HI my daughter (Year 7, 12 years old) is missing more and more school. Now has an ASD diagnosis. Very poor mental health. She's very bright, has made lovely friends at school and really wants to learn. We have been successful in being assessed for an EHC plan. If she gains an EHCP I'm not quite sure of next steps. She says the school is too big and overwhelming for her. Should we ask for a smaller school (but whole it's not got so many pupils the corridors etc will be equally busy as the school is smaller physically too), try for funding for a private school which would be much smaller but surely unlikely to get this funding, look at special needs schools, again unlikely to get and would limit her subject choices, number of GCSEs etc or stay at current school which she doesn't like...but she's got so many friends there. I'm so confused! The main thing is she really wants to learn but when she misses school or lessons her current school will not send her lessons home or let her access them from another room as they say they don't want to "normalise" the absences (this came out of the headteachers mouth 🤦‍♀️)

Look at all the options. Independent schools can be funded via the EHCP. SS can be funded and doesn’t necessarily mean limiting academics - it depends on the school. Yes, you might have to appeal, but it is possible.

Make sure you request all the necessary advice and information, including OT and SALT, is sought during the EHCNA.

The school doesn’t have to send work home. It is the LA with responsibility for ensuring DC unable to attend school full time still receive a suitable full-time education.
