With a bit of luck the festive period left you with LOTS of happy memories - but we all know that Christmas can leave bank accounts looking a little worse for wear. To help you into 2016, Lloyds Bank would like to know the financial new year’s resolutions Mumsnetters are making.

Here's what they say: "January sales, unwanted presents and resolutions - the new year will bring new challenges, but plenty of opportunities for those who are shrewd with their finances. We'd love to hear Mumsnetter's tips for starting the new year in financial style‎." - Lloyds Bank

So how do you make sure your bills stay in the black? Do you make a spending plan to control your budget? Maybe opening a savings account is the best option? Perhaps you give the credit card a well-deserved rest and pay everything upfront? Or do you have some money-saving habits you force yourself to get back into once the festive season is over?

Whatever your tips, Lloyds Bank would love to hear them.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw, and one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks,

I would love to save £7,000 into my house deposit ISA but am realistic so anything over £3,000 would be good - I would also love to get my student loan cleared this year.

Mine is going to go a bit crazy as i am planning to start my own business, however my main points are.
Food budget and stick to it - get creative with leftovers.
Family time - instead of spending money on family days out get crafty at home, play board games etc.
Up cycle and recycle - instead of buying new things and new clothes, make something else with them.
Hopefully these things will keep the money in the pockets and help make my business a success also

It is not a resolution as such, but as always, I will be watching all the pennies.

sweetsomethings · 02/01/2016 19:58

im going to save up a little every week so we can go on our dream holiday next year

mave · 02/01/2016 19:59

I'm pretty sensible with money particularly since having kids. However, we are moving this year and I am tightening our belts by doing cheap days out, cutting back on eating out, shopping in charity shops. I'm also going to review our bills to make sure we're getting the cheapest deal.

Never Spend more money than you have at your disposal and you will never get into debt

Blondiebloo · 02/01/2016 20:03

Spend less, save more. Now if only I could get my wife to listen!

wileyfox · 02/01/2016 20:11

I'm switching to buying food at Aldi and cook everything from scratch.. no more ready meals! I need to half my food bill

catz747 · 02/01/2016 20:20

Spending less money on the kids in terms of rubbish toys and machine junk and encouraging them to save money for better things that they actually want. They have more than enough toys and space in the house taken up by plastic junk.

Roraima · 02/01/2016 20:28

Just to RELAX! Not to worry or anticipate so much SO OFTEN! LET GO!

kldubbleu · 02/01/2016 20:30

I'm going to make sure I don't spend money on things I don't need like toiletries and clothes and use and wear what I have first.

FawcettSA · 02/01/2016 20:40

To the amusement of my friends, I have a spreadsheet with my household budget which shows me what our income and outgoings are and what we need to budget for Christmas, Birthdays and holidays

compy99 · 02/01/2016 20:41

I am going to compare prices and before any considered purchase wait 24 hours to make sure we really need/want it before buying.

bridge16 · 02/01/2016 20:43

We decided to open a savings account for each of the kids and put a small amount away each payday for them. We have never done it before as never seem to have spare at the end of the month but think we can make it work if we put it away before it is spent on something else!

spottypjs · 02/01/2016 20:45

Im going to save as much as I can each money to replenish my savings pot after a rough couple of years working part time.

pennwood · 02/01/2016 20:48

I plan to be financially savvy 2016.
Use Topcashback to enhance purchases at no cost to me.
Use cashback credit card for food shopping/fuel & pay off in full each month.
Change dual fuel supplier for the best price & send them readings monthly to ensue paying correct direct debit monthly.
Shop with Aldi & Lidl for quality at keenest prices.
Keep my account with Lloyds paying a good interest on a current account.

Simey68 · 02/01/2016 20:49

Think it would have to be to stop buying little impulse items and saving a bit more

shivbrown · 02/01/2016 20:57

To not buy Magazines and cans of drink from the shop when i can read the gossip online for free and have a drink at home x

mrpeterhall · 02/01/2016 20:58

Kicking the nicotine habit will save me more than I ever wish to admit

arat · 02/01/2016 20:59

My financial resolution is to pester my OH into drawing up a list of all of our accounts, policies etc and the online systems etc for them. I've been taking the easy option and letting him sort out the finances for far too long!

taz10 · 02/01/2016 21:07

to put any2pound coins in a jar

gamerwidow · 02/01/2016 21:07

I'm resolved to pay off my credit card bill in full by May and then start regular savings. I wiped out my savings last year on a new kitchen and I need to build them up again.

Maclairey · 02/01/2016 21:08

I need to stop spending money unnecessarily. I am back to work soon after maternity leave and will have two in childcare. We also want and need to move house this year so I really need to knuckle down and be more frugal. We already tend to buy things in bulk when there are good offers on things like washing powder and nappies but I also need to reign in the day to day spending. The good thing is that by going back to work I will stop spending so much in Costa!

dandanrawlings · 02/01/2016 21:20

I'm going to switch to cheaper supermarket branded foods and save a little bit in my food bills

juju3 · 02/01/2016 21:24

Not to take "one for the stock cupboard"
