Spook up an apple cake- standard apple cake recipe- 8 diced apples., 8oz flour sugar butter or flora..... , 4 eggs. Once in the tin, thinly slice apples to make spooky eye shapes and spikey teeth. Lay on top of cake and bake

Graveyard worm cupcakes

For the cakes,

100g plain flour
20g cocoa powder (i use cadbury bourneville)
140g caster sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
a pinch of salt
40g unsalted butter (essential that it is at room temperature)
120ml whole milk
1 egg
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
a 12-hole cupcake tray,lined with paper cases

Preheat the oven to 170C(325F)Gas 3
Out the flour ,cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, salt and butter in a free standing electric mixer with paddle attachment (or use a handheld electric whisk)and beat on a slow speed until you get a sandy consitency and everything is combined.

Whisk the milk, egg, and vanilla extract together in a jug ,then slowly pour about half into the flour mixture, beat to combine and turn the mixer up to high speed (scrape any unmixed ingredients from the side of the bowl with a rubber spatula).Continue mixing for a couple more minutes until the mixture is smooth.

Spoon the mixture into the paper cases until two-thirds full and bake in a preheated oven for 20-25 minutes,or until the sponge bounces back when touched.A skewer inserted in the center should come out clean.Leave the cupcakes to coll slightly in the tray before turning out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

When cakes are cool ice with chocolate butter icing.

Then crush up some Oreos and dip the cakes upside down in the crumbs.

Then get some fudge and roll small bits into worms. Arrange on top of the cakes so they look like worms poking through the crumbs/soil.

I made pumpkin cakepops last night - choc cake in my Lakeland cake pop machine, a stalk from fruitella fruit strip, coated in orange candy melt. Pumpkin face put on with melted choc off a toothpick.

In the end I did the sweetie spiders with a tunnocks teacake as the body and half a mini marshallow for each eye.

Crem - that sounds bloody gorgeous.

whattodoo · 31/10/2013 18:50

Dead man's burgers - mini burgers in bums with tom ketchup oozing out.

Witches fingers - rolled up slices of ham with a flaked almond as a finger nail.

Basic fairy cakes with green/red icing, topped with a (sweetie) eyeball.

I drew pumpkin faces on satsuma skins this year with a permanent marker. I piled them all up in a bowl.

The dds loved them and thought I was really clever!!! (Easily pleased!!)

I drew the line at giving them to trick n treaters though - not sure that would go down well!

Iwaswatchingthat · 31/10/2013 19:24

The satsumas were still inside the skins by the way!!!

www.chocolatecakeblog.com/cake-recipes/low-fat-chocolate-halloween-cupcakes/ This look so nice and low fat to boot!

I don't like halloween as everything's so scary so I go creative in a non-scary spiderwebby way

missorinoco · 31/10/2013 21:02

We are going to have pumpkin soup tomorrow because I forgot today, but there was naff all useable pumpkin left after DH had hollowed them out, so I will add a butternut squash whilst the DC aren't looking. Like they will eat it anyway...

Loving the jelly worms idea. Also like that green jelly and sweets goo plan. Maybe next year for the trick or treaters.

MiconiumHappens · 31/10/2013 21:14

Nothing scary here but I always make a stew in the slow cooker for when we gat back from trick or treating. Throw some petis pans in the oven with lots of Flora (of course). And voila lovely warming meal - I did lamb stew tonight with all the usual plus sweet potato, it's orange so hallowe'eney!

Also do this for getting in after bonfire night.

flamingtoaster · 31/10/2013 21:38

Cake with iced spider web on top, hollowed out and carved oranges filled with already set jelly (and the lids put on again) to look like pumpkins, - we don't like anything too scary!

GetKnitted · 31/10/2013 21:47

was about to write that too unadulterateddad

my recipe is:

12 satsumas
1 sharpie

Hopezibah · 31/10/2013 23:18

The kids don't like Halloween at all in our house! But that doesn't stop us baking as they love baking. Rather than focus on Halloween though, they do things like Autumn leaf shape cookies, firework cakes (lots of colourful sprinkles and stars on chocolate ganache cake or mini ones too), we've also made a green frog cake before so I suppose that could be considered a bit halloweeny (round bowl shaped cake, decorated in green icing to look like a frog).

kateandme · 01/11/2013 02:49

pastry wrapped round sausages for spooky mummys.
cupcakes are always fab.becasue you can ice them with spooky faces, orange for pumpkins, spiders.all sorts.
marshmellows with faces drawn on then stuck on sticks for ghosts.
make jelly, put worms and halloween themed harribo in the bottom of glasses and pour in jelly.

kateandme · 01/11/2013 02:51

tomato sauce cheese on toast or pizza bases and shaping the blobs of cheese as ghosts and putting pepper/herbs for the eyes and mouth has worked a treat!!

Bubbles85 · 01/11/2013 08:29

I'm afraid I take the easy option like another poster above. A couple of years ago I bought some Halloween shaped cookie cutters. I use these to make some scary cookies. A bit of green icing does wonders!

Trills · 01/11/2013 08:38

The best cheesy biscuit - can be cut into any shape
150g grated cheddar
100g plain flour
50g butter
mix it all up and add enough milk to make a pasty-like dough, roll out, cut shapes, cook at 200C.

Happiestinwellybobs · 01/11/2013 14:13

I have just ordered a fairy cottage mould, so next year, am going to do a spooky gingerbread house with cobwebs and gravestones I front of it. DD will be old enough for a party then, so I am hoping i can pull it off.

I will have a practice with a hansel and gretel cottage for Christmas.

I just need to prefect my gingerbread recipe :)

Jinty64 · 01/11/2013 15:57

Decorate cupcakes with black icing and edible eyes for "spider cakes".

Glitterfairys · 01/11/2013 18:02

Halloween Rocky Road -

Usual Rocky Road recipe but leave gummy worms sticking out the mixture and then when chilled put a cobweb stencil on top and sprinkle with icing sugar to give the impression of a spooky graveyard scene .

Jims · 02/11/2013 14:34

Not v imaginative but we did fairy cakes with spiderwebs on last year. I was at work this year so just about managed a pumpkin. Ds1 was asking if i had finished making it as soon as i took the lid off. Patience is not his strong point

Trills · 02/11/2013 15:34

I've also made "Catherine Wheels" using a cinnamon bun recipe :)
