ADHD therapy - advice please

Just putting this post here as wrongly put it another category. We arranged a year's therapy (privately) for our ADHD-diagnosed dd, but it ended last year. We can't afford this anymore as we have sunk thousands into it (plus diagnosis and meds etc). Has anyone managed to secure therapy via the NHS, and if not, what have they done? DD is floundering, having left school before her A levels. We can't get her into education again (she won't go back) but she is also struggling to find work and says she needs therapy to keep her positive, engaged and organised around job hunts etc etc.

I’m sorry to read this about your dd. Would ADHD coaching be any cheaper than therapy for her?

Yes, coaching might also help and we are looking into it but the Gov doesn't seem to offer much help unless you actually have a job. I think (tbh) she needs counselling and coaching. The diagnosis came so late that she is struggling all round...

I completely understand the situation you’re facing. It is horrendous. Does your dd take ADHD medication? We found that’s a huge help but, of course, there’s the uphill battle to even obtain it from a pharmacy at the moment! Can ADHD UK help in any way, even if it’s just to point you in local charities or organisations that could help.

@Mydoghealsmyheart Thanks for your message. Our dd is on an Elvanse substitute - not sure she takes it every day though, as I know she is worried about it running out during current shortages. We do get it via our GP now. I think it's her emotional state that is more of a worry; the realisation that all her friends are now at uni and she is stuck with a bunch of GCSEs and too traumatised, it seems, to go back into education (her school didn't alert us to the possibility of ADHD until she was 17). We try and mention apprenticeships but get nowhere - and her ADHD-chaotic habits plus rollercoaster emotions are pulling her down (and with it, the whole family). I wonder if the meds need increasing? She is on 50mg. But not much chance of that perhaps with the shortage.

How old is DD?

Have you considered requesting an EHCNA? An EHCP can include therapies DC wouldn’t otherwise get on the NHS, without the need to sit on the normal waiting list and for longer/more frequently. An EHCP doesn’t have to include traditional education.

Is DD, or you as appointee, claiming UC?
