We've been asked by Tesco to find out about Mumsnetters' store cupboard heroes.

Here’s what Tesco say, “The Tesco Eat Happy Project is our long-term commitment to help children have a healthier and happier relationship with their food. We’ve got lots of recipes for healthy, tasty dishes that we think they’ll love – especially if they help you prepare them. But we’re keen to hear your recipe ideas too.”

So, what is your store cupboard hero and what are your top 3 ways to use it? Perhaps you always keep pesto in your cupboard, to stir into pasta, pep up a risotto or spread onto pastry to make a savoury puff? Or maybe you like to have lentils in stock, to add to soup, bulk out a stew or make a warm winter salad with?

Whatever your store cupboard hero is, Tesco would love to hear about it!

Everyone who adds their comments to the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 Tesco voucher.

Please note that any comments posted on this thread may be used by Tesco in further marketing material (anonymously, of course).

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

Flour tortillas!!!!!!!!!!
They are just brilliant...........I use them as wraps with various fillings for my kids packed lunches, my husband cooks amazing fajitas using them as a very popular family dinner and the kids often make quesadillas themselves (cook with melted cheese inside) for lunches at the weekend. My cupboard is never without them!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love tinned tomatoes for quick pasta sauce, soups or risottos

lizd31 · 01/02/2015 10:03

I always have passata in my fridge, it's great to make pasta sauces, chilli con carne, moussake or my family favourite Vegetarian Lincolnshire sausage cheesy potato bake

TribbleTrickswithTinsel · 01/02/2015 10:07

Flour. For cakes and breads I make.
Batter, toad in the hole is a family fave.
Thicken soups and stews.

I have been trying to think of something different, but nothing tops tinned tomatoes, as they keep for so long. I use them on pizza, as a base for pasta sauces or as part of a full English breakfast.

Basmati Rice. Every time I shop I pick up a bag, it's cheap and bulks out loads of different meals, quick to cook too

Green Pesto is the one for me! It adds a bit of oomph to lots of different meals that we make, plus straightforward pesto stirred into pasta is a quick easy tasty meal! We also use it to oil the trays for cooking pizzas to add some bonus flavour!

Chickpeas:

Great in a curry,
great for making houmous,
great for making chickpea cakes instead of potato cakes.

cluckyhen · 01/02/2015 11:55

Tinned Tomatos - we use it with pasta, in stews and also for making sauces! I can't live without them.

littleme96 · 01/02/2015 12:18

Garlic granules are essential in our house! We use them to season roast potatoes with fresh rosemary, in homemade garlic bread, in pizza sauce and in pasta dishes like carbonara.

beckyinman · 01/02/2015 12:27

Passata - I use it in everything: soups, chilli, pasta sauce, curry

cheryl100 · 01/02/2015 14:16

Mine has to be wholegrain mustard, i put it in mashed potato, in stews and in sauces :)

mdavidson · 01/02/2015 14:40

dried pasta - so easy and quick, and cheap!

store cupboard favourite has to be tinned tomatoes - pasta/rice sauces, casseroles or even just on toast

amrobe · 01/02/2015 16:10

Tinned tomatoes. My top ways of using them are as a pasta sauce, instead of beans if I have a cheeky fry up, in a tagine, and sometimes with boiled eggs and toast for when I need a more filling breakfast.

Jezzamk · 01/02/2015 16:40

Tinned Tuna. It can sit in the cupboard for ages, making useful as an emergency ingredient. I use it for Tuna Pasta Bake, Tuna Salad and Tuna Sandwiches.

It will even do as cat food in an emergency. My cats don't think there are enough times when I have run out of cat food and have to resort to giving them my tuna.

cheekychicken24 · 01/02/2015 17:41

Yet another vote for tinned tomatoes! Add them to tinned tuna for a quick pasta sauce, plus chilli etc. Also add to shepherds pie to make the meat go further, and corned beef hash!

rominycolville · 01/02/2015 17:43

butter beans - can be part of salad but even better mashed with garlic!! great alternative to regular mash - yum!!

Soosieboo · 01/02/2015 18:10

Worcestershire sauce is my hero. Use it to enrich cottage pie, bolognese, stews and casseroles.
Shake a little into soup or on top of scrambled/poached eggs.

JoJoBaldwin · 01/02/2015 18:13

Dried red lentils - throw them into soups, chilis and make lovely dahls!

chocolateshoes · 01/02/2015 18:36

DH says his is pine nuts and his 3 fav ways to use it are:

  1. In homemade pesto
  2. With frozen spinach & creme fraiche as a pasta sauce
  3. Toasted, with roast vegetables & couscous
dragon60 · 01/02/2015 20:07

Liquorice13 · 01/02/2015 20:07

Smoked Paprika - great for refried beans, bbq sauce and as a rub for meat
