Hi

Any advice on this ? My son is almost 18 , he’s autistic. He struggles with regulating his emotions and he is getting support for this with mentoring.

However , he hits his head when he is really stressed - not every day stress , but when it all bubbles up and leads to a meltdown . He hates that he does this and I see him trying to stop a meltdown and actually tries to stop showing his emotions . He’s doing well in managing them but he gets down about the fact he hits his head when it bubbles up - he’s so down on himself , he has massive Health anxiety and worries about giving himself a brain injury or causing memory loss ( these are his focuses at the moment and I can’t reason with him ) , when he does this he then has a few days where he is really down and convinced he’s insane and should be locked away and doesn’t deserve to be here , or to have friends etc ( I will add he’s certainly not suicidal) . But he has begged me to find a way to stop him hitting himself , he doesn’t want to do it but feels when he’s that angry or stressed it just happens .

Any advice or tools that anyone can recommend ?

I will add he doesn’t have memory loss - he will focus if he forgets to do something, he’s not having incidents of memory loss it’s all normal day to day things , he’s also convinced he’s caused hearing loss - again , he has no hearing issues but if I call him and then call him again as he hasn’t heard me the first time ( normal - he’s listening to music etc ) he will get worked up that he’s going deaf

I've got no idea how to stop him hitting or even how to stop him going into overwhelm. Just wanted to offer a handhold Flowers

Other than mentoring, what support is DS receiving? Any SALT, OT, MH therapies? Medication? Have you tried keeping a detailed diary to spot triggers to prevent the dysregulation in the first place?
