Hi,
wondering if anybody has experience of having autism diagnosis and then being referred for ADHD assessment? My daughter had ASD diagnosis at 14 after a period of anxiety, school refusal and rapid weight loss. She is an over thinker with a lot of anxiety and prone to low moods. She’s been on fluoxetine and then Sertraline since 14. Had CAMHS councillor till 18 and CBT. She’s now 20. Her anxiety has always been a major disabler and despite having some better times it’s always been a major issue stopping her from doing the things she wants to do (ie drive, go to university - she’s highly intelligent). Even with accommodations she can’t overcome anxieties and it’s ruining her life and stopping her living. She is never relaxed, has to always walk, go gym etc, can’t just sit and watch tv, doesn’t sleep well…her brain never switches off she says. Now she’s been referred for adhd assessment but I’ve read adhd meds (if she’s diagnosed) aren’t suitable for autistic people. Anybody got experience with this dual diagnosis and specifically what might have helped with anxiety? Thank you

I was diagnosed with autism, then ADHD. DS2 was diagnosed the other way round.

Some autistic people find ADHD medication works. Some find they have to try several types to find the right one. It isn’t a blanket medication is never helpful for autistic people.
