School transport for 16yo

basically I just don’t understand how children have to stay in education until they are18, but transport stops at 16. We live rurally (nearest bus stop is a 40min walk & it’d be 2 buses over at least an an hour or two to get to school), and academically bright 16yo wants to do a levels at his school. It has a resource base (which also stops at 16!) and I think he’ll cope, but no clue how one eart I get him there. He currently has a taxi, along with 5 other children. It’s a 20min drive.

there is a slightly nearer school, but it’d be completely unsuitable.

any ideas? I really don’t want to have to give up work to drive him, but I don’t think we can afford a taxi.

While the rules around transport are different for sixth form age DC compared to CSA pupils, the LA still has to have a transport policy that is lawful (many are not so check carefully). Although you may have to make a contribution to the cost. And the LA still has a duty to ensure the SEP in F of the EHCP is provided and if DC cannot attend school without transport you can challenge the refusal to provide transport on that basis.

thanks for the info.
bloody hell, it’s always so bloody hard, isn’t it? I can see a legal battle brewing and tbh I don’t have the capacity to fight. It’s so so draining, isn’t it?

off to check the section F.
