Y11 DC – school SEN record or rather lack of 🤯

DC is ADHD & ASD and now in Y11. No EHCP as they ‘manage’ well, but is really struggling with revision because the standard school-taught methods just aren’t working. I’ve been asking the SENCO and Head of KS4 for support since the start of Y10. The last response I had from the SENCO was defensive, the kicker being that ‘they have 150 other SEN students to manage’, which really wound me up. Out of frustration, I made a GDPR request to see all SEN documentation (I was v.specific asking for internal emails, meeting notes, provision maps, support plans/pupil passports, intervention records. documents stored on systems such as Edukey, or SIMS) to have written evidence about what they actually know and provide for DC. The info arrived today and they don’t even have the ADHD diagnosis on their register. There is also no information pre-Y10. I feel like I’m being placated rather than supported.
I’m going to follow up because DC is clearly being let down through a lack of reasonable adjustments. Any advice or experience would be hugely appreciated.

We had this. DD crashed out of school at start of Y11 due to MH crisis and I started asking questions, she apparently had 'reasonable adjustments' but nothing was written down, it was mind-blowing. I applied for an EHCNA myself as school wouldn't and she now has an EHCP. Took a year though.

I’m sorry to hear your experience, hope your DD is doing better. I thought the file maybe thin, but nothing like this. I’ve replied to school asking for amendments to DC record, let’s just say it appears to have put the cat amongst the pigeons, and suddenly I’ve got a meeting with all relevant staff for an urgent review. Once I’ve got the records straight I’ll be applying for a EHCNA.

She is doing a lot better this year thanks. We paid for her to have private tuition for maths and English at home, as the LA was dragging it's feet to provide anything and she passed those GCSEs in the summer. Best of all, this year she's in a small setting (hospital education) to do a few more subjects, and she's enjoying being in a classroom again.

Keep the pressure on with school, and good luck with the EHCNA. Lots of useful info online (and on here) from those who have already been through it.
