Lidl have asked us to find out Mumsnetters' favourite family-friendly recipes.

They'd like to see what great family-friendly recipes Mumsnetters can come up with when faced with an ingredients challenge. Smile

Maybe you rate yourself as the best baker never to have appeared on GBBO, or perhaps your pasta sauces or casseroles are the stuff of local legend?

We'd like you to choose from one of two baskets of ingredients - sweet or savoury - all of which are available at Lidl, and then come up with a recipe you'd make using all (or most) of the ingredients in that basket.

You can add in any normal store cupboard staples too (within reason).

Sweet basket - Apples, Chocolate, Butter, Pastry, Eggs, Double cream

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream

Everyone who posts their recipe on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where 5 Mumsnetters will each win a £50 Lidl voucher.

thanks and good luck!

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream
I'd make a little salsa on the side with the celery (certain members of the family not so keen on celery...) and also a small garlic and cream and garic and tomato dip too.
I'd cut the chicken into strips to make garlicy chicken goujons and make wedge potatoes too. We love garlic in our house!

emmfurn · 11/10/2015 11:05

I'd chop the chicken and fry with the celery and garlic whilst boiling the potatoes. Once potatoes are cooked, I would slice them and arrange in a dish so the bottom is covered with potatoes. Then add on top a layer of chicken/garlic/celery then another layer of potatoes and so on. Then pour over the double cream. Add sliced tomatoes on top with grated cheese. Pop in the oven for around 20 minutes or until browned on top :)

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream

I would cook the chicken with the tomatoes, celery and garlic in the slow cooker before leaving the house to go to work. When I get home I would thinly slice the potatoes and place in a shallow dish with some cream and butter, season with salt and pepper and bake for thirty minute. Serve the chicken and potatoes on warm plates! The sauce from the chicken dish will be delicious spooned over the potatoes dish. While the potatoes are cooking I would get out of my work clothes, shower and been in my pj's ready to settle down for the evening. So easy yet so tasty Smile

Savoury Basket

I'd roast the tomatoes, two sticks of celery and some of the garlic (also some quartered onion if allowed) with some olive oil and a sprinkle of brown sugar, for about 40 minutes. Then use these roasted vegetables to make a well flavoured tomato soup. I'd serve it with a little of the double cream and home made croutons (if allowed).

I'd make Potatoes Boulangere.

I'd roast the chicken with the remaining garlic, some herbs and olive oil. Chop up the remaining celery, wrap it in a foil parcel and bake at the same time as the chicken.
With the double cream I'd make a peppercorn sauce, and surely a splash of brandy (or sherry at a pinch) would be allowed for the sauce!! Serve this with the chicken main course.

Serve with a pudding and wine from Lidl!! Chin-chin Wine Wine

Sweet basket - Apples, Chocolate, Butter, Pastry, Eggs, Double cream

I'm going to assume it's puff pastry Wink

I would slice the apples and lay them on the (rolled out) pastry, sprinkle with sugar, dot with butter and brush the edge of the pastry with beaten egg.

Bake to make an easy peasy apple tart. Then make a ganache with the chocolate and cream (warm cream and add chocolate until it's melted) to decorate and/or serve as truffles alongside.

AGrinWithoutACat · 11/10/2015 16:54

Savoury basket idea have added butter, olive oil and rosemary from the cupboard

Crush the garlic and mix with a little butter and rosemary, make thin slices, almost all the way through, all along the potatoes (hassleback style), top with the garlic & rosemary butter and bake in the oven

Slice the celery and toss in a little olive oil with the (cherry) tomatoes and cook with the chicken (drumsticks)

Cook both dishes for 30-45 mins in the oven, until chicken cooked through

I would serve this with another veg - probably corn-on-the-cob or would also be tempted to add aubergine and courgette in with the chicken

Would not use cream as have a dairy free child in the house so would save that for after the kids have gone to bed and have and indulgent choc cake drizzled with creamGrin

noorqt · 11/10/2015 18:04

I would make potatoe gnocchi. I would bake the potatoes until soft , when done I would peel and put them in a potatoe ricer of mash until very smooth. Add some flour and one egg from the store cupboard. Kneed lightly until it forms a soft dough, season to taste and roll and shape. Mean while boil water (like you would for pasta) and drop the gnocchi into the water and wait for them to float to the top.

In a separate saucepan put some butter and fry garlic, celery ,chunks of chicken and tomatoes until the chicken has cooked and put some cream. If you have some herbs like sage, would be nice and if the gnocchi has cooked then put it in the sauce and serve hot.

BellaVida · 11/10/2015 20:19

Savoury basket- I would make sea salted hassleback potatoes, blend the garlic, tomatoes and celery, double cream and mixed herbs then oven bake as a sauce over the chicken.

Sweet basket- I would make a chilled apple and dark chocolate torte. Blind bake the pastry brushed with egg. Cook and slice the apples and place them in a decorative pattern with a sprinkle of brown sugar. Melt dark chocolate and stir in the cream and melted butter. Drizzle over the apples.Leave to chill in the fridge.

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream

If I can chuck in some stock I would make my mum's gorgeous potato and celery soup by boiling the potatoes, frying off the celery, blending together with stock and salt until a smooth consistency. I can eat bowls of this stuff and even my picky son loves it. Add a bit of milk and it becomes a creamy delight.

I would use the chicken, garlic and cream to make a creamy garlic chicken and then throw some cherry tomatoes in at the end to soften slightly with the heat of the meal.

Quichey · 12/10/2015 20:01

Savoury
Marinate chicken in lemon, garlic, ginger, chilli, garam masala, yoghurt, bake in oven. Make sauce using cream, tomatoes, butter, garam masala, cumin - butter chicken. Parboil potatoes then fry with onion, garlic, ginger, garam masala.

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream

Fry diced onions until golden brown, then add celery and diced chicken and fry until cooked through. Add minced garlic, cream and seasoning and transfer to oven proof dish. Arrange parboiled sliced potatoes on top, a little more seasoning, then plenty of grated cheese, and finally sliced tomatoes (and another layer of grated cheese if you're a cheese fiend like myself) Bake in oven for approx. 30-45 mins, till cheese is lovely and brown

Titsalinabumsquash · 13/10/2015 09:21

I'd roast the tomatoes, half the garlic and celery in some olive oil, roast the chicken breast on a separate tray, then boil and mash the potatoes with the rest of the garlic and double cream then serve the mash topped with the sliced chicken (I'm assuming breast) topped with the roasted tomatoes and I'd serve some steamed green beans or broccoli with it is I was allowed. Smile

imkeepingeverythingcrossed · 13/10/2015 13:10

I would pick Savoury Smile

Fry some garlic and chilli flakes for a few minutes. Add chicken stock, the cream, the tomatoes, Parmesan if you have it (we always have it in the cupboard) some thyme, oregano and basil. Bring to boil and then simmer till it thickens. Put over browned chicken in oven dish and bake for 25-30 mins. Then I would use the potatoes, celery, garlic and remaining cream to make a potato gratin type dish to serve with the chicken. Slice pots and layer with cream, cheese salt pepper and celery finely diced.

There are a lot of yummy recipes on here. Will have to try some of them.

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream

Cut the chicken into strips and quick fry with crushed garlic using olive oil from the pantry.

Slice the celery and potatoes thinly and layer with the chicken and crushed tomatoes in an oiled dish. Top with some breadcrumbs mixed with Parmesan and cook in the oven.

Chuck the double cream back into the dessert basket!

EsmetheWitch · 14/10/2015 06:44

With the sweet basket I would make a chocolate custard tart with caramel apples.

Start by blind baking the pastry in two small tart cases, once crisp leave to cool.

Using the eggs, cream and chocolate make a thick but pourable custard. I would also add some vanilla and milk from store cupboard ingredients.

Thinly slice the apples and cook for a few minutes in the butter, adding in sugar (from store cupboard) to make a caramel. Once the apples are soft put aside to cool.

Assemble the tart by spooning the chocolate custard into the pastry cases and arranging the apple slices on top. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream and a grating of chocolate.

DrSausagedog · 14/10/2015 09:14

Savoury basket- I would slice the chicken into strips and fry in a little oil. In another frying pan fry cubed potatoes (1cm size). Then slice the celery, tomatoes and garlic and do the same for a few minutes. Combine the two pans contents and mix with the cream, warm on the heat for a couple of minutes then serve.

JessGG · 14/10/2015 09:35

I would choose savoury. I'd make a casserole in the slow cooker using the celery, garlic and chicken - just add some carrots, onion and stock. Then I'd serve with gorgeous creamy mashed potatoes using the potatoes and double cream. Yum!

BettyOctopus · 14/10/2015 09:35

Sweet basket - Apples, Chocolate, Butter, Pastry, Eggs, Double cream

Apple turnovers- soften chopped apple in microwave with splash of water and sugar, add knob of butter for richness

Cut pastry into squares, blob Apple into centre and fold over pastry into triangles

Brush with beaten egg and bake for about 20mins

Melt chocolate, and butter, add cream to make chocolate dipping sauce

CheeseEMouse · 14/10/2015 13:17

Sweet: Eve's pudding.

Stew apples in saucepan until cooked but still some texture.

Put in ovenproof dish.

Make topping by creaming butter and sugar together until white and fluffy. Add 2 whisked eggs bit by bit to butter and sugar mix. Fold in self raising flour and good pinch of salt. Add a couple of tablespoons of milk until mix has texture of thick pouring batter.

Put on top of apples and bake in over for 30mins until top risen and skewer comes out clean.

Serve with cream.

Eat chocolate with coffee later :)

Cambam2010 · 14/10/2015 15:32

Savoury Basket

I would cook a garlic cream sauce (garlic fried in butter, add cream and a bit of flour to thicken, and a shake of Parmesan if permitted) to serve over grilled chicken breasts (season chicken with oregano, basil, salt, pepper)

Hasselback potatoes and oven roasted tomatoes, celery and onion

Wilhamenawonka · 14/10/2015 16:55

Well given that Halloween is just around the corner I'd choose the sweet basket

I'd make Mini cauldrons from the pastry
Fill them with a chocolate ganache of cream and chocolate
Peel apples apart from the end and chop to make them look like fingers (peel end is fingernail)
Caramelise apple fingers and stick them in the cauldrons

EasterRobin · 15/10/2015 14:48

Sweet basket: Apples, Chocolate, Butter, Pastry, Eggs, Double cream

Oh dear, my baby's 9 months old and only has two teeth, so my idea of a family-friendly recipe may be rather different from the other posters.

Mix eggs with a knob of butter and a decent splash of double cream. Fry while whisking for scrambled egg. Then steam and purée the apple with some more cream for dessert. Hide chocolate from those grabby baby hands and eat once she's asleep and I can finally relax. Wonder why I bought pastry. Shrug and decide baby probably put it in my basket while I wasn't looking.

redlou · 15/10/2015 19:49

Sweet basket.

Like others I'd use the apples and puff pastry to make apple turnovers - chop apples, cook with brown sugar then once fully soft add a tbsp to pastry squares, folded over filling to make triangles.
With the rest of the ingredients I'd make chocolate mousse (uses raw egg so not suitable for everyone)
Melt the chocolate and butter, separate the eggs and whisk the egg whites, whip the cream, fold them together, allow to set.

Helspopje · 16/10/2015 12:28

Savoury

Hunters chicken stew with Boulanger potatoes

Brown chicken thighs, add chopped carrot onion and celery until onions clear. Garlic and some black olives and herbs then add chopped tinned tomatoes or passata. Cook low and long

Thinly slice potatoes and slivers of garlic. Later in a dish and add a mix of stock and cream as you go. Cook low and slow until top layer browned and crispy and underneath fall-apart soft.

Great winter fayre

Helspopje · 16/10/2015 12:35

Sweet

Using filo , makes some squares and line muffin tins with 4 oppositely layer buttered squares. Full with desired topping - we make lovely custard tarts with sugar cream and egg and dust the top with cinnamon or nutmeg. Stewed apple topped with thinly cut rolled apple is lovely too

If puff the options are endless - cinnamon rolls - sheet of puff, cinnamon and sugar, roll omto a Swiss roll and cut then bake until golden - Danish pastry squares with apricot or apple are a dawdle too.

Best thing for the chic butter and cream is a baked choc cheese cake - biscuit butter base, icing sugar, cream cheese, eggs and a touch of cream. Bake off and dust with grated choc
