‘Tis the season once again. With Christmas on its way, Homebase is keen to get Mumsnetters’ views on the pros and cons of getting a real or fake tree.

Here’s what they have to say: “The Christmas tree is at the heart of everyone’s Christmas look but where do you stand on the annual dilemma - real or fake? Are you a fan of the fresh pine scent and traditional feel you only get from a real tree? Or do you go for a versatile artificial tree most years? Let us know if you go as far as ‘lights included’ or if your fake tree came already snow-tipped and adorned with berries and cones. Tell us all about your trees from over the years, whether you decide on authentic or artificial this Christmas and any tips you have on caring for real trees.”

So what do you think? Does the authentic smell of a real tree win you over? Or are smaller artificial trees better suited to your home? Do you get your family's much-loved tree out of the loft each year or is it a Christmas tradition to go together and choose one? Does real or fake really matter to you and your family?

Whatever your opinion, Homebase wants to know.

We’ll enter everyone who posts on this thread into a prize draw to win a £300 Homebase voucher.

Thanks and good luck.

Finally, nothing beats the fresh scent of a real Christmas tree. To have the wonderful, reassuring smell of pine with presents and family and all that warmth is a memory that just can’t be faked.

dwerry · 23/11/2015 14:12

Love my fake Christmas tree. We've had it for many years & did spend quite a lot on it, but it still looks gorgeous.

grannybiker · 23/11/2015 14:25

has to be fake- can't be doing with all the needles and the kids love blinging up a fake tree!

Squina1 · 23/11/2015 14:37

Artificial, and we have been reusing the same tree for over 10 years (it's all about recycling!).

Dessallara · 23/11/2015 15:06

We usually have a fake Christmas tree, but I would prefer a real one, because it smells like Christmas from my childhood, but they are so expensive :/

Trisho · 23/11/2015 15:29

With two daft dogs, it's artificial now x

laurapotz · 23/11/2015 15:53

I went for a real one for years but have now converted to artificial. I got a really nice slimline one in a sale and it looks great and takes up much less room. It has saved us money in the long run.

Jenba590 · 23/11/2015 16:04

would love a real one but with 2 wild boys it has to be fake plus it saves money each year

Julie2146 · 23/11/2015 16:24

I've always had fake Christmas trees and really love my fiber optic tree I got last year...no messing about the lights keep going off!

bellaboo194 · 23/11/2015 16:36

Fake and pop up, save any hassle with lights

aussiegeckogirl · 23/11/2015 16:41

real tree for me as I love the smell and it is a tradition

cluckyhen · 23/11/2015 16:44

Fake tree for me - I don't have time to clean after a real one.

Rebecca361 · 23/11/2015 16:59

For me a real one is best. I think it looks nicer in my home.

mercede5 · 23/11/2015 17:26

Real - you cannot beat the smell

steveyh · 23/11/2015 17:35

Definitely a real one. Can't beat the smell and look. As long as it's responsibly sourced and you recycle it afterwards (most councils have collection points or will collect them) then there is no guilt!

Magnificunt · 23/11/2015 17:40

I'd love a real one I've never had one.this year I was gonna get one but we've just had a new carpet in the living room and I'm scared it'll drop sap on it.
So it's a fake again this year

zbody1 · 23/11/2015 18:07

Fake, just for the practicality at the moment . The flat is a bit full and we know where the tree goes and how to put it up .

We used to have a real tree , mainly because my mum and dad , also Nan hated real trees shedding . I do love (and miss) the smell of real trees .

lorrainej162 · 23/11/2015 18:10

I love the smell of a real tree, but we now have a very realistic fake tree which looks great and we bring out every year, and we don't have the needles to deal with afterwards!

Jezzamk · 23/11/2015 18:12

Fake. Some of them look quite good and is a lot less hassle. No needles to vacuum up every day

vixxx666 · 23/11/2015 18:17

Artificial. Lasts for years and you haven't got bits falling off every time the kids touch it!

knitnut24 · 23/11/2015 18:33

fake. much less hassle.

handbar · 23/11/2015 18:38

I will be buying an artificial tree this year as one will be easier for me to manage. I do love real trees in other people's houses but think some artificial ones are nearly as good now. They can look very realistic.

mamma2laura · 23/11/2015 19:07

Fake, I'd really love a real one though, I keep saying next year, next year, but never get round to it!

badgermum · 23/11/2015 19:11

We alwasy had our faithfull artifical 6ft tree up to three years ago when my husband brought a real one on a spur of the moment shopping trip and now we are converted 'real tree' lovers. The feel the smell and the looks of them is just so christmassy and as long as you keep the water topped up they last right through until it's time for the decorations to come down

smit23 · 23/11/2015 19:22

I prefer real, and we always used to have one, unfortunately this year it'll be fake!
