Have a tried-and-tested trick up your sleeve for DIY hair dying? Well, nice ‘n easy want to hear them! They'd like to know the things you do to get a great colour at home, every time.

Here’s what nice ‘n easy have to say: “To help you achieve your most amazing hair colour, we’d love to share with you some nice tips and tricks. Tip #1 : Apply petroleum jelly to your hairline, it prevents colour from staining your skin (Bonus: Dab a little onto your cuticles to soften them!). Tip #2: When your natural hair colour seems to be a distant memory, use your brows as a guide and stick within two shades lighter or darker for the most natural looking hair colour. Tip #3: when the time is up, just set your TV on record even if that’s your favourite program. Over-processing hair is a common colour mistake that ends in colour not being what you expected! These were only a few of the tips we got up our sleeves. What are yours?”

So - what advice do you have for hair dying newbies? Do you have a top tip for prepping your hair before colouring at home, or choosing the perfect shade for you? How about the best ways to prevent staining your skin, or clothes (or bathroom!) - and things to do to pass the time while the colour is on?

Whatever your tips and tricks are, add your comment below and you'll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop gift voucher.

We’re also on the lookout for 5 Mumsnetters who are willing to film their hair dye tip or trick in action. If you would be happy to do this, please sign up here. Those selected will each receive a £100 voucher. More details will be sent.

thanks

yes to vaseline around the hairline, latex gloves and old towels/pillowcases. I'd also add, avoid shampooing for at least 2 days after a dye job and to keep your colour looking it's best afterwards, make sure to condition hair after every shampoo with an appropriate conditioner, don't wash your hair in water that's too hot and finish with a cold shot if you can stand it!

My key tips are to apply vaseline around your hairline. I make my hands soapy before I put the gloves on. I also have a spare pair of gloves for rinsing my hair. I use crocodile clips for my hair while it's setting. Keeps it out of the way and you can just run them under a tap when you are done.

  • use disposable shower caps from hotel rooms or buy one for covering head when dyed hair (so you can walk around without a drip or towels falling off)

-have a shoulder towel and peg it around your neck

  • use sudocream around the hair line to get no dye / dye comes off easy

-buy skin tight gloves (better than the provided ones in the box)

-get two boxes of colour.

Get someone to check the back of your head that you've covered all the areas and haven't missed a bit. There have been a few times I failed to ask my mum or husband to do a second check and have left parts of the original colour in my hair even though I checked myself with a mirror

Leave your hair unwashed for as long as possible before you dye it. It absorbs colour better. Don't wash too often . Old towels old T shirt old comb and well fitting gloves ( not those in the pack) . I put sellotape or plaster on the edges of my glasses otherwise I can't see where to put the dye!!
