Supported living

Hello.
my DS is 22 with autism and learning difficulties. He can also be aggressive to us. Both my husband and I are not in the best of health. I think we should look into supported living sooner rather than later. My DH thinks he should live wt home with us. I don’t think this is good for anyone of us long term. His aggression makes me stressed and on edge. And our house would not be suitable for him after our days.
he is just finishing up a supported internship but no work looks likely to come of it. He does get some PIp at the moment. He also has £20k from a child trust fond we set up
I just don’t know where to start with finding him accommodation. We couldn’t afford to pay for it all.

would I start by going to the council? I have seen some private places but I don’t know how they are funded.

thanks for any suggestions on where to start

Yes, contact social services. DS needs an assessment of his needs and you need carer’s assessment.

If social care provide support, DS would be subject to a financial assessment and would initially be expected to contribute to his care from his capital.

You could also investigate whether DS is eligible for CHC funding. This isn’t means tested.

Is DS, or his appointee, receiving UC?

Sorry, of course DS won’t be receiving UC if he has £20k, but he, or his appointee will be able to once savings fall below £16k.

Thanks
yes he gets pip but has too much in savings to apply for UC.

I just wondered how they would decide that he’s eligible for supported living as it would cost them money. I’m sure they would rather we kept him at home but I don’t think that’s n his interest long term

Sadly, yes, you will need to push. Start with asking for social care assessments.

We are in the process of waiting for a placement for our son who is 25, with severe learning difficulties, autistic and is also non verbal.
Unfortunately for us it is a very slow process and hardly any communication on how things are moving, other than being told they don’t have any placements available for supported living and it could take at least 2 years for one to become available.
Very frustrating, as he will pushing 30 before one become’s available and that’s assuming he settles there ok and not have to find something else.
