It’s a common worry that our DC don’t spend enough time outside, especially with teens glued to their phones and toddlers insisting on watching their favourite movie for the 1000th time. Homebase would like to find out how you will encourage your DC to get out in the garden this summer.

Here’s what Homebase has to say: "No matter how big or small your garden is, you want to create a haven that can be enjoyed by your family all year round, especially in the summer months. You don't have to be a professional gardener to plan your own landscape, which is why we have put together useful advice guides and top tips containing plenty of garden ideas to give you the inspiration you need to begin.”

So how will you get your DC in the garden this summer? Will you get them to help you plant fruit and veg so they can get excited watching them grow? Perhaps you’d like to recreate activities you did in the garden when you were a child? If it rains will you be determined to stay outside and play games in a shelter or craft decorations that can be put in the garden when it’s dry again?

Whether you want to create a play haven by building a mini playground or make the perfect space for eating alfresco please post your ideas and plans below and you will be entered into the prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Homebase voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

We love growing veg together in one area, but then just keep a big patch of lawn to play on!
It's good to keep an area basic so you can setup a range of activities from paddling pools to board games on a blanket.

We are adding a lawn to our garden at the moment and making lots of changes to it, so my DS is going tomoove going out there and helping with the gardening all summer - one of his favourite things to do.

My daughter loves being in the garden, we have a swing and hammock there, during warm days we will up a pool and she would stay there for hours :-)

The home so just he garden is an extension of the home so we just open the door and enjoy.

It's all about homemade ice lollies in the garden here!

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/06/2017 19:49

Easy peasy. It's either competitive bean, pea, cucumber and strawberry growing or the water slide/paddling pool. Or bubbles if it's cloudy.

Alternatively if I take a book out to lie in my hammock all the buggers from my house appear to make as much noise as possible Angry

We took up our scrubby, lumpy, patchy grass a few weekends ago and are going to be laying some turf and putting a temporary fence along the driveway to keep our small children safe outside. We can't use the garden at the moment but I'm so excited about getting out there this summer. We're going to have a flower bed along our fence with lavender plants, a big sandpit for diggers and trucks, slides, cars, bubbles, balls, and natural thing she like sticks, pine cones, stones and other bits we find when out on our nature walks.

when the sun is out we always have our meals in the garden. That gets them out, otherwise no dinner :P

Have to be a paddling pool for the grandson. He love water play.

Allhallowseve · 13/06/2017 06:47

My 2yr old loves being outside and because of this me and my dh have found a new love for gardening so we can make the best of our outdoor space.
It is like having an extra room in the summer for us. We only have a small garden but he has a play house slide and sand pit.
We are attempting to grow some herbs to use in our cooking and we planted these together . My ds also loves to water the garden.
He loves to dig holes to plant things in and find worms etc. His love of the outdoors has rubbed off on me!

mumpetuk1 · 13/06/2017 08:34

Our garden is lots of fun with swings, slides and a pool so I have no problem getting them out of the garden.

Sammyislost · 13/06/2017 09:55

I've just bought a badminton set with a pop up net, and an archery set that looks cool too! hope the kids will let me play too!

AutumnElla · 13/06/2017 13:23

I go outside with my children. Even while they're just playing among themselves they play outside for longer if I'm there. We also have our lunch outside too, it's nice to enjoy the sun together and less mess to clean up.

In the summer it is easy to get the kids out in the garden, as they like fruit and we have plenty in the garden (well, in the allotment). If we want them to help with chores, we'll try to get them to do the chores we know they like. So my daugther will cut the grass in the edges and my son will plant something or mow the lawn.

We've been taking part in 30 Days Wild, painting pots and planting seeds

Headfullofdreams · 13/06/2017 16:47

Just switch off the wifi and hide all remotes and PS4 controllers!

AngelBlue12 · 13/06/2017 19:10

This year we are adding a sandpit and a bbq/picnic area. We already have a trampoline, swings, monkey bars and a large slide - our children love being in the garden.

bugzie92 · 13/06/2017 19:31

My son loves being outside in the garden! its a bit of nightmare as I live in a maisonette, so my garden is behind downstairs garden... so not quite straightforward as I would desire! however we have slides etc in our garden and it is definitely my DS's favourite place to be! We will be moving soon, and having an easy access garden is our priority this time! I would love to grow fruit and veg with my DS, he would love it.

My daughter loves to paint so I gave her some plant pits and some paint and she has created amazing plant pots that are unique to us and brighten up the garden

annmariec · 13/06/2017 21:45

We spend as much time as we can in the garden we have a veg patch and a flower bed especially for my son he loves watching things grow then cooking them and eating them , we also play a lot of games we make mud pies little homes for the bugs and make nests for the birds

lastkisstoo · 13/06/2017 22:23

We have a concrete area with a wooden fence, so limited for green-fingered activities.

Our plan for this summer is to erect an arch outside of the livingroom window, and plant climbers in pots at the base so they grow up and round.....giving us a nicer view of the outdoors.

We also plan on painting the fence and gate a lovely fresh blue shade, and as we live at the beach bring some driftwood up for decoration.

Sleepysausage · 13/06/2017 22:32

We've bought our DD a play house which is near to the back door meaning if it's been raining she doesn't have to go across the wet lawn to play.

Stephgr8 · 14/06/2017 01:13

I will unplug all the electronic items they like including the TV and put all their favourite toys in the garden. I will make sure I join them as much as possible and I'll lock the back door!

flapjack35 · 14/06/2017 02:34

I have no problems getting my DD out into the fresh air, she loves the great outdoors, it doesn't matter whether she's helping in the garden or just playing x

snare · 14/06/2017 06:35

My kids love playing outside. We put the paddling pool up on hot days but also have trampoline and climbing frame. They also love to help with the gardening :)
