Probably autistic teen hitting school staff

DD13, has a medical condition and also being assessed for autism, after a previous ADHD diagnosis was recanted. We are in Scotland, attends the local mainstream secondary school.

Gets a lot of school support, the medical condition is neurological, she has a PSA with her most of the time. Gets very easily frustrated and this often leads to her being physical. It hit a peak towards end of S1, but thankfully with the school roll down with exam season, some accommodations to her timetable were made. S2 and back to normal but one of her triggering subjects has been replaced with additional sessions in the support hub. Today, refusal to move to a class led to her hitting her PSA, a senior member of teaching staff, and her father (when he arrived after being summoned to collect her.) She then hit me, over dinner, about 2 mins after apologising to her father at home.

not yet had a school meeting but fully expecting some sort of exclusion. There doesn’t seem to be an in between. Clearly mainstream isn’t working but she’s not severely disabled enough for the local ASN school. Not sure what I’m asking but really wish we could help her express frustration without violence, or else as she gets bigger it’s just going to lead to assault charges. Education wise, don’t know where we go next.

Have you spoken to Enquire. They have information on the correct process for exclusion. At the moment, it sounds like DD has been unlawfully informally excluded. You should contact the school on Monday about that. Govan Law Centre may be able to help too.

There are units without some mainstreams that may be an option and other ASN schools.

Thank you. I’ve not heard of Enquire so that looks very useful.
