stuff I've washed before and am confident won't run. But I generally go for as little effort as possible.

doleritedinosaur · 02/02/2018 22:48

I wash all denim together on a 30 degree wash with similar colours and no stained fabrics and usually OH's jumpers so they don't shrink.

I have colour catchers which help pick up colours but I tend to do darks together, colours together and whites together.

I find keep brights and darks separate helps keep all their colours and no dullness.

michael888 · 03/02/2018 02:38

I always separate my colours and whites, and do most of my washes on a low setting.

GloGirl · 03/02/2018 11:45

I wash at a lower temperature, and anything new if I'm unsure if it will bleed gets washed on it's own or with similar colours and I throw a colour catcher into to the wash. Once it's been washed a few times I risk washing everything together. I normally wash everything at 40 but wash jeans separately. All kids clothes gets bundled in on a 60 wash (once I can trust they've stopped running)

Flapdoodles · 03/02/2018 11:59

I do whites with whites, pinks with pinks, darks together etc but mixed white/colour items I put in together and just hope for the best. I tend to wash on a low temperature to reduce the risk of colour runs.

Ruth361 · 03/02/2018 12:25

use a colour catcher

GetSchwifty · 03/02/2018 14:43

I put whites and anything that is very pale in together, everything else I consider to be darks.

TheKnackeredChef · 04/02/2018 09:01

I fish out anything which is white or very light coloured and just hung everything through together at 30. I do now double check for stray yellow dusters after losing my favourite white dressing gown to a disaster with one stuffed in its pocket.

WutheringFrights · 04/02/2018 10:46

Doing the laundry so badly that DH took over.....forever!!!!

IceBearRocks · 04/02/2018 11:38

We wash everything at 40 and have a colour, white and red/pink wash.
We've never had any problems ....my kids have ehlers danlos which means they have fragile skin...we can only use fairy non bio liquid tabs and fabric conditioner.

Snog · 04/02/2018 13:09

Make sure that when your teenagers buy cheap clothes they go in low risk washes until you have worked out how colour fast they are

cocochips · 04/02/2018 15:05

I always use a colour catcher. I wash most fabrics together except for wool and cashmere- these are always washed separately.

CoffeeOrSleep · 04/02/2018 16:22

Wash brightly coloured things alone or with much darker things for the first time, then separate light and dark, but not overly fussed about white only loads.

Bedding and towels all go in together at 60 (I don't buy dark coloured bedding or towels anyway), everything else is 40 or 30 for delicates.
