DS has his meeting with someone from his uni disability support service tomorrow. He has ASD/ADHD and had an ehcp throughout school.

I am going to be there to support him. It's online.

Can anyone give me a sense of what to expect?

We're not at this stage yet but dc2 had an online talk about this through an acess programme.

The things we both took away from it were

  1. You need evidence of disability where possible (plus proof of adjustments that dc have had through school).
  2. The most informative bit of the talk were 3 students talking about there experiences the thing that cropped up in all there talks were ask for anything and everything you may need and be honest from the start.
So one student had a disability that caused fatigue so there were things in place that when it was bad she sent one email and then everybody was notified rather than her having to let multiple people know. A woman with adhd had it written in that all lectures were audio recorded for playback and a man with selective mutism and asd had it in that presentations would be one on one or pre recorded. One woman didn't tell anybody about her struggles until the end of the first year when she nearly failed, things were put in place (and she said often she didn't use them but the reassurance of them being in place meant that she had a safety net) she said she's now heading for a first. One said that deadlines were an issue so had a mentor that checked in and supported, another said they could get an extension just by sending an email but just knowing that was in place was enough to reassure them if they ended up bed bound for a few days they'd got something in place. So what we took from this was be honest and open about what has and hasn't worked in life so far and let them know any worries and then they can suggest appropriate options. Best of luck.

Thank you! We had the meeting this morning and it was really good. So different from trying to get support at school. They were very skilful and experienced and suggested all sorts of things
