How to start the conversation about assessment?

DS is just turned 18. Always been ‘quirky’ but in the last 12-18 months (since 6th form really) his quirks are looking more and more like possible traits of ASD. He is lovely but very awkward and definitely lacking social skills. I am worried about what his life will be like after 6th form (he wants to work rather than go to uni, but no idea what he wants to do, no enthusiasm for anything in particular!) and whether a diagnosis might help him and potential employers.

But… I don’t really know how to start the conversation without making it sound like I think there’s something wrong with him? Which I don’t- he is who he is and I wouldn’t expect him to change- but I know the world isn’t going to change for him! Am also mindful of pressures of exams this summer which it’s already a battle to get him motivated about.

anyone been in this position with an older teen/young adult and have some tips? Would you leave it until after exams? Or tips for even just starting the topic??
