Hello wondering whether anyone has experience of gaining an EHCP for an 18 year old. My son got a good set of GCSEs but only completed 12 months of sixth form - he was diagnosed with ADHD in sixth form and is currently on a tritiation period with medication which has had a positive effect; he has had work experience and as the medication has gone well he now wants to return to education to give it another go and hopefully obtain a level 3 qualification or further. One qualification he is looking at is a T Level, which due to government guidelines is only open to 16 - 18 year olds as luck would have it my son turns 19 in August just before the start of term. However those with an EHCP can still apply - this is not something he had whilst in education although in hindsight, he probably should have had more support, he struggled and I believe got through his exams as he is a sharp boy and with a bit of luck! I am wondering whether anyone has had experience of gaining an EHCP for an 18 year with ADHD and any advice that can be offered would be appreciated. Thank you.

It is possible to get an EHCP at 18. I have supported others to get EHCPs at that age and older. However, it may take one or more appeals.

DS, or someone on his behalf, would need to request an EHCNA. IPSEA has a model letter that can be used. The legal test to first focus on is that for the EHCNA. It is relatively low - a) has or may have SEN, and b) may need special educational provision to be made via an EHCP.
