A level retakes with Audhd

My Y13 is not doing enough work to pass A levels but wants to go to Uni. Does anyone know where an 18 year old can retake A levels (year 14) plus get real asd/adhd support? Mainstream school is NOT working!! We can move but London/west best. Thanks for any suggestions

Does DC have an EHCP? What is available will depend on that.

What do they want to do at University? An access course might work better?

mumsthewurd · 14/01/2025 23:44

my daughter is doing gcse retakes through home Ed/distance learning courses. Depending on his a levels there may be similar courses available? Have been waiting for SEND help through her EHCP but our local authority are playing silly games and have only offered stupid courses and no real education so we’re paying ourselves. But i don’t feel there’s any real alternative if she’s going to get the qualifications she wants and needs and it’s really working for her.

Hi thanks for asking - yes he’s had one since age 7. Should I ask for something specific to go on it? Transition review coming up and I’d like to make use of it

Chemistry or biochemistry. Great idea - but it looks like Access courses are only available post 19 and will be 18 til next January

If DS will be moving placement in September, the EHCP needs to be finalised at least 5 months in advance, so the phase transfer review meeting should have been held by now.

The EHCP can remain in force until 25, or 26 if necessary (although doesn’t cover university) and provision not typically available to other students can be available for EHCP students.

Do you think a mainstream independent tutorial college would work?

Would online schooling work for DS? Alongside other provision for his ASD/ADHD. If online wouldn’t work, what about in person tuition?

Wemms is a special school has a mixed reputation. Parents either love it or hate it, but it offers some A levels and sometimes allows DC to attend until 20. That may be within travelling distance of where you are.

It is a SEMH provision, but not your typical SEMH provision, so depending on DS’s needs, you could look at West Heath. They offer A levels in conjunction with colleges. Most of their DC attend their sixth form before Y14, but they may still offer a place until 20.

Be aware if you move LAs, the new LA will review the LA and potentially amend, reassess or propose to cease to maintain. You will be able to appeal, but it is something you need to be aware of, especially post 16.

There’s flexibility with this for students with an EHCP

Distance learning centre will offer access courses to under 18s. It’s not free but it’s really not that expensive - my ds has nearly completed one he started at 17 a year ago and has offers from all the universities he applied to.

edited to add - I neglected you mentioned audhd support. My ds is diagnosed with asd and I suspect adhd as well. I just don’t believe support exists in any of these environments. He did the course at home on his own, he had a tutor he could speak to, and he was able to develop some employment experience and skills around it so he was not sociallolated.

QuestionsAndAnswers123 · 28/01/2025 23:40

I take it he doesn’t want to retake at his current school?
if he doesn’t mind, you can actually retake 1 year there.

SailingWithNineLives · 31/01/2025 17:23

My DD is retaking one of her A-Levels at school this year. She has ASD and was overwhelmed (and unsupported) at school. She is just sitting the exam there and we're using a tutor to support her learning.

NellyBarney · 12/02/2025 20:39

Is there a possibility they could, maybe with some tutoring, scrape a D and an E? Then they could do a Bsc with Foundation Year at several unis.

bibab · 15/02/2025 18:16

I’m really hoping that turns out to be the case. So frustrating as there’s time to make that happen but he just isn’t working. And would he even work next year?! Does anyone have a similar DD or DS who realised and started working??

My dd v bright adhd , great gcse results but dropped out of 6th form and at nearly 19 now massively regretting her lack of A levels as she has just been doing jobs with little future. She is now looking at access courses. So he will realise he has to start working on exams but it may not be for a couple of years which does make it tricky.

Has your DC applied for uni?
