Hello everyone reading this, my DS (wheelchair user / AMC dx) is off to do his degree in Manchester and I am struggling to find affordable accessible accommodation. Does anyone have any experience of DSA helping with the cost please? It’s privately rented student accommodation ( not uni run as he is going to a BIMM creative institution). Thanks for reading.

Is the accommodation completely private or run by a company (e.g. Unite) on behalf of the university (even if it isn’t university owned/controlled accommodation)? Sorry no idea about BIMM creative institutions.

DSA can cover additional disability related accommodation costs for the former, where there is evidence it is required for disability related reasons. For the latter, the higher education provider is expected to not pass on the additional costs/cover the additional costs as part of reasonable adjustments just like they are if it is university owned accommodation.

Yes, thanks for your time. I have that info, hoped I’d made that clear in my initial post. My appeal is to anyone who has direct experience of meeting the criteria and availing themselves of the additional support. Thanks though.

I do have personal experience, but it was utterly pointless replying further before clarifying whether it was truly private accommodation or private accommodation run by a private company on behalf of the university. You only mentioned it wasn’t university run accommodation. You didn’t mention that it wasn’t private rented accommodation run by a private company on behalf of the university.

@StrivingForSleepthanks for your reply. I am only asking for people who care to share their experience. I have no wish to bother anyone who finds my request frustrating in any way or to be schooled by anyone. Please feel free to scroll on if I am not meeting your standards. I am tired, I have a tremendous amount of stress in my life currently and I am reaching out for help. I do not have the energy to keep thanking people for unhelpful contributions. Thanks for your time.

I was trying to help. I was trying to ascertain more information before responding fully. As I said, it would be pointless (and not helpful) to share more without first clarifying. I am sorry you think that was unhelpful. It is bizarre you have taken offence at someone clarifying your post.

@StrivingForSleepI’m not taking offence. I’ve thanked you for your contribution. I’ve tried to be clear. We obviously just don’t get each other’s communication style. Let’s just leave it at that.
