We've been asked by Tesco to find out about Mumsnetters' store cupboard heroes.

Here’s what Tesco say, “The Tesco Eat Happy Project is our long-term commitment to help children have a healthier and happier relationship with their food. We’ve got lots of recipes for healthy, tasty dishes that we think they’ll love – especially if they help you prepare them. But we’re keen to hear your recipe ideas too.”

So, what is your store cupboard hero and what are your top 3 ways to use it? Perhaps you always keep pesto in your cupboard, to stir into pasta, pep up a risotto or spread onto pastry to make a savoury puff? Or maybe you like to have lentils in stock, to add to soup, bulk out a stew or make a warm winter salad with?

Whatever your store cupboard hero is, Tesco would love to hear about it!

Everyone who adds their comments to the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 Tesco voucher.

Please note that any comments posted on this thread may be used by Tesco in further marketing material (anonymously, of course).

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

Worcester Sauce. Amazing stuff. Top 3 ways to use it are on cheese on toast or pizza, big slug in a spag bol really makes a difference and can't have a bloody mary without it!

Dried past shapes - so versatile - I cook for so many hot dishes-like pasta cake, spag ball etc I cook and cool for salad pasta - eg tuna and pasta - I add to chunk out home-made soups - I add to stir frys and I eat it straight from the packet!!!!

catgav31 · 31/01/2015 17:55

Porridge oats, used for breakfast porridge, flapjacks and homemade cereal bars!

Dorual · 31/01/2015 18:13

Tinned tuna in sunflower oil. I use it for many different meals, including: tuna pasta bake, tuna sweetcorn and lemon fishcakes, and tuna minestrone soup, to name a few. It's so versatile, and is a great source of protein - definitely a store cupboard staple.

BigfootFilesHisToesInYourTea · 31/01/2015 18:23

Garlic puree - goes in the base of most (savoury) dishes: spag bol, chilli, goulash. Much easier than faffing with a clove.

Crocklebog · 31/01/2015 18:35

Tinned tomatoes and tuna for me. Can be turned into anything with some cous cous or pasta.

gabbyevs · 31/01/2015 18:37

hot sauce

my husband likes it in everything so spag bol chilli con carne and soup

bamblolo · 31/01/2015 18:43

mine is long grain rice, we can have this boiled, fried rice ,rice salad. we have it with most meals and its versatile.

HangingInAGruffaloStance · 31/01/2015 18:47

I was going to say tinned tomatoes, but that theme may be getting exhausted!

Baked beans are great for an easy lunch (on toast or on a baked potato), also great mixed into cottage pie recipe and topped with mashed sweet potato.

Couscous is an other favourite - used as an accompaniment to a tagine, mixed through a salad with lemon and pomegranate, or with sundried tomatoes as a side to leftover roast chicken for a quick after nursery pickup tea.

Mistyblue01 · 31/01/2015 18:48

Red lentils - throw them in soups and casseroles to add some bulk, also make dhal and add to curries.

abigailflo7 · 31/01/2015 18:48

worcestershire sauce, use it to spice up bolognese, cheese on toast and meatballs, in fact a lot of my recipes have worcestershire sauce in them!

KittyKat88 · 31/01/2015 18:59

Seems to be popular, but I always have a carton of passata in the cupboard - great for quick, simple sauces, or add to casseroles and shepherds/cottage pies. An easy base for homemade pizzas which my DDs love to prepare themselves! Along with that, I always have a jar of Italian Herbs - and it simply goes in with the passata! The third thing I keep in te cupboards is a tin of fruit (pear/peach/mango slices) as these can be added to breakfast cereals or yoghurts for a tasty treat! (and if I can add a cheeky 4th, it would be maple syrup - yum!)

wannabestressfree · 31/01/2015 19:05

Mine is the tubes of paste so garlic and sun dried tomato. I use the garlic to secrete garlic 'goodness' into spag Bol, stir fry, meat etc. I swear it keeps the colds away :)

twinklenic · 31/01/2015 19:14

my store cupboard hero is soy sauce, i literally use it in everything. it makes your gravy really tasty , it adds an extra kick when making stuffing and for stews and potato hash it brings out the flavour

compy99 · 31/01/2015 19:34

baked beans, can always fall back on these on jacket potato, on toast or a beanie bubble and squeak!

ElectroNymph · 31/01/2015 19:40

Tuna: on toast, sandwiches, pasta etc.

Funkyferret · 31/01/2015 20:00

Soy sauce for me. I don't add salt when I'm cooking but I'll add a little soy to gravy, use it in a stir fry or make an olive oil, soy and garlic dip for bread.

IMPULSE737 · 31/01/2015 20:06

chopped tomatoes - get through loads of tins, fabulous for home made sauces

maryandbuzz1 · 31/01/2015 20:09

We use a lot of chopped tomatoes. They can be used in so many ways. Usually we have them in chilli, Shepherds pie and lasagne but they are so versatile and can be put in so many dishes.

lhlee62 · 31/01/2015 20:13

Pasta is a life saver, my kids love it in any form, with pesto, with cheese, with tomato based pasta sauce or with tuna, mayonnaise and sweetcorn

mave · 31/01/2015 20:13

Tomatoes for me too, I buy so many tons for pasta, curry, casseroles, loads of stuff, they're fab!

RACHELSMITH45 · 31/01/2015 20:27

Beans are big in this house! We love them and so do the kids! Great to go with meals but also a great snack with a piece of toast! We always keep a good supply!;-)

rainbowvalley · 31/01/2015 20:32

Definitely whole tinned tomatoes they are so versatile and I use them a lot
great to make pasta sauce - fry chopped bacon until crispy in real Butter add Onions sprinkle in some flour to make a roux consistency and add 1 tin of tomatoes with salt and pepper to taste.

Spag Bolognese - Fry onions, minced beef with bay leaves sieve tinned tomatoes (using a colander and the end of the tin) to make Pasata sauce cook together for 1 hr and hey presto! I top with parmesan.

Make Ratatouille with tinned Tomatoes fry Corgettes, Onions, garlic and Aubergines then add tomatoes.

acsec · 31/01/2015 20:32

Tuna - it goes in DSS' sandwiches, tuna pasta bake and in my yummy slimming world quiche.

BellaWella86 · 31/01/2015 20:33

Mine is Heinz BBQ sauce. I use it as a dip (yummy to dip pizza crusts in to!), as a 'secret ingredient' in a slow cooked bolognese (really adds a kick to it) or on top of cheese for a scrumptious cheese toastie.
