Lindam has asked us to find out when Mumsnetters first start thinking about child safety in the home.

Here's what Lindam says, "Safety is absolutely paramount for any parent and in fact, latest research by Which? has found safety to be a top priority for new mothers and fathers. Research findings showed that safety gates are the most popular and useful products for new families and in the run up to Child Safety Week (23rd-29th June) we're really keen to raise awareness of just how important safety gates are, and which ones are best for each individual families' needs.

Finding the right gate can be overwhelming but there really is something for everyone. Pressure Fit or Wall fix are available to fit a range of openings. Gates also have a range of handles and closing mechanisms depending on your requirements. From a Pressure Fit option such as Easy Fit Plus Deluxe to the top of the range Wall Fix NUMI Aluminium Extending Safety Gate, safety, quality and value are key for all gates and each now comes with a lifetime guarantee.

For further information, and to see the wider Lindam range, please visit www.lindam.com"

You may have seen that we've run a survey with Lindam recently about safety at home. It emerged that approximately 34% of you start thinking about including safety products in the home once baby starts crawling. We'd now love to hear when other Mumsnetters started considering how best to safety proof their homes. Would you fall into the 34% that start considering it when baby starts crawling? Or would you consider it earlier or later on? How many gates have you bought for your home? What do you think is more important, product features or value for money? Do you buy safety products to install in your home, or do you create your own safety measures instead? Or perhaps a mixture? Whatever they are, or whatever it is, we'd love to hear it!

Everyone who comments on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a Full Lindam Home Safety Pack which is worth up to £378 (depending on what you choose!).

Please be aware that Lindam may use any comments posted here in future marketing material (anonymously, of course). Please only post if you’re happy with that.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

I'm thinking now at 6 months. I had better get a move on though, time is flying by so fast she'll be 18 by the time I've actually bought anything!

Spirael · 19/06/2014 23:48

I started considering child safety while pregnant and made a few changes and furnishing choices based on it. The bulk of safety measures were applied at 6 months and then evolved as needed.

Legwarmersforboys · 20/06/2014 21:01

I though about it when he was born but didn't do anything about it.

Now hes crawling I want to sort it but I am too knackered to summon up the energy to sort out what is really needed from all the stuff that is out there.
Do i want baby gates on every door? (i have a small house every door downstairs is only 2 doors) or do i just put one on the bottom of the stairs? (if i do this where will i sit to put my shoes on)

Japaninthesweep · 20/06/2014 21:52

We first started thinking about it when I was pregnant.

We thought about it some more the day DS started to crawl and pulled the fireplace off the wall when I went into the kitchen for less than 1 minute. (10 months)

And some more when we moved into a house with stairs in the livingroom. (18 months)

And when he managed to reach the cooker dials, then more urgently when he started to push and turn them. yesterday (24 months).

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread, but I suspiciously checked the link to their website and they are SELLING THE DANGEROUS SOCKET COVERS

Is it possible that they are still not aware the UK electrical sockets have inbuilt shutters over the contacts, and that THEIR COVERS MAKE THEM MORE DANGEROUS?

Howe can any company which claims to be in the safety business be so ignorant? Or cynical? As to sell products which REDUCE SAFETY?

For the benefit of anyone who doesn't already know. Such as Lindam UK sockets have been the word's safest for over 60 years.

FatallyFlawed · 22/06/2014 06:36

Thanks to PigletJohn for the message above, and to everyone else here who has drawn attention to why plug-in socket covers should never be used.

The most important thing to remember is that there are NO socket covers which have been approved for use in British sockets, every one on the market is made to the wrong size! Socket covers are completely unnecessary in British sockets, and they reduce safety.

Lindam themselves make two types of plug-in socket covers, you can see the review of their round ones here and their so-called "Dual Guard" covers here complete with a video.

It would be great if Mumsnet would take the lead on exposing the scam of unsafe socket covers for British sockets.

I'm 20 weeks pregnant and have already assumed I'll need at least 2 stair gates and a good declutter plus a cupboard lock on the undersink cupboard.
My brother has 2 kids and always says how unsafe our house is but never offers specifics so I may get him to help now that I'm pregnant.
I have narrow doors and stairs so reading the comments above have made me wonder about what widths of stair gate are available.

Foxymumma · 22/06/2014 23:23

It was my then partner who first brought safety to my attention. He looked around the house when I was pregnant and spotted all the danger spots and wanted to wrap the walls in cotton wall!
He was right though as both boys have been really active and strong so we needed to baby-proof and then some more as they pulled safety plug sockets out and wrestled protective corners off tables....
