My son is 13, at school he was well always well behaved, top of class but since starting secondary is really struggling mainly due to his lack of focus, organisation and impulse control with friends (all boys school) . He is starting to go down in sets because he is just not focusing and I am thinking perhaps some kind of magnesium etc may help and also looking for straterrgies to help him cope in class as currently any atoms he does such as leg tapping etc he gets in trouble for. He is also diabetic which hasn’t been as controlled since he has started having to do more himself which I think is also feeding into the lack of concentration and we are working on this as a separate issue.

He isn’t officially diagnosed however I have always suspected and when mentioning to teachers they have said he had some traits but because he was always focused and enjoyed primary/ not causing an issue we didn’t take it further (he is extremely clever) however since secondary he has just spiralled and it’s getting to make or break point now. I am going to seek a diagnosis for him but i think by the time he gets it it will probably be too late.

I know I should have done this earlier and it’s always easy to look back and say what you should have done in hindsight (a lot of things differently) but at the time I didn’t think a diagnosis would make a difference.

You need to get him diagnosed/assessed as a first step. Large class sizes and school noise in secondary can be awful for them with lots of distractions. Medication really helped DD16, just on school days. It was massive relief for her to understand her diagnosis.

Getting assessed and taking the medication helped massively.

In school, lots of exercise, daily meditation and body doubling for homework
