Nurofen for Children have asked us to find out which special privileges and treats you use to distract your DC when they’re under the weather.

Here’s what Nurofen for Children have to say: “Our research shows that a quarter of parents find the health of their child the most difficult subject to make decisions on. As parents, you want health advice you can trust. Nurofen for Children is trusted by parents - 9/10 parents who used it would recommend it to a friend*. If your child is struck down with cold, pain or fever, Nurofen for Children offers products to help manage their symptoms. It starts to work in just 15 minutes to bring down a temperature and is clinically proven to last longer than paracetemol to relieve a fever.”

So, what do you let your DC's get away with when they're feeling under the weather? For example, are they allowed to watch TV or play with consoles for longer? Or are they allowed to eat as many sugary snacks as they like? Do you have any special games or inspired tips to keep them entertained when they're poorly?

Tell us how you spoil your kids when they're poorly and you'll be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

This got me thinking....
When I was little and I was poorly, several things were traditional:

  1. I had to stay in bed, no questions asked
  2. My nana would bring round a bottle of Lucozade for me, complete with orange cellophane wrapper
  3. My brother would go to the shop and get me a comic and (if I wasn't vomiting ill) a lollipop.

Now, when my kids are not well, firstly there's no way they would stay in bed. They have a blanket or quilt on the couch, and lie there watching cartoon channels all day, sickbowl to hand if necessary!
I wouldn't give them disgusting tasted fizz. They have a cup of water or weak dilute to sip at but that's it!
And the price of comics these days! No way.

as many ice lollies as they like (especially if they have a high temp), Disney DVD's in my bed snuggled up and I buy them their own box of tissues which always goes down well

serendipity1980 · 24/02/2015 11:43

I am definitely more lenient when my DC are ill, afterall, I do less when I'm feeling ill. I usually help them snuggle up on the sofa with a blanket and put a film or two on for them, depending how ill they are. Fortunately they are not ill often.

BigFatFurryCatPuss · 24/02/2015 12:03

I make mine a nest on the sofa with pillows and crocheted blankets, we snuggle up and read stories or watch disney films. Food wise they all love hot vimto like my Mum used to make for me when i was ill and easy food like egg and soldiers served on a tray (they think they're so grown up with a tray!). Ice lollies for sore throats are a must too Smile.

mumtowoo1 · 24/02/2015 13:22

When my girls are not well, we curl up with their duvet on the sofa and I let them pick films they want to watch. Soup for lunch and something sweet for afters.

andy07 · 24/02/2015 13:31

Im terrible I become a servant, everything they want and need is but a call away. hot water bottle, extra covers, snack, drink anything they want from shop within reason. I just want to help them recover quickly

simone12345 · 24/02/2015 14:45

When my children were bad we used to have lots hot drinks and put a dvd in a oniesie day all round

beckyinman · 24/02/2015 15:53

A special 'poorly blanket' which has magical healing powers, being in charge of the remote and lots of cuddles

MirandaGoshawk · 24/02/2015 17:39

My dc are grown up now but I used to buy them a toy animal, just as my mum did for me, one of the plastic ones for a couple of quid. They ended up with quite a collection.

Nuttynelnew · 24/02/2015 17:40

I always let them bring a duvet downstairs , I will make them if they can manage it some soup , and I always get them a magazine of their choice. We will sit together and watch their favourite movie - which varies as I have 6 children xxx t

they all know the treatment when they are poorly and look after each other

bradleysmum14 · 24/02/2015 22:36

My stepdaughter gets to snuggle on sofa, watch TV and snack lots. Also I do all her cleaning up for her, my sons only 1 so at moment gets extra milk or yogurts and plenty of cuddles:)

rosemac6 · 24/02/2015 23:14

We have a duvet day where they have my full attention and everything else except for the real essentials go on the back burner

newtothenet · 25/02/2015 07:23

My children are still only tiny, but I'm in the process of making them a hand sewn quiet book. I want it to be for special times rather than everyday play (so it doesn't get pulled to pieces) so I think I'll let them play with it when they're ill, or when we're waiting in a restaurant or similar and I need to keep them occupied.

audee · 25/02/2015 11:13

I give my little ones Nurofen and bring their duvet downstairs, with a hot drink and a big cuddle we watch her favourite movie. Its the one time a bit of spoiling goes a long way :)

I let them watch tv on the sofa with a duvet :)

mynellie · 25/02/2015 13:35

i am one that says if your off school ill then no there is no tv and you stay in bed you can read if you wish but that is it i do let them eat what is ever easiest for them to eat but i find by making sure illness does not equate to a grand day off school they are not so keen to try and pull a fast one

worldgonecrazy · 25/02/2015 15:27

So, are you a bit more lenient on your Darling Children when they’re feeling under the weather?

Definitely more lenient.

Do you let them set up camp with a duvet on the sofa?

We have a special blanket - it belonged to Great Granny and is only used on special occasions so that she gets several generations of cuddles.

Or are they allowed to eat as many sugary snacks as they like?

Chocolate buttons are the sickness treat - they melt easily so don't require any effort.

Do you have any special games or inspired tips to keep them entertained when they're poorly?

Cuddles and more cuddles.

momofmonster · 25/02/2015 16:30

If ds is genuinely ill then all he wants to is snuggle up and sleep so usually so yes we curl up, put on a movie and he will fall asleep on the sofa. If he wants to play on the Xbox then I know he's pulling a sickie so he gets sent to bed with a book.

SweetPeaPods · 25/02/2015 20:26

Definitely more lenient. Ds1 is allowed to sleep in my bed (so I can monitor him) and he naps on sofa.
He's recently been very poorly with tonsillitis and he was allowed to eat what ever he fancied and watched a lot more CBeebies than normal.

mawbroon · 25/02/2015 20:26

Depends how sick they are and what is wrong with them.

Slightly under the weather? Telly and duvet while I get on with stuff.

Puking, I sit with them and make sure they are on target for the sick bowl. We have a "sick bag" to hand with designated sick bowl, anti bac wipes and hand gel, gloves, kitchen roll etc.

Very ill with anything else and they usually want to sleep. I let them sleep on the sofa so I can keep an eye on them, although I can't remember when either of them were as ill as that tbh.

Tean1 · 25/02/2015 21:39

I let them doze in front of the TV with a blanket.

Daariina · 25/02/2015 21:43

Breakfast in bed for a whole week. I like to pamper them lol.

sadiewoohoo · 25/02/2015 23:58

I bring the duvet down to the sofa and put a side table next to them with juice on.

pixiewolfe · 26/02/2015 01:35

I give them chocolate and hugs when feeling unwell..unless they are vomiting them I give them water and hugs.
