Tell The National Lottery what you’d do with a fantasy £20,000 - £250 voucher prize draw! NOW CLOSED

You may have heard recently that The National Lottery's Lotto game is changing this autumn and is introducing a new Raffle where 50 players will win £20,000 in each draw. To celebrate this, The National Lottery have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters would do with (a fantasy) £20,000.

Here's what The National Lottery say: "As of 5th October, Lotto is changing, offering more ways to win more money. The prize for matching three numbers will be increased from £10 to £25, the jackpots will be bigger (£2.5million on Wednesday and £5million on Saturdays) and there's a new raffle where 50 players will win a guaranteed £20,000 each draw. Tickets for the new game go on sale on 3rd October and cost £2 per line. We would love to hear about how Mumsnetters would spend £20,000 if they were to win the raffle prize!"

So what would you do if you were to win £20,000? Would you go on a huge spending spree, or would you be more careful with your winnings and put it aside for a rainy day?

What have you always wanted to do, but have never managed to justify the cost of? Dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant? Buy a piece of designer jewellery? Maybe you'd splash it all on a round the world holiday? Or perhaps you'd save it to make life easier for you and your DCs if they decide to go to university? Or would you take the opportunity to clear (some) debts or pay off a chunk of the mortgage?

Whatever it is, The National Lottery would love to hear about it.

Everyone who shares their thoughts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Hmmm, I'd put an extra 20k towards upgrading us to a bigger house in preparation for Baby 2. DH, however, would probably rather blow the lot on a jet ski :)

Nerfmother · 12/08/2013 19:37

I'd pay for us to go to see my sister and nephews and bil in the Caribbean. Haven't seen her in years as its too expensive and even flights are beyond is for six people Grin

minimumeffort · 12/08/2013 20:16

I would use it to buy a car so I wasn't always sharing one with dh!

timidviper · 12/08/2013 20:23

Well we have just been told that our house needs a new roof, it is over 100 years old so has not done too badly. The first quote we have had is £16k so I would have that done then split anything left over into 5 equal parts for DH, me, DS, DD and charity or a good cause. Just thinking about it makes me happy! :)

zimbamummy · 12/08/2013 20:36

I'd create a 'Fun Fund' to do loads of fun things with my two small DS which would hopefully last a while so things like going to the seaside, sailing when they're a bit older, sporting events, music festivals, art classes, nice restaurants; basically given them as many different experiences as possible.

zimbamummy · 12/08/2013 20:39

Giving!

Whirliwig72 · 12/08/2013 20:51

I'd unleash some of my pinterest decorating ideas including a bright and beautiful playroom for my boys and a luxurious and tranquil master bedroom from which all children, toys, and general daily detritus would be banned! :) Failing that I'd buy a bright yellow Aga!

deepbreath · 12/08/2013 20:51

I'd get a basic new bathroom fitted plus a couple of new floorboards... new kitchen ceiling (current one looks like a hammock due to state of aforementioned old bathroom!) Maybe a new back door. I'd also hopefully have enough left to buy dd a trike as she is disabled and something nice for ds too. Poor dh will have to make do with admiring the new bathroom like me!

bessie26 · 12/08/2013 20:57

I'd put it towards an extension - another bedroom & a playroom/den for the kids. Dull, but I would love to be able to clear my dining room of toys and actually use it to eat in again!

Manchesterhistorygirl · 12/08/2013 21:13

Put half in the mortgage and half on a new kitchen from ikea. I miss my ikea kitchen in my old house. Hmm

Cheekybubbles · 12/08/2013 21:24

Would love to pay off all our debts and be able to take my family over to Australia to see my brother. He's only seen DD (10 months) when she was just born and if we could surprise him with a visit it would be amazing!

CormoranStrike · 12/08/2013 21:50

I would extend my kitchen, and make it into a family room, as right now it is the smallest room in our home and impossible to socialise or celebrate family in.

wibblyjelly · 12/08/2013 22:03

Deposit for a house, with maybe a bit aside for a holiday Grin

canuck43 · 12/08/2013 22:06

A trip to see son and family in America, long time since we saw them, its a long story.

TheBakeryQueen · 12/08/2013 22:10

I would (boringly) save it, towards a deposit for a much needed 4 bedroomed house.

Lioninthesun · 12/08/2013 22:36

I'd buy a new boiler before winter so we have heating. Then I would spend some on driving lessons for me, taking the theory and practical exams and a new car. I'd also love a new pair of Converse Grin and DD would love a wendy house for the garden.

Alohomora · 12/08/2013 23:05

We have been looking for the perfect house for a while now - we're renting privately at the moment and it is a lovely old house with high ceilings and lots and lots of damp. Last winter was basically one big long fight against mould and when we move we'll probably have to bin half our furniture because we'll never get rid of the smell.

So, yes, £20,000 would be the deposit on a lovely house for us, our dog, two cats and - hopefully in the next year - a dc.

VestaCurry · 13/08/2013 02:00

Both my young boys want to go to Lake Garda (we have never visited, so we think they may have seen something on tv or read about it). I'd love to take them there and to Rome, Naples and Pompeii. So that would be an expensive but brilliant holiday.

I'd also like to hire a big cottage over the Christmas break so me, my sis and my brother, plus all our kids could get together and enjoy the festive season in style.

Do some home improvements, our kitchen needs updating.

Then put £2K into ISA's for boys.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 13/08/2013 06:28

Have a second baby and take a full year of maternity leave! Would also pay off a lingering credit card and loan. I often dream about this!

Schumann · 13/08/2013 06:50

We'd use it to help us move. Currently pregnant with twins (DC 3&4) so current house no longer big enough!

Chocoflakes · 13/08/2013 07:59

I would like to put half towards debts(I know it should be all of it!)
Then half of that towards saving for a deposit for a house.
The remaining 5, 000 treating the children to new clothes and a break away for my husband and me.

Kjeram · 13/08/2013 08:32

I would take another year off work and extend my maternity leave!

MrsBartlet · 13/08/2013 08:36

I would use it for dd for university. She is starting sixth form this year and how we are going to pay fro university is very much on my mind!

Tallyra · 13/08/2013 09:36

I'd use it to build an extension on the house, increasing the toilets to two - 1 is definitely not enough in our house!!!

prakattack · 13/08/2013 09:50

I think I'd have to balance my sensible side and my "what-the-hell" side. I'd put half against the mortgage to hopefully make moving to a bigger house a more realistic possibility and then splash the rest on an amazing holiday and some smaller clothes shopping sprees for us all - buy something that's not in the Tesco or Matalan sale for a change!
