Setting up finances for disabled adult for after parents' deaths

Asking on behalf of a friend. They have a family member who is a young adult with severe anxiety and autism. She lives independently with carers going in, and receives benefits. They want to make financial plans for her future after her parents' deaths - she is unlikely to be able to cope with bank accounts and financial admin. They expect to leave money to her. There are no other family members or close friends who could manage a trust for her; she will be on her own after her parents die. This must be a problem a lot of families deal with - where can they get advice? Are there specialist financial advisors? Are there any books or other resources which could help? Thank you.

I would advise your friend to speak to a solicitor with experience of Trusts. There are people who can run Trusts. For example, Mencap has a Trust business side. Although there are fees, of course. This is important because if they leave money directly to DD, it will be taken into account for means tested benefits and financial assessments for social care support.

For benefits, if their DD can’t manage the claims herself and there isn’t anyone else to act as appointee, there are corporate appointees. Again, there is usually a charge for this

Thank you very much - a Mencap Trust looks ideal. Have passed the information on. Would still be interested in other resources.
