Whether it’s meeting new friends, amenities for the kids, or clubs and charities, it’s so important to make the most of the community you live in. Co-op want to know what you couldn’t live without where you live. Whether it’s where you are now, or the place that really feels like home, which clubs, activities, or services really make a difference to you in your local area?

Here’s what the Co-op have said: ‘Local community values are so important to us - that’s why we give 1% of everything our members spend on selected Co-op branded products and services from Co-op Group businesses, including food stores and funeral homes, to local initiatives in your community. So far, we’ve paid out £9 million to over 4,000 local causes! You can find out more, and sign up to become a member, here.’

You can read the Co-op’s membership T&Cs here.

Whether it’s a local event that brings everyone together, an after school sports club that gets your DC outdoors and active, or even just the beautiful natural scenery, Co-op want to know what really matters to you locally. So tell them about those local services, amenities or events that you just couldn't live without by posting in the thread below.

Every MNer who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

The library. A kids club. Scouts. Park. Steam railway. Basically anything that keeps my kids entertained for any length of time.

Our local park is fantastic!

Definitely our local library. As well as lending books, it has story sessions for younger children, older children can use the computers for homework and they also run clubs for older people to learn new IT skills. I can't imagine life without it!

feefeegabor · 09/05/2017 20:55

Our village runs a great family fun day in the Park which is hosted once a year and the whole village gets involved. Whether it's showing your dog in the Dog Show or submitting a cake for the competition, there's something for everyone.

Were really lucky because we live in an area that is surrounded by beautiful hills and forest. When it's dry we go for walks and take a picnic. The kids love it. We also visit local wildlife parks that we have an annual pass for, and the kids also enjoy getting out in the garden and planting flowers. We have butterflies to release in a few weeks. As soon as it's stopped raining the kids want to be outside playing. We try and get out as much as we can.

Our park is the heart of the town and I really love that so much goes on there. At the pavilion gardens there are craft and art fairs and lots of other events. There is a brass band on at the band stand often at weekends. There are also bank holiday weekends where local bands play different types of music on the rooftop of a building that is overlooked by a sloping bit of park, so the perfect outdoor arena! Such an amazing community feeling and free entertainment there for everyone to enjoy!

We are lucky to have a small local library just round corner from us, my son loves to reserve books or dvds and pick them up, he will also sit and read to me in the library away from home distractions.

i couldn't do without our local post office and chemist, its really handy having them both so close by

liz1970 · 09/05/2017 21:18

the local park to take my grandchildren to :)

Most important is an active community!

i moved here 9 years ago and was expecting DC1. Once i was lonely on mat leave i found there was something almost every day. It was vital for helping me make lots of local friends.

This village has more going on than the town i left! Amongst the usual toddler groups and music groups there are also film nights at the village hall, exercise classes, a computer club, the WI, the history society, a bowls club etc and a community woodland project!

We have a park nearby where there is a play area, an area where they keep birds, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs and ducks, and a big grassy area with lots of picnic tables, its fab in the summer as the kids can eat snacks and then run off the calories having a good old football game or in the play area.

Funkyferret · 09/05/2017 21:41

We are inner city and there are pockets of problems but we do have a great cycle path that goes for miles, a Co-op round the corner (which always seems to have offers on loo rolls that are better than the supermarket so the staff always give me the heads up!), and it's quite a hippyish area so there's lots of arts events, pop up restaurants and occasionally quite weird and wonderful things going on.

AlwaysOldBeforeMyTime · 09/05/2017 21:50

I love my community. We have a monthly community market where lots of locals sell crafts and food. The school fairs are great and the PTA does a great job of organising garage sales etc.

We also have a nice toddler group and I love spotting the other mums around the village for a quick chat

BL0SS0M · 09/05/2017 21:54

we live just around the corner from a busy street with lots of local shops. Love walking to school and meeting up with people along the way and going to the local library once a week. We've also just got a new play park which is great! and we love our summer fairs.

LeeR1985 · 09/05/2017 22:07

My daughter goes to an after school dance club and has done for a year, she loves it :)

Mummychoochoo3 · 09/05/2017 22:34

Noticeboards with local events. Whether it's in supermarkets, hospitals or the local library. I like knowing what's going on where I live.

ClementineWardrobe · 09/05/2017 22:36

Dog poo bins. We need more!

MrsFrTedCrilly · 09/05/2017 22:48

Our lovely neighbors, we are lucky enough to live in a beautiful part of the world where help is just a doorbell away!

stefalfie11 · 09/05/2017 22:49

It would have to be our local library, the kids love going there on a saturday for book club and they run lots of reading incentive schemes and other activities. It was also a brilliant way to meet other people and other mums when they were first born.

KittyKat88 · 09/05/2017 22:50

Having two young DDs, I got involved in local mums groups and that meant lots of park visits and playdates. One of the school mums I know started a GYO/PYO business selling fresh, organic produce so my DDs and I visit regularly. It's important for my DDs to see how real food is grown and picked and why it's important to shop locally and think about where their food comes from.

sbruin1122 · 09/05/2017 22:52

It would definitely have to be the corner shop

Gerjuice · 09/05/2017 22:58

Our local library is invaluable! I also love the volunteer run part-time cafe, and the playparks as well....oooh and the post-office! We also have a co-op which is super important when I've forgotten a cooking ingredient or milk for breakfast!!

TellMeItsNotTrue · 10/05/2017 00:15

Good neighbours, worth more than their weight in gold

Something you can reliably look for in a new home though would be a park or a public field where DC can run around, play and burn off some energy

Sid98 · 10/05/2017 00:16

Local shops

FlukeSkyeRunner · 10/05/2017 07:02

Out local library. The staff are lovely and friendly. Dd1 is a real book worm so the library saves us a fortune! It is also located next to a nice park and some lovely independent shops so very convenient.
