Unpalatable epilepsy medication

My son has taken Epilim and Keppra for the last 13years in liquid form via syringe ( he wouldn’t manage tablets)
He has begun to refuse the Keppra and gags when given even slowly. It taste bitter and disgusting and I don’t know how he’s put up with it so long. But he has to have it as one missed dose can cause a seizure. He takes 15ml twice a day and I’m getting stressed. I can’t see mixing it with anything would mask the strong flavour (grape apparently!)
Any advice gratefully listened to 😊

Ribena may help to take the edge off the taste.

Alongside this, can you practice taking tablets? For example, starting with hundreds and thousands, then moving to tic-tacs, then jelly tots and then small pieces of jelly babies cut up. Ensuring DS places the e.g. hundred and thousand in the middle of his tongue rather than the back and doesn’t tip his head right back. Some people find using a sports water bottle you can seal lips around top or cups like this. A play therapist referral may help too.

@EndlessLight
thankyou for your reply sorry it’s been a while. Tablets never really crossed my mind but they would be the perfect solution. I’m just not sure if they’d be possible as my son is actually 24 now and we’ve never been give the tablet option as he does not have capacity. I may just have a chat with the epilepsy nurses. Thankyou.

Not having capacity shouldn’t make a difference to the form the medication takes.

If you can get DS to take tablets it will make it much easier.
