Private ADHD Assessment versus Right to Choose (NHS)

Hi, my young adult son thinks he has ADHD. He says he wants assessment but hasn't done anything to organise it (I suspect the inability to get it together to organise something he wants to do may even be an ADHD symptom). I have offered to help him if he wants me to. I learnt that in many parts of the UK you can request 'Right to Choose' which is where you can see a private provider but the NHS will pay. It would be a struggle to pay for a private assessment but I could probably find the money especially as my brother who has kids with SN would probably help out if I asked. I am wondering whether it would be better for my son, if he went for a private assessment. Would he be seen quicker than Right to Choose? He wants to try medication - if he is assessed privately will we have to pay for medication on an ongoing basis or can he transfer back into the NHS?
I have also heard that some clinics do an assessment online. I know my son would much prefer this - is an online assessment just as valid as an in person one?
Obviously my son will make his own decisions, I just want to be able to help him by giving him some information and options

Thanks!

If continuing to afford private prescriptions, DS should speak to his GP before going privately. Not all GPs will take on shared care.

Waiting times vary. It will depend on the specific providers you are comparing.

Online assessments can be valid, but it depends on the specifics of the assessment. If he goes private, DS should check any provider follows the NICE guidelines.

Thanks Bright, that's really helpful. I will pass on that info to DS
