DLA to PIP

Aria20 · 25/11/2024 16:57

My child has turned 16 and we now have to reapply for PIP instead of DLA. We are both anxious about what this is going to involve. Can anyone offer advice/experience with what to expect? What do they ask and what do they need from us?
Thanks

The form asks questions about the activities that are scored. You can see those activities and the points awarded here.

You need 8 points from the 10 daily living activities for the standard rate of the daily living component of PIP, and 12 points from the 10 daily living activities for the enhanced rate of the daily living component of PIP. Similarly, you need 8 points and 12 points on the 2 mobility activities for standard and enhanced rate of the mobility component, respectively.

In order to be able to be classed as able to do something, you have to be able to do the task reliably. That is safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly and in a timely manner.

The benefits and work site is helpful. The best free guide I know of is this one.

Send any relevant evidence you have.

Some claims are assessed on the papers. Some have a virtual or phone assessment. A minority have a face to face assessment.

Are you DS’s appointee?

Aria20 · 25/11/2024 19:45

Thank you that is really helpful I will look at those links tonight. Yes I'm his appointee. The letter telling me to move from dla to pip just gives me a number to call with DS present but I couldn't get through in time today as they only open 9-5 and he doesn't get home from school until 4.45 so it's going to be difficult! It doesn't say anything about the form itself yet just to ring the number - I assume I'll have to do the form as well at some point though?! Such a stressful experience on top of dealing with his school constantly every day and chasing hospital appointments etc!

Because you are appointee, you don’t need DS to be present to call to begin the claim. You can speak on DS’s behalf even if some DWP employees tell you otherwise. The initial phone call is just to initiate the claim. They will ask some basic information. You will then be sent a form to complete.

Aria20 · 25/11/2024 21:42

@BrightYellowTrain thank you I will try calling them tomo day time then as the letter said he had to be there but might as well try without him or we'll struggle to ever get through before they shut!

If they ask to speak to DS, say you are appointee and DS can’t manage the claim so they can speak to you. Sometimes you have to be quite persistent.

Aria20 · 28/11/2024 18:58

@BrightYellowTrain thank you for your help. I managed to get through today without DS present and they are now sending the form out and will continue to pay dla while they wait for me to return the form and make decision.

Hi if you are the appointee do they speak to you or DD when do the phone assessment

Aria20 · 20/01/2025 16:17

I am still waiting to hear back from them. I sent the forms back in December and I had a text acknowledging receipt but nothing else yet. I'm hoping I sent enough evidence not to have to go through an assessment which I understand even as the appointee DS would need to be present and participate in.

@Aria20 hi I phoned them and said DD wasn’t able to do the face to face they have now arranged phone assessment the appointee can speak on there behalf

Caitlyn59 · 20/01/2025 18:00

@Aria20 I sent forms in November quite bit evidence but said still needs assessment I don’t know how they work it but most are saying they didn’t need one , but got the text today

BrightYellowTrain · 20/01/2025 18:38

@Caitlyn59 sometimes you have to be quite persistent but as appointee you can speak. Most people at the moment are not having paper based assessments.

Caitlyn59 · 20/01/2025 18:45

@BrightYellowTrain
Hi , do they have to speak to DD or appointee speaks for them as DD is struggling and just won’t talk to anyone about how or what she feels .

BrightYellowTrain · 20/01/2025 18:47

@Caitlyn59 as I said, sometimes you have to be persistent but as appointee you can speak.

Caitlyn59 · 20/01/2025 18:48

@BrightYellowTrain
thank you

Caitlyn59 · 20/01/2025 18:51

@BrightYellowTrain
hi
is pip less than DLA if successful

BrightYellowTrain · 20/01/2025 18:55

It depends on the rates awarded.

The high rate care component of DLA is the same rate as the enhanced care component of PIP.
The middle rate care component of DLA is the same rate as the standard care component of PIP.
There is no equivalent of the low rate care component of DLA.
The high rate mobility component of DLA is the same rate as the enhanced mobility component of PIP.
The low rate mobility component of DLA is the same rate as standard care component of PIP.

Caitlyn59 · 09/04/2025 18:23

Hi , when your DLA ends when you change to pip , do DLA send a letter about final payment, as don’t know if you get the month which is paid in arrears
