The team at Specsavers would love to all about your habits (good or bad) with your contact lenses.

We all know hygiene and eyes is very important – so do you tend to toe the line and follow instructions to the letter? Or are you a bit {ahem} lax in that department? How about when you were younger – or had different lenses? How do you dispose of disposable lenses? Does your DP wear them and leave them lying around when they should be in the bin?

Specsavers say "Here at Specsavers we like to make is easy for contact lens wearers - wearing contact lenses gives you freedom and convenience. And at Specsavers, when you buy contact lenses you get more than just the lenses. Our all-inclusive package not only gives you some fantastic benefits but is also an easy way to pay for your lenses. We'll give you a pair of glasses from our £45 range or designer frames from just £35, full aftercare, future sight tests as recommended by your optician and we'll deliver your lenses and solutions, at no extra cost."

Share your habits – good and bad - and everyone who does will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 voucher from here

Please note Specsavers may use your comments - anon of course - on their pages on MN, on their social media or possibly elsewhere - please only post if you're happy with this.

Thanks and good luck

I use daily disposable because I know how good I start off I will get lax after a while, so its better to be safe than sorry, thank you Spec Savers love my contacts

winkymcwinkle · 01/03/2015 21:44

I don't wear contacts but would hope that I would maintain good hygiene if I did!

meggymaes · 01/03/2015 21:45

I wear daily disposables and always make sure I wash my hands when inserting my lenses.

Having a new pair every day gives me peace of mind.

snare · 01/03/2015 22:14

I used to wear contacts and didn't always wash my hands

cookinmummy · 01/03/2015 22:26

I wear glasses full time and ive still not been able to bite the bullet and try contacts! The thought of poking myself in the eye or catching an eye infection has always worried me. Glad to see many on here have had great feedback to give on contacts!

baconbap · 01/03/2015 22:46

i used to wear hard lenses and wasn't very strict about hygiene - never had any trouble till I moved to the countryside and the pollen stopped me using them

becky004 · 01/03/2015 22:54

I use daily disposables and am obsessed with hygeine as eyes are so delicate, I wash hands and dry them in a paper towel before putting them in or removing them.

laylat · 01/03/2015 23:17

I'm not that great, always use the monthly way longer than i should. Meticulous about washing hands before touching them though.

janemphoto · 01/03/2015 23:56

I wear contact lenses. I buy monthly but because I don't wear them every day, usually only twice or three times a week I tend to use them longer than just one month, purely because the cost of dailies is too high. I clean lenses every time I use them and change the solution they are stored in regularly and always wash my hands when putting them in and never had any problems.

bc1616 · 02/03/2015 00:45

I use daily disposables because I'm lazy and I don't have to worry about them too much, I just make sure my hands are clean!

shelljess82 · 02/03/2015 04:30

I mainly wear my contacts in the Spring/Summer months. I used to have dailies but as my eye sight is applauding & I'm very nearly classed as partially sighted I've had to get contact made especially for my eyes & they only do them in a monthly lens & the price is ridiculously high for me!

I would say that I'm not over the top when it comes to my contact hygiene but I certainly make sure my hands & eyes are clean before handling & inserting the lenses. For hygiene reasons I would prefer dailies though. I have only ever had infection from the contacts but that was when I was very young (16 years) & new to the whole contact lenses world!

MrsCornish · 02/03/2015 07:22

I have been wearing lenses for 35 years. 10 years gas permeable them 25 fortnightly disposable. I never wash my hands before taking them out. I never clean them. just put them in their pot every night with a squirt of solution.. wear about 17 hours a day. I'm currently on a direct debit arrangement with vision express so get annual check ups. If I did clean them I would use far more than my monthly bottle of solution. have never bothered to raise this with them.

ModernToss · 02/03/2015 08:54

I'm yet another long-term gas permeable wearer with very bad habits. Why is it always the GP wearers who do this, I wonder? Is it decades of wear that makes us feel safe, or are they just more robust-seeming than disposables?

I'm off to give them a good clean now; I feel guilty (but will no doubt stick one in my mouth later if there's something on it).

aligiraffe · 02/03/2015 09:40

I wear glasses almost all of the time now. I used to always wear lenses but I got given the wrong solution once & had a severe allergic reaction & ended up in eye casualty with a patch over my eye for a couple of weeks. If I wear contact lenses now I can only have daily disposables with a very high water content. I am also very careful about washing my hand before putting them in & removing them if my eyes start to feel a little agitated.

roar349 · 02/03/2015 09:46

I used to wear daily disposables but found I wasn't wearing them (always forgetting to put them on at 5am as I left for work)

hannahlw85 · 02/03/2015 11:21

I wear the contacts that you can sleep in, but give my eyes a break and wear glasses for 1 week a month. I always thoroughly wash my hands before going anywhere near my eyes, I have an immune deficiency so easily get bacterial infections, and my eyes are a real weakness so have to be careful. i'm strict with always using contact lens solution to clean the lenses if I've had to take them out for any reason as tap water has microbes in it that can start eating away at the eye and cause blindness and my sight it too precious to ever risk that When the lenses are finished with I out them the the pack I've taken my new lenses from and bin them straight away, I have a dog that will eat anything so never leave anything lying around. I would love to always wear contacts as I hate glasses but can't as am prone to forming dry spots on my cornea so can do permanent damage if not careful. I do love the freedom of contacts though

12LuDo · 02/03/2015 11:45

When I first started wearing glasses years ago, I tried contact lenses, but I found all the hygiene and faffing about too time consuming for every day, so gave up. Since then, they have introduced disposables, so I keep thinking I should give those a go. From what I've been reading here, things are a bit more straightforward these days!

MerryMarigold · 02/03/2015 13:24

Just to add, I think I am pretty revolting generally. Some days I don't wash Shock, my toilet isn't super clean, I'm messy and untidy. But when it comes to your eyes, you just don't really mess with them (apart from wearing lenses for too long!).

pepicola3 · 02/03/2015 13:25

No contacts - glasses only

chriskeenan86 · 02/03/2015 14:44

My hygiene isn't the best let's say and I never really thought about where my hands had been before putting contacts in... until now! Think I might be slightly more wary from now on.

TiggersAngel7774 · 02/03/2015 16:21

Only ever worn glasses, too nervous to go poking myself in eye or losing an expensive lens. If i was suitable for daillies i might be tempted to try but never been offered by my optician

superkittycat · 02/03/2015 16:35

No, I wear glasses instead, contact lenses freak me out a bit!

piggypoo · 02/03/2015 17:17

After having a really awful eye infection, my fault, I slept in my contacts, and didn't take my make up off for days, being a daft teenager at the time, and nearly lost the sight in my left eye when I went swimming in the sea with them in, and caught another dreadful infection, I am now clean to the point of paranoia. I wash my hands for 30 seconds, use paper towels to dry, and then clean the lenses without fail. I know it can be a chore, but when threatened with sight loss, it puts things into perspective!

sydroo · 02/03/2015 19:03

I'm really careful with regards to hygiene and my contact lenses, I've been wearing them since I was fourteen and only ever had one infection. That was when I went to a festival in the middle of nowhere in Ireland where the facilities were very basic to say the least.

ClashCityRocker · 02/03/2015 19:22

I wear contacts at the weekend or if I'm going out on a weekday evening - daily disposables for me, probably about 18 hours max.

I'm usually very good with making sure my hands are clean before putting in and taking out. Worst thing I've ever done was, after a big night out, thought I'd removed them but must have just knocked them enough to blur my vision.

I woke up the next morning, and to my shock, I could see perfectly. I thought it was a miracle and my eyes had somehow repaired themselves - then twigged that I'd not removed the contacts from the night before.
