Many of us look back longingly at our Mums’ home cooking but, with full-time jobs and busy lifestyles not to mention that take-away restaurant just around the corner it can be hard to get your own cooking up to her standards. That’s why Tefal want to know about the best things your Mum used to make for you on weeknights - that you wish you had the skills, confidence and time to cook for your family.

Here’s what Tefal have to say: ‘You don’t need to be a masterchef to achieve delicious meals in no time! Tefal have innovated again, and now give you Cook4Me.

Cook4Me is a one-pot digital cooker, ideal for mums looking to make fast and fresh meals. It is easy to use and intuitive: Cook4Me comes with 50 built-in recipes, and features a digital screen with guided cooking steps. Cook4Me cooks under pressure, which means you will save a lot of time. For example, after browning and pre-heating, it cooks a Chicken Tikka Masala in 3 minutes, a Thai Green Chicken curry in 4 minutes and a Risotto in 9 minutes (and no need to stir!)… It is the ideal all-in-one cooker, with up to 6 cooking manual modes: not only does it pressure cook, but it also steams, browns, simmers, gentle-cooks and automatically keeps your food warm. Its dishwasher-safe bowl can feed 6 people, perfect for the whole family or for batch-cooking.

Cook4Me comes in a standard version, with 50 built-in recipes, and in a Connected version, that works with My Cook4Me app, giving access to over 100 recipes.

You can use this link to purchase a Cook4Me of your own, at a fantastic 50% off retail price.’

Whether it’s a signature risotto, a flavoursome curry or the classic chili con carne, post on the thread below your Mum’s best dishes that you wish you could replicate. Everyone who posts will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will be randomly selected to win a Cook4Me.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw.

My mum did lots of suet puddings and lovely fattening things we never eat now. Chocolate pud & chocolate custard was one of my favorites. she also makes a great shepherds pie and lemon meringue pie.

I really liked her scalloped potatoes.

amusedbush · 15/05/2017 14:31

My mum didn't get home from work until 6ish and dad worked the early shift so he was the cook in our house.

He does a fantastic curry, either chicken or veg. He also makes brilliant macaroni cheese. I'm in my late 20's and he still gives me the odd tupperware of cheese sauce to freeze and add to pasta as I fancy Grin

FawnDrench · 15/05/2017 15:32

My mum made the most wonderful soda bread and potato cakes (she was Irish) and I have been unable to replicate either of these two tasty foods as successfully.
I don't know if it was the way she made them, the fact she never used a recipe or what.

I really miss those two lovely dishes, and everything else she cooked so effortlessly...

My mum used to make a fantastic Toad in the Hole. The batter was crispy on the outside with just the right amount of soft squidgyness on the inside. Despite using her recipe I am unable to recreate this treat! Another one of her delights was a sweet suet pudding for dessert - I do not own a steamer and have never tried to make this but the memories of arguing about who was going to get the crispy end piece are fond.

Chicken soup with sunday roast leftovers. Coming home from school on a Monday was always massively looked forward to as we knew there would be an enormous pot of chicken soup with loads of veges in it. The ultimate comfort food!

Elliepurpleflower · 15/05/2017 15:49

My mums stew with dumplings.... the dumplings were so good, crispy on the top and fluffy inside. Amazing on a chilly day!!

nemno · 15/05/2017 15:53

My mum was a fabulous cook and an even better baker. I wasn't keen on meat or fish but dad was a meat and potatoes man , so if he was away she would make me the most fabulous Reibekuchen (potato pancake a bit like rosti), fruit pancakes or soup, my favourite being pea and ham, made with dried peas and stock that included pig trotters which made it richly savoury. I still make the soup as it is a favourite of my children and their OHs, I can't make the other dishes to the same standard :( As you've guessed she was not from round these parts.

My mum couldn't cook very much but was from Wales and I remember the most amazing Welsh cakes.

katiewalters · 15/05/2017 16:03

my mom used to do us chicken and dumpling stew, it was so good. She would leave it to slow cook. We could smell it cooking and couldnt wait until it was ready.

This thread should have a trigger warning. It's bought back floods of sadness. My SM used to make something with cabbage which was surprisingly delicious. I've asked her time and time again what it was, but she denies all knowledge of anything cabbage-y.
This thread has bought back all the frustration. Sad

But apart from the cabbage thing, she used to make a delicious goulash that she served with boiled potatoes which absorbed all the sauce and were amazing. Yum.

deathb4decaf · 15/05/2017 16:40

Bubble and squeak, curries and soups made with Sunday's leftovers. Lots of stuff tastes better second time around! She also used to make a warm Cajun chicken salad with loads of peppers and mushrooms. That was delicious!

thekiwibex · 15/05/2017 16:40

Her roast pork with crackling!

kazlau · 15/05/2017 16:56

My mum's lentil soup. No matter how I try mine never tastes the same. I've even resorted to grating the onions the same as she did and using smoked ribs nig I just can't get it the same. I miss her soup loads.

FionaJade · 15/05/2017 17:24

My mum used to make a lot of mince based meals, like spaghetti bolognase, cottage pie or lasagne but I reali used to love her roast dinners and she also made an amazing quiche, I have her recipe but mine never turn out like hers do

JugglingFromHereToThere · 15/05/2017 18:19

Chicken tarragon, chicken in a creamy tarragon sauce with rice and peas
Faggots and mash
Duck a l'orange

We're vegetarian now though! My children's favourite is nut loaf with roast potatoes and roast parsnips and cauliflower cheese which we do on Christmas day. Lots of roasties!

angieloumc · 15/05/2017 18:38

My mum was an amazing cook; now she lives alone I cook for her a couple of times a week.
I'm nearly 50 now so most of my childhood means were right from scratch; her casseroles and roasts were amazing. My favourite thing though was her mince curry and rice. I thought it was amazing! Though she did tell me it was from
a recipe book called something like 101 ways with mince and all it actually consisted of was mince and onions in a tomato based sauce with gravy browning and curry powder!

TroubleInSnowland · 15/05/2017 19:16

Wow, this is tricky. Mum used to make a lot of traditional meals so roast chicken dinner, shepherds pie, sausage and mash, toad in the hole, rice pudding and crumbles. My favourite has to be her chicken on red wine sauce. Mmmm delicious with lots of crusty bread and a bit of salad.

sammylea80 · 15/05/2017 19:20

My mum's stew in a home made giant yorkshire pudding! I always used to run home from school when I knew it was stew day

PocketNiffler · 15/05/2017 19:22

My mum's kedgeree was my favourite meal ever. She was also brilliant at rustling up something tasty out of leftovers in the fridge.

sc00ter · 15/05/2017 20:00

My mom made the best stews, she would put split peas and lentils in to make up for the little meat, oh and home made herb dumplings (which I have tried to replicate but they never taste quite the same).
Also she made a really fab trifle at weekends - which again mine is never as good. Oh well never mind very fond memories. :)

jandoc · 15/05/2017 20:26

mince and tatties

chibsortig · 15/05/2017 20:44

Has to be cornbeef hash and pancakes, loved coming home from school in the winter to steaming bowls of hash and pancakes or yorkshire puddings.

She did have some disasters in the kitchen though like when she bought her first blender, we had some great strawberry milkshakes however leftover sunday dinner, gravy and curry powder blended to make soup was rank.

nerysw · 15/05/2017 21:26

My mum is a great cook and my favourite was roast chicken dinner with her brilliant roast spud. My kids's favourite now is her cottage pie (mine doesn't compare well!).

mamof3boys · 15/05/2017 22:26

My mothers chicken dinner. It's the best
