Tell The National Lottery what you’d do with a fantasy £20,000 - £250 voucher prize draw! NOW CLOSED

You may have heard recently that The National Lottery's Lotto game is changing this autumn and is introducing a new Raffle where 50 players will win £20,000 in each draw. To celebrate this, The National Lottery have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters would do with (a fantasy) £20,000.

Here's what The National Lottery say: "As of 5th October, Lotto is changing, offering more ways to win more money. The prize for matching three numbers will be increased from £10 to £25, the jackpots will be bigger (£2.5million on Wednesday and £5million on Saturdays) and there's a new raffle where 50 players will win a guaranteed £20,000 each draw. Tickets for the new game go on sale on 3rd October and cost £2 per line. We would love to hear about how Mumsnetters would spend £20,000 if they were to win the raffle prize!"

So what would you do if you were to win £20,000? Would you go on a huge spending spree, or would you be more careful with your winnings and put it aside for a rainy day?

What have you always wanted to do, but have never managed to justify the cost of? Dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant? Buy a piece of designer jewellery? Maybe you'd splash it all on a round the world holiday? Or perhaps you'd save it to make life easier for you and your DCs if they decide to go to university? Or would you take the opportunity to clear (some) debts or pay off a chunk of the mortgage?

Whatever it is, The National Lottery would love to hear about it.

Everyone who shares their thoughts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

yup you're right I was wishfully thinking it was 200,000 sigh. oh well new car it is then Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2013 16:41

We could share it and spend it all on Wine to take our minds off the fees, maybe? :)

FairyJen · 10/08/2013 16:47

Eat more than one meal every other day

farrowandbawl · 10/08/2013 17:10

Pay the gas bill seeing as prices are going up again. Sad

majjsu · 10/08/2013 19:01

Ooh it would be fab. I would give some to our parents and siblings to enjoy. Would buy a pony for my little girl. Then a lovely holiday in Disney Paris.

MickleMe · 10/08/2013 19:03

I'd use it to pay off debts and the remaining money would be the deposit towards a bigger house. I can dream Grin

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 10/08/2013 19:19

id give it all to dh so he can pay off our debts and put the rest in our "house deposit" account.

ldt87 · 10/08/2013 19:23

I would use it all towards a house, we are desperate to own our own place but I cant see us being able to for a long time as it stands at the moment.

WitchOfEndor · 10/08/2013 19:24

Spend £10,000 on a 3 week top notch, full throttle Disney experience in Florida and use the rest to over pay on the mortgage so we can have breathing space. All quite selfish really.

Oh I've spent imaginary lottery wins many times!

I'd buy a camper van and do a tour of the south west coast of Australia (in a camper of course)

You could always give everyone who has posted 20k to prove that's how they really would spend the cash Grin

mrscog · 10/08/2013 19:29

Use it towards our next house purchase. 20k is the difference between moving into something we'll grow out of again and being able to buy something that will last the next 20 years.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 10/08/2013 20:46

god plan remus Wine

ILoveMyCaravan · 10/08/2013 21:34

Pay off debts.

Finish off renovating the house after thirteen very long years waiting for it to be done.

Have a family holiday abroad.

Kikibee · 10/08/2013 21:38

Put it towards a swimming pool fund :)

VileWoman · 10/08/2013 22:04

Abig chunk of it would go on a new car, ours is limping along at the moment. Then the rest would go toward a new kitchen with a Fab-u-lous oven.

MrsRachelLynde · 10/08/2013 22:33

Twenty grand would just about clear our negative equity debts, with enough left over to treat me and dh to a tunnocks teacake each.

damppatchnot · 10/08/2013 22:38

Take the children on a long awaited holiday and pay off bills. Wink

RubySparks · 10/08/2013 22:42

Either camper van or big holidays! Would like to go on safari in Africa and go to ComicCon in San Diego next summer, maybe both if camper van very very cheap..... Would like to do lots of summer festivals so camper van would be great for that.

sabretiggr · 10/08/2013 22:45

Would love to get a eco-friendly car (well as eco-friendly as a car can be!). The running costs are usually really favourable and we love that the impact on the environment is so much less - but what makes it prohibitive for us is the initial buying cost. We always try to teach the kids to be more responsible and kinder to the environment yet it is hard to show that when it comes to driving - so that's what I'd do with 20K.

BigGapMum · 10/08/2013 22:53

a) Have a beautiful new fitted kitchen

b) Recarpet the house

c) Take the family on holiday to somewhere exotic and exciting

d) Put some away for my sons' futures

e) Invest some in a pension for our retirement

f) Have the garden landscaped

g) Use it to retrain to start a new career or invest in a business

How many times can I spend this money?

Hopezibah · 10/08/2013 22:53

We'd build a sensory room for our son! (and open it up for his other ASD friends to use too). Huge lack of resource for this locally and yet so many kids need it. Getting the right occupational therapy and sensory input can totally transform their lives so it would be worth every penny.

VirtuallyThere · 10/08/2013 23:05

I would save half and spend half. Of the pot I'd spend I'd have a iMac computer to replace my chugging PC, a trip to Lapland to see Santa and put the rest towards a family holiday in San Francisco. I'd also give 100 - 200 pounds to a small voluntary group where it could make a difference/buy them something needed.

TequilaMockinBird · 10/08/2013 23:09

I'd pay £16k off my mortgage and use the other £4k for a lovely holiday Smile

janx · 11/08/2013 08:16

Deposit for a house so that ds and dd can finally have a bedroom of their own Grin

confusedofengland · 11/08/2013 12:43

I think I would split the money into a few different pots - one for house purchase/maintenance, one for credit card repayment, one for my DCS' future, one for a newer car & one for a holiday!
